Gothic music never really went public ever but the sounds and forebearers had to establish its existence. The Doors though a psychedelic and partly classic rock band started to have its own sound, david bowie was another inspirer who helped birth gothic rock. Out of the womb of alternative rock and molded by horror punk came gothic rock. The genre was experimented by certain artists such as The Damned, The Killing Joke and The Misfits. What started with Bauhaus was continued by Sisters of Mercy, Sex Gang Children, Christian Death, Specimen, Alien Sex Fiend, Alien Vampires and others. By the metal scene, gothic rock shifted to a more hardcore and more atmospheric and nostalgic direction, headed by bands such as Southern Death Cult (now The Cult), Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Dead Can Dance and many other unnamed bands. As it seems either a popular act, commercial or movie brings forth a scene, gothic music met the public billboard of popular music by 1995 after the famous movie The Crow made massive cinematic success. The Cure and Siouxsie Sioux were given spots in the top 10, joining them were some other gothic rock bands though few wanted such attention, The Cult agreed to joining the major leagues of music. Rasputina, Depeche Mode, Theatre of Tragedy and Deadsy joined in the emerging public goth scene. Like Punk and Metal they also met a scandal of hipsters causing a line between Mall-Goths and Psuedo-Goths to exist. Pseudo-Goths who at the time were seen as mall-types started catering to more industrial metal bands such as Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails and Rammstein allowing the mainstream media to tag them as gothic bands. It didn't stop as Slipknot and HIM came for the media to further their point (later math). Original goths, Old school goths and even Mall-Goths began to move more towards the metal direction. Gothic Metal spawned what was considered the third generation of goths since the mall-goths emerged in the gothic scene of the late 90's. For metal goths their major name bands where Draconian, My Dying Bride, Type O Negative, Moonspell, The 69 Eyes and Anathema while for Mall-Goths (existing term after turn of the millennium) their bands under the Pop-Goth tag are Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish and the famous Evanescence. The scene ended rather infamously due to societies philosophy of 'guilty by association' as the Columbine Shootings happened though it wasn't the first of public school shoot outs it sure made the most noise. Goths were forced to defend their lifestyle afterwards and began setting rules and standards for becoming gothic forcing psuedo-goths out and leaving mall-goths as 'quasi-gothic' but not fully gothic. Psuedo-goths were responsible for many of the crazy stereotypes such as the 'Satanic Worship', 'Hate Everyone', 'Want To Kill Everyone', 'Always Depressed' and the lately 'Suicidal To The Core' which came with the emo scene. However Harris and Klebold who were the culprits of the Columbine massacre were Industrial kids, since some Rivetheads are about 'natural selection' (a Darwin philosophy) and about theatrically displaying oppression and tyranny towards any political leader they hate (especially George W. Bush). After all the mess and clean up, the media try to overthrow its prejudice image by creating commercials of Swiffer and Laptops with goth kids in them. The newly emerged poser trend called 'preppy-goth' started with the Twilight phenomenon where heartagrams and 'TEAM EDWARD' or other related mainstream material directed new light on the hipsters (becoming the very opposite of the nature of their lifestyle) where wearing black clothes from preppy stores and listening to so-called gothic bands such as HIM, My Chemical Romance and Fiona Apple is considered the 'thing'. [Sidenote: Hopefully this trend will fade like the others before it]. Continuosly the media had goth kids in everything from sitcoms, to reality shows, to movies and all other forms of media. Goths are the most accepting, open-minded (free thinking) and less strict of them all as well as the most appealing to be! The newest movements of the gothic lifestyle include Cyber goths who lean into the electronica direction and the new public and underground lifestyle called the Perky Goth who is into the cheesy gothic music such as Gothic Funk, Gothic Rap and Deathrock or Darkwave.
