A distinctive dragonfly with dark spots on the wings. Can be found over much Britain and Ireland and be seen on the wing from late spring and summer. This species of dragonfly can wander widely and will often turn up as a migrant on the south coast. Preferred habitat is standing or slow moving waters especially acidic heathland pools.

'FADING GLORY.'

The fading glory of a Green-winged Orchid that would have once looked splendid. I particularly liked the bold markings on each flower's lower petal. I thought the blotches showed nicely against the pale mauve centres ... more subtle than on white, imo.

There was a poor showing of Green-winged Orchids in Cribb's Meadow this Spring, very different to when I visited in 2018. The ground was parched and cracked as a result of the drought and the majority of plants were burnt to a crisp.

By searching thoroughly I managed to find a few late flowerers, so all was not lost. The delicately coloured flowers on this plant attracted my attention, very pretty indeed.

My first sighting of a pink Green-winged Orchid.

Stunted due to the exceptionally dry Spring of 2020, but in absolutely prime condition. One of just 2 pink colour variants on site, the majority being purple.

'ALMOST ... '

A tiny three-flowered Green-winged Orchid spike, just beautiful.

It was almost a pure white specimen except for the splashes of purple on just one flower. I caught it in it's prime, struggling on against the odds in the parched, rock hard soil of a traditional meadow.

I have been trying to get some information on the Giant White butterfly and I feel sure that the butterfly in the photograph is female. You will mostly find the eggs and caterpillars of the Giant White butterfly are in clusters, they usually lay between 30 and 100 on the underside of leaves. The caterpillars are normally clustered together until near maturity when they separate out and move to other parts of the plant or on to other plants. The young caterpillars are small and yellowish with shiny black heads, as the caterpillars grow they start showing dark spots on their body, when they get older you again find changes taking place and they become speckled black and greyish green with three yellow lines along their bodies and lots of pale hairs. When they are fully grown they are approximately 50mm long.

'PRETTY IN PINK'

Last year I found my first pink Green-winged Orchids - just two, growing close together in a parched, traditional meadow. They were exquisite and the spike this flower grew on was in peak condition.

Although both plants were stunted due to the extremely dry Spring we had experienced, lack of height did not detract from their beauty. I used selective focus to concentrate on just one flower for this image ... looking very pretty in pink!

What do you think?

P.S.: There is a sunspot visible.

wish you a nice, warm and cosy weekend!

Green-winged Orchid / anacamptis morio. Cribbs Meadow, Leicestershire. 18/05/20.

An image made almost a year ago, when it was a real struggle to find any orchids worth photographing in Cribb's Meadow. Due to a dry Spring and high temperatures, most of the plants were burnt to a crisp and all of them were stunted.

Thankfully, the visit was saved when I discovered two pale pink Green-winged Orchids growing close together. I'd never seen a pink variety before and although this one had peaked it's prime, they were truly delicate beauties.

With warm springlike sunshine and temperatures in the 60's (Fahrenheit) for several days, the first brood of Celastrina neglecta emerged. This adorable small butterfly was flying in large numbers on March 5th, 2023.

The weather has now turned back to winter with high winds and nighttime temperatures hovering near or below freezing for the next ten days.

What will happen to the first brood of Celastrina neglecta (males who emerge ahead of females) since they are not equipped to survive freezing temperatures?

By searching thoroughly I managed to find a few late flowerers, so all was not lost. This diminutive beauty was just past it’s prime but still eye catching. I think it may have been a victim of an overnight frost.

'CENTRE STAGE.'

The exceptionally dry Spring last year gave a poor showing of Green-winged Orchids in Cribb's Meadow. Most of the predominantly purple ones were burnt to a crisp and very stunted.

It could so easily have been a wasted journey, but for my discovery of 2 x pale pink colour variants growing close together in the arid meadow.

Instant elation and so uplifting because I had never seen pink variant G-WOs before :-)

The one shown in this image was in prime condition with all flowers on the spike open and undamaged. The flowers were such a delicate pale pink colour that it was hard to detect the even paler centres on their broad, 3-lobed lower petals. There were fewer spots than usual on the lower petals too. A few random darker pink 'splodges' would make a more accurate description!

I focussed on the centre flower when making the image.

NB: The other nearby variant was a slightly darker pink than this one. It had just peaked prime condition and developed a few brown spots. *See previous image.

'SELECTIVE FOCUS ON A MYSTERY CACHE'.

It was the lower right flower that I was focussing on.

I was aware of some kind of a mass on the lower petal, but couldn't work out what I was looking at in the harsh sunny field conditions.

Back at home and viewing the image on a large screen hasn't helped as much as I hoped either. I don't think I'm looking at Cuckoo Spit produced by a Froghopper, because the individual elements within the mass seem too uniform, level and aligned. This leads me to conclude it must be an egg cluster laid by an invertebrate of some kind, although there seem to be an exceptionally large number of eggs.

I wish I had spent longer with this find and made lots more images from different angles. I know it's not the most arresting image of a GWO you will see on Flickr, but it may prove to be intriguing and of interest to some viewers. I'm hoping someone in Flickrland can perhaps solve the mystery!

Whirling winds and churning clouds in the atmosphere of Uranus formed a dark feature large enough to span two-thirds of the United States.

Astronomers used the Hubble Space Telescope to take the first definitive images of this dark spot on Uranus in 2006. The elongated feature measures 1,100 miles by 1,900 miles (1,700 kilometers by 3,000 kilometers).

The answer to subpar lighting conditions at the famous Lone Cypress is simply to have Dark Spot and Light Spot pose in front of it!

I wanted to take photos of the ISS in front of the sun, but I didn't point the telescope to the correct part of the sun - only a bit :-( - . So I could take "only" a beautiful picture of the sun with the dark spot 2664.

Took a walk in Idaho in late November. I love that you can travel 7 miles from Washington and get to somewhere that has trees. TREES, and not wheat.

There was next to no light in this part of the woods, so my exposures were pretty long, which i really have never done before, especially with IR film. This is one of the shots that came out pretty nice. Most of the shots though had some very strange darkspots all over them. I have no idea why, my best guess is that IR film is tricky and that Diafine might not be good for developing this film.
