The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the DHR or the Toy Train, is a 2 ft gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal. Built between 1879 and 1881, it is about 88 km long. It climbs from about 100 m above sea level at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 m at Darjeeling, using six zig zags and five loops to gain altitude. Six diesel locomotives handle most of the scheduled service, with daily tourist trains from Darjeeling to Ghum – India's highest railway station – and the steam-hauled Red Panda service from Darjeeling to Kurseong.
The line follows Hill Cart Road, which is part of National Highway 110. The track is on the roadside for long stretches, and both track and road might be blocked by a rockslide. Since a length of the road is flanked with buildings, the railway line often resembles urban tramway tracks. To warn pedestrians and drivers of an approaching train, engines are equipped with very loud horns and whistles which train drivers sound almost constantly. (Wikipedia)
We encountered this train as we were coming into Darjeeling. In some cases, it seemed to almost touch the front steps of the homes that it passed. The tracks criss-crossed the road with no signs or lights, so drivers and pedestrians have to watch out and listen to the train.
On 5 December 1999, UNESCO declared the DHR a World Heritage Site.

After a somewhat traumatic journey overnight from Katwa we arrived at New Jalpaiguri to find the early morning departure to Darjeeling had long gone. We quickly negotiated with a nearby taxi driver for the hire of his taxi for the day. He seemed to be aware of exactly what we needed, a fee was agreed, and off we set in hot pursuit. He was a good guy and we were able to catch the little train up before Tindharia. Here the train is passing through the town of Mahanadi, after a loco change at Tindharia. Loco is 'B' class No. 782, A Sharp Stewart product of 1899. The train is the 07.15 from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling.
And horse back riding for tourists, on hire.

I'm discontented with homes that I've rented
So I have invented my own.
Darling, this place is lovely oasis
Where life's weary taste is unknown
Far from the crowded city
Where flowers pretty caress the stream
Cozy to hide in, to live side by side in,
Don't let it apart in my dream
From Tea for Two
On my own, I would wander through this wonderland alone,
Never knowing my right foot from my left, my hat from my glove,
I'm too misty, and too much in love.

My Darjeeling D Class loco made great plumes of steam due to it being an articulated loco with two sets of drivers. As seen in this pan shot, the big loco was a big success at the steam-up in Scranton this weekend.
I've run this loco at past steam-ups and each time I bring different passenger cars. For this run, I opted to bring my set of green Isle Of Man (IOM) coaches, which ran smoothly all day.
