“Black-headed Grosbeak parents fly south with worn feathers after breeding season. Their molting locations had been a mystery. The California scientists solved it with relatively inexpensive Global Positioning System (GPS) receiving devices.
They attached the 1-gm electronic devices to a leg of each grosbeak. The devices wake up every 2-6 weeks, record the GPS position and switch off. The GPS device, leg harness and leg bands weigh less than 2 g, or the equivalent of a long-distance runner carrying a laptop in a backpack. When I saw this I wasn't sure what it was or what it represented as workers were finishing the installation. Since then I've learned that it represents data visualization it reflects the global impact of food production and consumption on the environment. Part of the "Around The Table" exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden. I still don't understand it but it's nice to look at.
Under the cover of night, Eurasian forces move through an industrial area of Pristina. The target: a LORO data centre believed to contain data drives taken in the arrest of multiple Eurasian ambassadors during a meeting in Copenhagen. While the Nordic oil fields had been of prior interest, the seized data contained developing information on large reserves hidden along the Northern coast of Libya.
This is an image of an around 50% illuminated phase of our closest planetary neighbour Venus.
I managed to get my planetary scope out back in June to image this beautiful object, shining brilliantly in our evening skies then. This represents the last time I have done any planetary imaging due to circumstances.
The data has been on my drive since and I'm only getting around to have a look at it now.
Venus is one of the so-called inferior planets, as it orbits the sun inside our orbit.
This means that Venus orbits the sun faster than earth and from our perspective is sometimes closer to us and at other times is on the far side of the sun. This change in relative position means we see phases for Venus (and Mercury).
Unfortunately when it approaches earth and is at its largest apparent size its phase also decreases!
This is a false coloured UV/IR filter image to reveal some cloud structure in the thick atmosphere of Venus. Data from the IR filter is mapped to the red channel and that from the UV is mapped to blue. A synthetic green channel is produced from a blend of both. Some lovely cloud structure is apparent.

My entry into Ron's What If...? contest. I decided to reimagine Kopaka as a sort of cybertech knight dude in a Tron-esque data scape. Originally this was going to be a very different character design, but I ended up splitting it into this and another MOC I'll be sharing in October since the two concepts didn't really merge well.

Yay for random titles xDD I took this a few weeks ago (notice the exif data XD) BUT I am cleaning out my files & found it! Not sure how I feel about it, but I like it! It's different. I might delete later...not sure. This was inspired by Lanietriplets. I spend probably an hour and a half just taking long exposure photos ha! Have a wonderful day!

two weeks ago I was confronted with my data in a hard way. My large storage device “Drobo” refused to operate after I upgraded it with another 2TB drive. The drive became unresponsive and after a while it did came back giving me the opportunity to retrieve some data…since this was my largest storage device I had to make sacrifices to the data I could retrieve, so I had to delete all my movies, series and software I had collected over the years. Luckily I did manage to backup my photography work.
That same week my laptop died and it has been sent back to Apple for repairs.
Fortunatly I do hold regular backup sessions, but it’s still a hassle and I’m once again aware that all data is fleeting, and no storage medium is safe from harm. Photo’s can burn, disk drives will fail…it’s time holographic data crystals are made…at least they seem stable enough….

While I enjoy Flickr too much to leave, I thought it made a good opportunity to sort through old works and decide on discards - that which I've done to get below 1,000.
Right now I've decided to open a second "archival" account and slowly transfer older works in a process. There's no reason to follow that account though it's appreciated, and will keep anyone wanting to continue seeing my work from having to do anything at all. It will still come through as normal.
Thanks for the support over the years, and I hope we can all continue doing this and share in some way!

This garage still exists and looks more or less identical to how it appears here except for the loss of pumps and pole sign. Here the Arndale branding has gone as, along with the Little David brand, it would be phased out as all sites were unified under the new Butler branding featuring far more red than before. The two recovery vehicles dominate the view but we can see the same pumps still sit on the forecourt. The only indication left that Butler petrol was ever sold here are the canopy supports which are red at the bottom and white for the remainder.
