The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the DHR or the Toy Train, is a 610 mm (2 ft) gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal.Built between 1879 and 1881, it is about 88 km (55 mi) long. It climbs from about 100 m (330 ft) above sea level at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 m (7,200 ft) at Darjeeling, using six zig zags and five loops to gain altitude. Ghum station is situated at an altitude of 2,258 metres (7,407 ft). Six diesel locomotives handle most of the scheduled service, with daily tourist trains from Darjeeling to Ghum – India's highest railway station – and the steam-hauled Red Panda service from Darjeeling to Kurseong. Steam-enthusiast specials are hauled by vintage British-built B-Class steam locomotives. The railway's headquarters are at Kurseong.

After a somewhat traumatic journey overnight from Katwa we arrived at New Jalpaiguri to find the early morning departure to Darjeeling had long gone. We quickly negotiated with a nearby taxi driver for the hire of his taxi for the day. He seemed to be aware of exactly what we needed, a fee was agreed, and off we set in hot pursuit. He was a good guy and we were able to catch the little train up before Tindharia. Here the train is passing through the town of Mahanadi, after a loco change at Tindharia. Loco is 'B' class No. 782, A Sharp Stewart product of 1899. The train is the 07.15 from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling.
My Darjeeling D Class loco made great plumes of steam due to it being an articulated loco with two sets of drivers. As seen in this pan shot, the big loco was a big success at the steam-up in Scranton this weekend.
I've run this loco at past steam-ups and each time I bring different passenger cars. For this run, I opted to bring my set of green Isle Of Man (IOM) coaches, which ran smoothly all day.

Mount Kangchenjunga or Khangchendzonga with an elevation of 8,586 meter (28,169 feet) is the third highest mountain of the world. It is called Five Treasures of Snow after its five high peaks. The Tibetan words are: Kang (Snow) chen (Big) dzö (Treasury) nga (Five).
Mark Twain traveled to Darjeeling in 1896 and later wrote in 'Following the Equator' : "I was told by a resident that the summit of Kinchinjunga is often hidden in the clouds, and that sometimes a tourist has waited twenty-two days and then been obliged to go away without a sight of it. And yet was not disappointed; for when he got his hotel bill he recognized that he was now seeing the highest thing in the Himalayas."!!
Kanchenjunga (Nepali: कञ्चनजङ्घा; Hindi: कंचनजंघा; Sikkimese: ཁང་ཅེན་ཛོཾག་), sometimes spelled Kangchenjunga, is the third highest mountain in the world, and lies partly in Nepal and partly in Sikkim, India. It rises with an elevation of 8,586 m (28,169 ft) in a section of the Himalayas called Kangchenjunga Himal that is limited in the west by the Tamur River, in the north by the Lhonak Chu and Jongsang La, and in the east by the Teesta River. It lies about 128 km (80 mi) east of Mount Everest.
Kanchenjunga is the second highest mountain of the Himalayas after Mount Everest. Three of the five peaks – Main, Central and South – are on the border between North Sikkim and Nepal. Two peaks are in the Taplejung District, Nepal.
Kangchenjunga Main is the highest mountain in India, and the easternmost of the mountains higher than 8,000 m (26,000 ft). It is called Five Treasures of Snow after its five high peaks, and has always been worshipped by the people of Darjeeling and Sikkim.
Until 1852, Kangchenjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world, but calculations based on various readings and measurements made by the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1849 came to the conclusion that Mount Everest, known as Peak XV at the time, was the highest. Allowing for further verification of all calculations, it was officially announced in 1856 that Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world.

I'm discontented with homes that I've rented
So I have invented my own.
Darling, this place is lovely oasis
Where life's weary taste is unknown
Far from the crowded city
Where flowers pretty caress the stream
Cozy to hide in, to live side by side in,
Don't let it apart in my dream
