In mei waren wij enkele dagen in Venetië, een prachtige stad die je toch 1 keer in je leven gezien moet hebben. Elke avond maakten wij dankbaar gebruik van het "blauwe uur" om enkele gebouwen en bruggen te fotograferen.

De "Ponte dei Sospiri" in Venetië ofwel in het nederlands "brug der zuchten" is een verbinding tussen de verhoorkamers in "Palazza Ducale" (Dogepaleis) en de gevangenis. Vroeger moesten de veroordeelden over deze brug heen lopen alvorens ze in de kille en vochtige kerkers werden opgesloten. Via de raampjes van de brug zagen de gevangenen dan voor de laatste keer het daglicht. De "Brug der Zuchten" is gebouwd in kalksteen tussen 1600 en 1603 en werd ontworpen door Antonio Contino, wiens oom Antonio da Ponte de bekende "Rialtobrug" ontwierp.

The "Ponte dei Sospiri" in Venice is a bridge between the interrogation rooms in "Palazza Ducale" and the prison. In the past, the convicts had to walk over this bridge before they were locked up in the cold and damp dungeons. The prisoners saw the light of day for the last time through the windows of the bridge. Het Varlaäm-klooster

The Varlaam Monastery

On a very cold day in march of this year, Mr. Monster was walking through the snow-covered streets of Monschau, Germany, lost in thought. His shoes were half broken and were absolutely not suitable for walking in the snow. Yet he walked there with the insides of both his shoes soaking wet. He had been having a tough time in the Netherlands, and he was feeling overwhelmed. He felt like he needed a break from it all. As he walked, he noticed the small, cozy city around him. De terminator heeft een onregelmatig verloop vanwege het bergachtige maanoppervlak. De schaduwen van bv. heuvels en bergen zijn er lang, met als gevolg dat details van het maanoppervlak daar vanaf de aarde goed zichtbaar zijn; een gegeven waar de maanwaarnemers en maanfotografen onder de amateursterrenkundigen dankbaar gebruik van maken.

Gemiddelde afstand tot de aarde: 384.450 km Temperatuur tussen -173 °C en 127 °C.

Een meteoor is een kortstondig lichtspoor aan de hemel dat men ziet wanneer een klein stofdeeltje op ca. 100 km hoogte met een enorme snelheid in de atmosfeer van de Aarde terecht komt. Een deeltje ter grootte van een erwt geeft al een bijzonder heldere lichtstreep.

Dag op dag acht jaar geleden was het nog stevig genieten van stoomtractie op haar mooist in de gigantische openluchtmijn van Sandaoling. De klim van de laadplaats in Xikeng tot aan Xuanmeichang (waar de treinen weer werden gelost) was iets minder dan 7km lang, maar zelfs dat korte stukje spoor was de reis naar deze desolate plek méér dan waard!

Ook in de openluchtmijn gebeurde er natuurlijk spooronderhoud en die momenten waren erg dankbaar om de werklieden mee in beeld te nemen. Op deze foto komt de JS8190 aanbulderen met een beladen kolentrein, maar het werk op het tweede spoor gaat gewoon verder. Als je goed kijkt, zie je trouwens ook de JS8197 nog net boven de trein uit steken. Nu dat de beladen kolentrein is gepasseerd, kan ook die locomotief haar lege trein naar de laadplaats duwen. Op goede dagen had je hier tussen 10u en 17u ruim tien beladen steenkooltreinen met even veel kippenvelmomenten. De treinen kruisten elkaar vaak op dit stuk, dus het was dus geen overbodige luxe dat er hier twee sporen lagen. Fantastische tijden die helaas niet meer terugkomen…

Day by day eight years ago, it was still solid enjoyment of steam traction at its finest in Sandaoling's giant open-air mine. The climb from the loading area in Xikeng to Xuanmeichang (where the trains were unloaded again) was just under 7km long, but even that short stretch of track was well worth the trip to this desolate place!

Of course, track maintenance was also happening in the open-air mine and those moments were very rewarding to capture the workmen in pictures. In this photo, the JS8190 comes roaring in with a loaded coal train, but work on the second track continues as the goals need to be achieved. If you look closely, you can also see the JS81197 just sticking out above the train. Now that the loaded coal train has passed, that locomotive too can push its empty train to the loader. On good days, between 10:00 and 17:00, you had over ten loaded coal trains here with just as many goosebump moments. So it was no luxury that there were two tracks here as trains would often cross each other on this section. Fantastic times that unfortunately are not coming back....

Dit moet ergens aan de randen van Poeldijk zijn (vermoedelijk).

Blue-hour shot of 2 iconic buildings in the center of my hometown Eindhoven (NL). Left is the futuristic building named Blob. At right is the formal Philips lamp factory with tower were lamps were tested, now in use as lofts, shops and restaurant.

This formal Belgian railway (ligne 38) got broken-up and was transformed to a long distance bike-path a few years ago. This tunnel was left and during the years it got overgrown by trees.

De in 2019 geopende Kempentoren in Spoorpark Tilburg is neergezet om een fraai uitzicht te bieden over de stad richting Brabantse Kempen. Inmiddels maken echter ook treinspotters dankbaar gebruik van het 30 meter hoge bouwwerk voor het uitzicht over de spoorbaan. NS loc 186 016 passeert hier met de intercity van Den Haag Centraal naar Eindhoven. De toren met 192 treden is open qua constructie maar voor iemand met hoogtevrees - gedreven om er kost wat kost toch foto's te maken - 'te doen' :-)

Ergens in de afgelopen twee weken is er erg nuttig snoeiwerk verricht bij Dorst, waardoor de (binnen drie jaar aardig dichtgegroeide) stek aan de oostkant op de geluidsmuur weer te gebruiken is. Daar werd vanmiddag dankbaar gebruik van gemaakt toen de fraaie 'Flying Dutchman' Vectron van LTE passeerde. De loc is onderweg met de Linz shuttle naar de Maasvlakte. Een uit de loc stekende lantaarnpaal is achteraf weggepoetst.

This tiny treefrog was on my wishlist for a very long time. My sister went last year to a location and was fortuned to find them. This year she invited me to come with her to a location where there is a great population of these adorable green little frogs. I am very gratefull for that and enjoyed every minute of it.

This old man took some time to take an autumn walk in this wonderful scenery.

On this dark day I had to choose for F-4 by ISO-1600.

Breda, 22 juli 2017 - In de jaren zeventig van de twintigste eeuw was NS naarstig op zoek naar nieuwe locomotieven. De machines van de serie 1000 en van de tijdelijke serie 1500 raakten aan het eind van hun technische levensduur en door groei van het reizigersvervoer en de beoogde introductie van de DDM-dubbeldekkers was ruim geen woord dat van toepassing was op toekomstige materieelpositie. Op verzoek van NS presenteerden diverse fabrikanten hun producten op de Nederlandse sporen. Zo kwam Henschel-BBC met het voor de gelegenheid tot elektrische locomotief 1600P omgebouwde prototype van de DE2500. Het Franse Alsthom nam locomotief BB7003 mee, die later de basis zou vormen voor de SNCF serie BB7200. Hoewel de 1600P bij de beproevingen naar verluid hoge ogen gooide, viel de keus uiteindelijk toch op de Franse inzending. Deze zou sneller geleverd kunnen worden en dat dan ook nog eens tegen lagere kosten. Eind jaren zeventig ontving Alsthom daarom de order voor 58 nieuwe elektrische locomotieven. Na een relatief korte bouw- en ontwikkeltijd deden de eerste 1600’s in 1981 hun intrede op de Nederlandse sporen; de laatste exemplaren volgden in 1983. De betrouwbare en sterke machines vormden al snel de ruggengraat van de NS-vloot. De 1600’s reden duizenden kilometer per dag en waren de eerste vijftien jaar van hun dienstverband vaak voor zowel reizigers- als goederentreinen aan te treffen. Aan deze flexibele inzet kwam echter een eind toen de goederentak van NS in 1999 als NS Cargo werd afgesplitst van het grote moederbedrijf en daarbij de eerste 37 1600’s mee kreeg. De overige locs werden tot 1800 vernummerd en bleven in reizigersdienst. De materieelpositie van NS bleek in de jaren daarna echter toch wat te krap, terwijl die van NS Cargo wat ruimte overliet. Voor het slepen van de tijdelijke ICK-rijtuigen nam NS in 2002 daarom nog eens tien 1600’s van de goederenvervoerder over. Daarmee kwam de verdeling uit op de uiteindelijke 27/31. In de jaren daarna nam de druk op de inmiddels ruim twintig jaar oude locomotieven wat af, dankzij de instroom van treinstellen en moderne (multisysteem)locomotieven. De inmiddels ontstane private vervoerders maakten hier dankbaar gebruik van. Zowel NS Cargo (inmiddels via Railion overgegaan in DB Cargo) als NS verkochten inmiddels in totaal krap twintig 1600’s aan de Bentheimer Eisenbahn, ACTS/HUSA, EETC, HSL Logistik Benelux, LOCON Benelux en RRF. Anno 2019, dus ruim 35 jaar na de introductie, zijn ongeveer de helft van deze locomotieven nog altijd in actieve dienst. Zo ook loc 1618 die na vijftien jaar buiten dienst te hebben gestaan dankzij een revisie in 2017 weer terugkeerde op de Nederlandse sporen. De machine, inmiddels eigendom van EETC en verhuurd aan Captrain, rijdt sindsdien rond gehuld in een op de huisstijl van de Franse zusterlocomotieven geïnspireerde livrei. De 1618 werd lange tijd vooral ingezet voor de GEFCO-autotreinen tussen Bad Bentheim en Roosendaal. Andere inzet kwam echter ook voor, zoals toen de loc op 22 juli 2017 werd vastgelegd bij Breda Prinsenbeek met een graantrein op weg naar Bad Bentheim. Door het wegvallen van het autovervoer, dat nu direct door voormalig opdrachtgever Rail Force One wordt uitgebaat, en de beëindiging van de containershuttle tussen Moerdijk en Geleen is het takenpakket sterk gereduceerd. Wat resteert is de keteltrein die op werkdagen tussen de Vlissingse Sloehaven en DSM in Geleen pendelt.

Breda, 22 July 2017 – In the 1970s the Dutch Railways (NS) was eagerly looking for new and powerful electric locomotives. The older classes 1000 and 1500 were reaching their end of life while in the meantime passenger transport was growing rapidly, due to which new double deck rolling stock was to be introduced. A loco shortage was thus foreseen for the nearby future. At the request of NS, several manufacturers presented their star products on the Dutch railway network. Henschel-BBC for instance came with one of its prototype DE2500’s, which was rebuilt into the electric locomotive 1600P for the occasion. The French manufacturer Alsthom brought along the BB7003, which would later form the basis for the SNCF BB7200 series. Although the 1600P allegedly performed better during trials than the French locomotive, NS still opted for the latter. These could be delivered more quickly, and at a lower cost. At the end of the 1970s Alsthom therefore received the order for 58 new electric locomotives. After a relatively short design and construct-phase, the first 1600 arrived in the Netherlands in 1981; the last would in 1983. The reliable and powerful machines soon formed the backbone of the Dutch railway fleet. The 1600’s ran thousands of kilometers per day and were for the first fifteen years used interchangeably for both freight and passenger transport. This flexible operation came to an end in 1999, when the freight-branch of NS was separated from the main holding as NS Cargo. From then on 37 of the 1600’s were assigned only to cargo operation. The remaining locomotives were renumbered into the 1800 series and stayed in passenger service. Due to another loco shortage, this time caused by the purchase of the temporary ICK-carriages, NS acquired an additional ten 1600s from NS Cargo in 2002. The final distribution in the 1600 series thus came to 27 locomotives for freight and 31 for passenger service. In the years following, the introduction of new EMU’s and multi system locomotives lowered the pressure on the utilization of the by then twenty year old 1600/1800 fleet. Numerous private operators thankfully made use of this situation. NS Cargo (which was renamed into DB Cargo) and NS sold about twenty 1600’s in total to the Bentheimer Eisenbahn, ACTS/HUSA, EETC, HSL Logistik, LOCON Benelux and RRF. In 2019, over 35 years after their introduction, about half of these locomotives remain in active service; among which loco 1618. It had been out of service for about fifteen years when it was overhauled and brought back to service in 2017. By then owned by EETC and hired to Captrain, the locomotive was repainted from NS yellow into a livery inspired by the French counterparts. 1618 was at first mainly used for Gefco car trains between Bad Bentheim and Roosendaal, but occasionally saw other uses as well; it was pictured here in Breda Prinsenbeek on 22 July 2017 with an aggregate train towards Bad Bentheim. However, after Rail Force One took over the car trains and the container service between Moerdijk and Geleen got cancelled, the tasks for the 1600 dwindled. What remains is the tank car train that runs on weekdays between Sloe port near Flushing and DSM Geleen.

Actors played with perfection the liberation of this village 71 years ago in the weekend from 19-20 september 2015. The photo was shot in colour, lightroom was used for split level colour and contrast corrections. Even with this modern technique it's imposible to imitate the work of Robert Capa.

Dankbaar motief voor avondopnames, ik was niet de enige!! Prachtige stad!!

Nadat het statief opgehaald was in het hotel was het natuurlijk hopen op nog een MÁV Taurus, die zich uiteraard niet meer liet zien... Gelukkig waren er nog wel wat andere treinen die op de foto konden, al bleek de afwisseling hier niet heel groot. Een treinstel van het type 4020 werd dankbaar vastgelegd tussen al het dubbeldekker geweld. Ondanks de hoekige vorm, blijf ik deze ruim 45 jaar oude stellen toch leuk vinden.

Op de oostover van de Hafenbahn Stadtwerke Essen is een fraaie kraan een dankbaar motief voor DB-treinstel 628/928 442.

Kaeskoppenstad maakt dankbaar gebruik van het rijke historische decor van gevels, bruggen en grachten in Alkmaar, waardoor je even vergeet hoe de stad er anno 2022 ook alweer uitzag.

Khao Hin Thoen Stone Park is located in Prachuap Khiri Khan province in the narrowest part of Thailand, which is only 15 kilometers wide, close to the border with Myanmar Burma. Khao Hin Theun Stone Park is a hilly area where many large granite stones are stacked naturally. The fact that these large rocks appear to remain balanced despite their size and weight reminds us of the delicate balance and stability in nature. It is a reminder of the forces of nature and the unique geological processes that create such formations. These formations are often the result of centuries of geological processes, including erosion, sedimentation, landslides and other forces. It's amazing how nature can create these complex structures over time. From the top of the hill you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Gulf of Thailand and the surrounding coastline. Just a few kilometers away, at the Singkhon checkpoint, is the border with Myanmar; a route with rich historical significance as it once served as a military trail during the late Ayutthaya period. At the summit there is also a secluded temple built between three large massive granite boulders. Essentially an open cave, this temple is a hidden gem maintained by a lone monk. This venerable monk, now 78 years old, has been living here in solitude for more than 40 years. The temple and living area are built into the large boulders. Surrounded by lush green forests, this open temple cave also offers an opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty and tranquility. Hiking trails are available for those who want to enjoy the natural environment. The peaceful surroundings and natural beauty make it a popular place for meditation and contemplation.

Hidden deep within the lush landscape of Khao Hin Thoen Stone Park is an open cave that serves as the home of the wise Buddhist monk Pasek Pakuno, a 78-year-old man. He has lived in this remote hideaway for 40 years. His story has become a legend among the locals. Venerable Pasek Pakuno left his worldly possessions at a young age and dedicated his life to spiritual enlightenment. For four decades he has found peace and his calling in this remote environment. His daily routine is simple. He awakens with the rising sun and greets the new day with meditation and prayer. The sound of birds singing and the rustling of the trees serve as his companions during his meditative hours. He lives on donations from passers-by, which he gratefully accepts, but he has no material wealth. The monk sleeps on a simple mat on the cool floor. He welcomes them all with kindness and a smile. He loves the quiet moments when the sunset fills the cave with a soft light, and he looks to the stars in the night sky as witnesses to his spiritual journey. His life story inspires many to think about their own choices in life. He reminds them that happiness is not always found in material possessions, but in the simplicity of the heart and soul. His cave remains a sacred place, an oasis of peace and reflection for those who find their way to this remote place. I was deeply impressed by Monk Pasek because of his dedication to spirituality. De gemeente Den Haag heeft op het Plein en op de Grote Marktstraat geïmproviseerde openbare toiletten geplaatst.

Ik ben ze daar heel dankbaar voor. Doordat de horeca gesloten is deze mogelijkheid zeer welkom.

Heel apart is wel dat op de doeken heet woord toiletten is bekroond met de koninklijke hoofdtooi.

Kort na de geboorte krijgt het kindje de nodige controles, ik heb hier een foto van mijn pasgeboren zoon gemaakt, maar het gaat voornamelijk om de aandacht voor de verloskundige. Voor de 24uurs beschikbaarheid en inzet van deze mensen kan je niet meer dan dankbaar zijn! En ze heeft zo te zien veel plezier in haar werk 😊.
