Spoon feeding in the long run teaches us nothing but the shape of the spoon.

E. M. Forster

As far as iconic pieces of public art go, none may be as daringly modern or whimsical as Minneapolis’ iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry.

This giant spoon and cherry was erected in 1985 by artist Claes Oldenburg and his wife, Coosje van Bruggen and is the centerpiece of the Walker Art Center’s Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, the largest urban sculpture park in the world. Oldenburg is an artist who is known for making oversized versions of everyday objects and food products. Together with his wife he set up a number of public sculptures, including Chicago’s Batcolumn sculpture. The spoon was Oldenburg’s idea, who had a habit of doodling spoons ever since 1962 when he was inspired by a spoon resting on a piece of fake chocolate. The cherry in the piece was van Bruggen’s idea, wanting to use it as a comment on the garden’s otherwise staid layout.

The spoon itself weighs 5,800 pounds and the cherry, another 1,200 pounds. The cherry’s stem also acts as a fountain which sprays into the bowl of the spoon and off into the pond beneath. Even the pond itself has meaning, being shaped to resemble a linden seed, drawing attention to the rows of linden trees planted nearby.

The city of Minneapolis seems to have largely embraced the massive sculpture, expressing almost universal outrage when Spoonbridge and Cherry was vandalized in 2012 as part of a “Kony 2012” protest. The artwork was cleaned up and still remains as a somewhat goofy, definitely unforgettable icon of the Minnesota city.

I hope you are having a good Sunday? I must say that we had high expectations for today due to snow storm that was apparently heading our way! After waking up early this morning I was disappointed to see that snow never actually came. Let’s hope tomorrow is a better day! Till then I will leave you with a frame from yesterdays sunrise. I wanted to give myself a challenge and try to pull out what it turned to be a very complicated focus stack. What do you think?

Montazuma Castle, Camp Verde Arizona .

This is a well preserved Sinagua Indian ruin,Sinagua meaning without water it is 5 stories high and has 20 rooms . Early settlers called this Montazuma Castle but it was built before Montazuma was born, he was never here . It was built in the 1300s and abandoned by the 1400s ,no one knows why or where the people went . This is easily one of my favorite places to visit !

The lions at Burgers' Zoo had just been fed and it took this lioness a lot of effort and perseverance to nick a single bone from the rest of the pride. Once she had secured it, she was very nervous and protective, glaring at lions and humans alike, daring them to come and try to take it away again.

I am one who never trespasses people's houses, but this guy's house (my neighbor) has a long long yard and its end is right next to my side yard separated by a wire fence. The light at this particular end of his yard is great in early in the morning or early evening. His tree branches have been calling out my name every year now for the last 3-4 autumns ever since i knew what light meant to photography. So this year, the dare devil in me finally caved in to call of the good light. So one early evening last week, i took a little stool and finally treaded onto foreign land by climbing over the fence for the first time in the 12 years i live in my house. Once i made over to his side of the yard, i made sure he couldn't see me by hiding behing this big pine tree trunk and snapped away few shots.... I was there for a good 10-15 minutes, but not without apprehension that he'd be jumping out of nowhere in his yard to catch me in the act :) When i finally jumped back to my side of the fence and had some time to reflect on my action later in the evening, I was fairly convinced a pediphile's last concern or interest would be a grown man standing around his tree with a little camera.... time will tell.

A "Daring Jumping Spider" awaits on a peony bud. Only a half inch long, they use highly specialized eyesight to actively hunt and stalk prey.
