This was our first stop of the day on Saturday, August 27. We had spent the night in Marion, IL then drove through St. Louis to near Defiance, MO. Daniel Boone settled here in his later years near Femme Osage Creek. The Historic Daniel Boone Home and Boonefield Village is owned and operated by Lindenwood University.
By 1799, Kentucky was becoming too crowded for the Boone family. They were invited by the Spanish to move to Upper Louisiana (present day Missouri) and they gladly accepted. When Daniel Boone came to settle in Missouri, he was 65 years old. He brought his wife, Rebecca, and several of his children with him. Though this home is named after Boone, it was actually the home of his youngest son, Nathan. The elder Boone acquired land about four miles from this location, however he appears to have spent the majority of his time in his son’s home.
The house took several years to construct since it was four stories tall and the limestone walls were 2½ feet thick. It was built this way to provide a means of protection in case of an attack from the nearby Indians. While Boone stayed in Missouri, he kept busy doing his appointed duty of Commandant of the region and Syndic, or judge. Daniel Boone passed away in the home on September 26, 1820.
