SINOPSIS:
Kyle (Jim Verraros) intenta ligarse a Troy (Marco Dapper), un guapo modelo de desnudos recién llegado a la ciudad. Aconsejado por sus amigas Gwen (Emily Brooke Hands) y Tiffani (Rebekah Kochan), Kyle se hará pasar por hetero para conquistar el corazón de Troy, con lo que acabará apuntándose a una asociación para ex-gays y se echará novia. Pero Marc (Brett Chukerman), el ex-novio de Kyle, decide su propia estrategia: quedarse con el modelo mostrando su lado más gay.
The River Chew in flood at Dapp's Hill Bridge, Keynsham, Somerset, 27 December 2020. In 1968 extremely heavy rain in the Mendip Hills caused a flash flood which resulted in large parts of Keynsham being inundated and much damage. The County Bridge on the River Avon just after the confluence with the Chew was washed away and communication between this part of North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire was disrupted for many months. As a result Keynsham railway station, which was due to close, was kept open. It is still open today and is well patronised.

Cette statuette est sans doute la première d'une longue série de figures de reliquaires fang du Gabon acquises par Paul Guillaume, qui en était grand amateur. Présentée parmi les sculptures de Côte d'Ivoire lors de l'exposition de la galerie 291 à New York en 1914, elle fut sans doute vendue au photographe Paul Haviland, qui la céda à son frère Frank. Sie waren Herz und Seele der New Yorker Viertel - jetzt haben sie Ladenschluss für immer. In New York fallen Traditionsgeschäfte im Dutzend der Krise zum Opfer. Ein bezaubernder Bildband zeigt Geschichte und Untergang der Läden, bei denen jedes Schaufenster ein Kunstwerk war. Von Marc Pitzke, New York
Die 14th Street war früher mal eine richtige Vorzeigemeile. Sie quert Manhattan, wo sein Bauch am dicksten ist, trennt im Westen das Greenwich Village von Chelsea, im Osten das East Village von Gramercy. Die Einkaufsstraße verkam aber schon vor einiger Zeit zum tristen Ramschkorridor - eine Billigoase inmitten einstiger Bohème-Viertel, deren Mieten längst unbezahlbar geworden sind für die Künstler und Immigranten, die hier lebten.
So elend wie jetzt war es hier aber schon lange nicht mehr. Wer heute die 14th Street entlangläuft, kommt sich streckenweise vor wie in einem Armenviertel - obwohl nur wenige Schritte weiter neue Luxus-Apartmentblocks funkeln. Zahllose Ladengeschäfte stehen leer, verbrettert und vergittert, mit Graffiti und Postern markiert. Die meisten Familienbetriebe sind verschwunden, Markisen zerrissen oder bis aufs morsche Gerüst abmontiert. Übrig bleiben nur Franchise-Ketten und Fast-Food-Hütten: Dunkin' Donuts, Subway, Starbucks.
Das "Nimbal DVD Paradise", ein Schnäppchenparadies für Importfilme, ist nicht mehr. Ebenso "Dapper Dan", der "adrette Dan" mit seinen Retro-Herrenanzügen: Handwerker sitzen in dem leeren Ladenlokal, "zu vermieten" steht im Fenster. Gegenüber räumt der Kleidermarkt die letzten Regale aus, "alle Schuhe fünf Dollar". Nebenan sind komplette Wäschesets auf dem Gehweg gestapelt, 5,99 Dollar das Stück, bewacht von einem grimmigen Schwarzen. "BIG DEAL$", steht grell über der Tür. "Store Closing."
Eine Stadt verliert ihr Gesicht
Ausverkauf einer Straße: Immer mehr kleine, alteingesessene Geschäfte müssen aufgeben - Opfer der Wirtschaftskrise. An der 14th Street offenbart sich das krass, aber ein ähnliches, stilles Drama spielt sich nicht nur hier und in vielen anderen Ecken Manhattans ab, sondern überall in New York: Lower East Side, Chinatown, Little Italy, Hell's Kitchen, Harlem, in Brooklyn, Queens, der Bronx und sogar Staten Island.
Eine Stadt verliert ihr Gesicht. "Die Liste wird länger und länger", sagt der Fotograf James Murray SPIEGEL ONLINE über das dramatische Verschwinden der Kramläden. Murray wohnt selbst am Ostende der 14th Street und hat den Zeitenwandel zusammen mit seiner Frau Karla im Bild dokumentiert. "Es ist extrem traurig."
Die Murrays begannen schon vor zehn Jahren, das Aussterben der "store fronts", wie sie hier heißen, zu protokollieren. Daraus entstand ein einzigartiges Fotobuch*, das diesen Monat herauskam und plötzlich aktueller, prägnanter ist, als je beabsichtigt - ein Nachruf auf ein New York, das unrettbar zugrunde geht.
Salami seit sechzig Jahren
Anfangs waren es noch die üblichen Probleme, die den Ladenbesitzern zu schaffen machten: steigende Mieten, kommunale Bürokratie, Mangel an Erben, demografischer Wandel. Inzwischen jedoch hat die Krise sie und ihre Kunden voll erwischt: Kredit ist unerreichbar geworden, keiner kauft mehr ein - und wenn, dann nur in großen Ketten. Der Einzelhandel spürt die Rezession inzwischen am härtesten.
Es ist aber eben dieser Einzelhandel, mit seinen "mom-and-pop Stores", dem Äquivalent des Tante-Emma-Ladens, der das Straßen- und Stadtbild New York Citys ausmacht - die wahre Seele der Metropole. Von den sich nach Wolkenkratzern hochreckenden Touristen oft übersehen, bestimmen diese Familienbetriebe seit vielen Jahrzehnten das Leben der Leute.
"Katz's Delicatessen", einer der berühmtesten Lebensmittelmärkte der Stadt, existiert seit 1888, sieht heute noch so aus wie vor 60 Jahren und erfand seinen Slogan im Zweiten Weltkrieg ("Send A Salami To Your Boy In The Army"). "Lichtenstein & Co." verkauft seit 1903 Näh- und Schneiderbedarf an der Delancey Street. Die Zinkfassade von "Emey's Bike Shop" an der 17th Street stammt von 1900.
Lieferungen selbst an Feiertagen
Viele sind Anker für Einwanderer, die hier ihre Muttersprache hören können und heimische - "ethnische" - Waren und Lebensmittel bekommen, die es bei den charakterlosen Handelsriesen nicht gibt. "Wenn diese Läden fallen", schreiben die Murrays, die für ihr Buch etliche der Besitzer und Manager interviewt haben, "ist die ganze Nachbarschaft bedroht."
Die "Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery" backt seit 1910 Teigtaschen nach altem rumänischen Rezept "Knish", wie sie es sonstwo kaum noch gibt. "Russ & Daughters", eine Spezialadresse für koschere Milchwaren, wurde 1914 an selber Stelle eröffnet - heute das letzte Geschäft seiner Art auf der Lower East Side. "C. DiPalo's Latteria" in Little Italy knetet seit 1925 Mozzarella, sieben Tage die Woche.
"Wir tun fast alles, um unseren Kunden die Ware zu bringen", sagt Brian Schames, der das Farbengeschäft "M. Schames & Son" auf der Lower East Side führt, in vierter Generation einer russischen Immigrantenfamilie. Das meint er ernst: Die Schames liefern einem die Farbeimer persönlich ins Haus, selbst an Wochenenden, Feiertagen und abends.
Der erste Cappuccino der USA
Die Legenden, die sich um diese Läden ranken, gehören zur Geschichte New Yorks wie der Union Square Greenmarket oder die Staten Island Ferry. Nebenan von "Jimmy's Stationary & Toys" in Brooklyn wurde der Teddybär erfunden, mit dem Segen von Präsident Teddy Roosevelt. Im "Caffé Reggio" im Village, eröffnet 1927, gab es den ersten Cappuccino der Vereinigten Staaten.
Der Niedergang begann nicht erst mit der Rezession. Die Aufwertung, sprich Verteuerung der Viertel vertrieb viele. An ihre Stelle traten moderne Wohnblocks, Sport- und Sonnenstudios, Bürohäuser, Supermarktketten. Nur wer sein Gebäude besaß, musste keine Vertreibung fürchten - etwa der bekannte Buchladen "Strand" am Broadway.
Andere gingen am Kleingedruckten zugrunde. Neue Hygienevorschriften verboten das Aushängen von Räucherschinken - das Ende für den "E. Kurowycky & Sons Meat Market" im East Village und viele andere kleine Metzgereien. Außerdem erteilt die Stadt schon länger keine Genehmigungen mehr für alte Neonzeichen, die sich sowieso nicht ersetzen lassen, da sie keiner mehr so herstellt - das optische Merkenzeichen vieler Läden verschwindet so auch zusehends.
Das Aus nach 83 Jahren
Die Bäckerei "Gertel's" schloss 2007, nach 83 Jahren. Der "2nd Avenue Deli", 1954 eröffnet, überlebte den Mord an seinem Gründer Abe Lebewohl, aber nicht die letzte Mieterhöhung 2006. 2007 erstand er zwar neu - aber in Midtown East an der 33rd Street, ein deplaziertes Kuriosum. Das Restaurant "Howard Johnson's", seit 1959 legendär im Times Square, erlag 2005 der Mieterhöhung.
Die Murrays hatten Mühe, nachzukommen mit ihrer 35-MIllimeter-Rollfilmkamera, die sie wählten, um der groben Patina der Schaufenster und Fassaden gerecht zu werden. Fast ein Drittel der Geschäfte, die sie ablichteten, waren verschwunden, bevor sie das Vorwort fertiggeschrieben hatten. "Inzwischen ist es fast die Hälfte", sagt James Murray. "Aussehen und Gefühl ganzer Gegenden haben sich geändert, ebenso ihre Individualität und ihr Charme."
Unter den jüngsten Opfern seit der Veröffentlichung des Bildbands: der Fünfziger-Jahre-Coffee-Shop "Ideal Dinettes", der "C&N Everything Store" in der Bronx (anno 1956), das "P&G Café" auf der Upper West Side (1933 eröffnet) und der Metzger "B&B Meat Products" in Brooklyn, der ein als Cowboy kostümiertes Plastikschwein in der Auslage stehen hatte.
Das Fotografenpärchen Murray weigert sich trotzdem, die Situation zu beweinen. "Statt das Glas halbleer zu sehen", sagt James, "versuchen wir, es halbvoll zu sehen." Mit ihrem Buch wollten sie den Leuten "die Augen öffnen" für das, was in ihrer Ecke verlorengeht, "und vielleicht helfen, dass sie die Läden unterstützen und so vielleicht sogar retten".
Für die "Rite Aid Pharmacy" an der seventh Avenue ist es dafür zu spät: Obwohl sie einem Konzern gehört, fungierte diese Filiale stets als Nachbarschaftsladen, wo Medikamente und Toilettenartikel billiger waren und der Service persönlicher als gegenüber bei der seelenlosen Drogeriekette "Duane Reade". Doch Rite Aid fährt seit zwei Jahren Verluste ein, und jetzt leeren sich die Regale der Dependance im Village, ohne nachgefüllt zu werden. Und draußen über der kaputten Neonreklame hängt das gleiche Schild wie mittlerweile überall hier: "Top-Ladenfläche zu vermieten."

Emile COLONNE, baryton français (1885-1970).
ONE OF THE MOST ELEGANT AND RADIANT BARITONES OF HIS GENERATION. FOLLOWING HIS DEBUT IN FRANCE AND AFTER A FEW SEASONS IN NORTH AFRICA AND ACROSS EUROPE, HE WAS RECRUITED BY CORNEIL DE THORAN FOR THE 1923-1924 SEASON AT THE THEATRE ROYAL DE LA MONNAIE, WHERE HE BECAME A PILLAR OF THE THEATRE, SINGING SECONDARY ROLES THEN MOVING ON TO ALL PRINCIPLE CHARACTERS. HE POSSESSED A ROUND, WARM AND POWERFUL, RESOUNDING VOICE, A VERSATILE SINGER, HE WAS CAPABLE OF TACKLING ALMOST ANY REPERTOIRE. MANY LEADING CREATIONS AND A SPLENDID RECORDING LEGACY FOR THIS VERY DAPPER AND EXQUISITE SOLOIST.
Né à Toulon, il chante d'abord dans sa ville natale, puis dans la région, notamment à Marseille, puis à Nice et Cannes. Ses premiers succès lui permettent d'être invité sur les scènes de théâtres de plus en plus importants (il se fait remarquer à Nîmes dans Le Barbier de Séville puis dans Hérodiade, 1920). Il donne également de nombreux récitals et concerts, et l'Opéra Comique le remarque mais lui propose l'Opéra Garnier pour La Flûte enchantée aux côtés de Lotte Schöne. C'est un triomphe.
Puis, dès la saison 1923-1924, il s’établit à Bruxelles, car Corneil de Thoran est désespérément à la recherche d’un premier baryton d’opéra et opéra comique (il l’avait apprécié à la scène à Nîmes et à Bayonne). Il consacre une partie importante de son activité au récital et au concert, tout en assurant quelques rares créations pour la radio. Marié à la pianiste française Marie-Louise Bonduel (1886-1970) qui, après leur rencontre à Marseille, lui fait rencontrer des personnalités influentes du milieu musical français, ses parents tenant salon et fréquentant des compositeurs tels que Xavier Leroux, Claude Debussy, Albert Dupuis, Camille Saint-Saëns et beaucoup d’autres.

Il chante également sur les principales scènes de Belgique. Tout au long de son association avec la Monnaie, il signe plusieurs créations et côtoie les meilleurs solistes invités et les artistes de la troupe.
Apprécié de tous, étrangement, le soprano Clara Clairbert lui vouera une "haine" ou plutôt, une antipathie marquée .... Emile Colonne, d'un raffinement sans égal et issu d'un milieu socioculturel résolument différent de celui de Madame Impens ... n'aura, hormis la collaboration artistique, aucun point commun avec le soprano. Les brèves de comptoir, les railleries de coulisses et les beuveries du bar A la Vocalise (tenu par Madame Impens) resteront étrangères au baryton ...
C'est pourtant dans la mort qu'ils se retrouveront, leurs tombes étant extrêmement proches .... au cimetière de Bruxelles ...
Il laisse un précieux et magnifique, mais trop rare legs discographique où l'on peut apprécier sa voix sonore, ronde et chaleureuse.

So Thursday sixteenth June Patk. Yesterday the Westlock sub saw quite the lashup on McLennan - Edmonton train A418. GP40 - WC 3018 and GP40-2R - IC 3140 were the stars of the consist, still wearing their original paint schemes. A418 is seen here between Dapp and Pibroch, just north of Westlock. 10/22/2024

The Shipbuilding series of pendants are inspired by a song of the same name, made as part if my Song Lore blog series.
They are made from brass with Ice Resin and various found objects, brass components, bits of paper from an old nautical themed card, freshwater pearls, and glass beads. The resin is crystal clear, and very reflective, and amplifies the collage inside the brass pendant with amazing detail. Unfortunately, they are so reflective, they are a bit hard for me to photograph, but I love each one dearly!
This pendant was made from a raw brass frame pendant, which was heated with flame to give it interesting coloration. Some of the pendants in this series were also hand domed with a hammer and dapping block. The pendant was then carefully filled with the paper and found object bits and covered with a water-like layer of crystal clear resin.
Last of the wooden grain elevators in Westlock. Remember my waiting for a train at Dapp? Well, I was lucky enough to have to wait for he SAME train at Pibroch! But luckily due to the way the roads and tracks crossed, I didn't have to wait for it at Westlock.
