When the rain really began to pound the roof tonight, I ran for the camera. I wanted to see if I could find a bird. Just one, and after 50 photos, this drenched goldfinch seemed intent to stay motionless. Rotated his head a few times, but that was it.
Having fun in the rain. Comments unnecessary, of course.
Now thinking of old friends in New Orleans as floodwaters rise, again.

It was a dark and stormy night, and the Sandcastle said to the Driftwood, Driftwood, tell us a story……

"Dark and stormy" doesn't tell the story. Shooting the tail end of sunset while a massive storm moved in, I drove to four different locations, of which this was the last. By then the storm had overtaken me. The lightning strikes were farther away, and big raindrops were beginning to spatter my windshield. I had no idea that in a few minutes I would be creeping home along the rural two-lane highway, barely able to see beyond my car's hood through the sheets of rain.
I managed only two shots from this spot before the skies opened up. This wasn't the image I was hoping for, but it's chock-full of atmosphere - literally and figuratively.
This marks the start of a short set of square images. Sometimes square is the best choice. I don't always know that in the field, and so I always shoot full frame horizontal or vertical, but often I am envisioning a square crop. Truthfully, though, that wasn't the case here. I could barely see to frame my shot; I have processed it much, much lighter than it appeared in real life.
Tech data: 24mm manual focus lens (from 1981), tripod set up inside car, cable release, f/8 or thereabouts, shutter on "B". Focus, if possible, open the shutter, wait for a lightning strike. Give up.

taktaktak... taktaktaktak... ping!
"It was a dark and stormy night. The black sky was broken by white-blue arcs of lightning and the hot red streaks of the Red Baron's bullets.
Snoopy, the world famous Super-Beagle shook an angry fist! He would end this madness soon enough!"
taktaktak... taktaktaktak... ping!
Snoopy's faithful and adoring girlfriend, the ever charming Fifi, an intrepid reporter for the Daily Beagle, snapped rapid shots, immortalizing the event.
A beam of pure energy flashed across the landscape, knocking Charlie Brown for a loop! Aha, the enemy was trying to deprive Snoopy of his supper by stopping his loyal human!
taktaktak... taktaktaktak... ping!
But that would not work! With a sound of triumphal trumpets and beautiful lights, Snoopy's best friend Woodstock flew in from above with copious amounts of root beer and pizza!
The Red Baron shouted in anger and fled. Once again evil was thwarted and supper was good."

The eeriest serendipitous occurrence has happened
in just the past two days!
Many years ago I read two classics, "The Giver" and
"A Wrinkle in Time" . . . both, ironically filled with
sci fi and fantasy, with a major focus on LOVE!
Last night we watched the movie version of "The Giver" . . .
Yesterday we were in a few antique stores where I purchased this miniature iron! Out of the "blue" Madeleine L'Engle's book popped into my head, so I set up a still life with my larger collection.
In refreshing my memory on the plot of L'Engle's book, I had forgotten that it also was a bit abstract, but with a focus on Meg using LOVE to free her father from "IT's control."
dodododod, dodododo!
I had forgotten about the first line of the story, too!
"It was a dark and stormy night"
. . . written by English novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton in the opening sentence of his 1830 novel "Paul Clifford" . . .
also by Madeline L'Engle in "A Wrinkle in Time" . . .
Wren: "Dru, read me a spooky story please?"
Dru LaRue: "Alright Wren..."It was a dark and stormy night.."
A concept shot I tried out during my recent 365 project... but not quite the shot of the day. Are you ready for some 365 out-takes?
through him
i speak
with tongues
i speak
ancient
and old
words form
falling
from you
into me
through him
i learned
of you
through him
i found
you
speaking in tongues
speaking of ancient rites
speaking of old myths
through you
he spoke
now
through me
he speaks
and
everyone
everyone
forever after
will hear him
through me
i won't hide
i won't hide him
i won't speak in whispers
i won't speak in myths
through him
i speak.

I have always loved to watch a good lightening storm, this is my first attempt at shooting lightening but it will not be my last. About the time I think that I started "getting it" the rain started to hard for me to stay outside. I am tired now so I am going to bed now. I will be visiting my "regulars" soon. ...Night y'all ;-)

I don't know why, but this made Snoopy's opening words to his "Thanksgiving" novel:
"It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly, a turkey rang out!"
Happy Thanksgiving to all!

The first autumn storm flooded cellars (and cinemas) and dumped roughly 50 mm (that's two inches if you are metrically challenged) in just a few hours.

Drusilla had been preparing for her Little Witches Initiation for months. Despite being a dark and stormy night, she would have to successfully navigate her flying broom through a five mile obstacle course. She was a bit nervous (it just wouldn't do to fall off your broom and land with your skirt over your head, now would it?) but felt prepared for the task ahead. Wish this little one luck on her magical night!
This trip I for once took my tripod with me. I really wanted to get a sunset or sunrise shot, which I did not get. However one late night I did grab my camera and tripod and went out on the Springmaid Pier. I was able to come away with a few really good shots. This one I found really cool with the sky, along with the storm/rain in the distance. Along with the light coming from the hotels I thought it made for a great capture and probably my favorite.
