The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, also known as the Berlage Stock Exchange, is one of the great monuments of Dutch architecture of the 20th century. It is a beautiful brick building built from 1898 to 1903.

Damrak is one of the most picturesque and old parts of Amsterdam. This is where we were planned to take the bus for our day trip. A whole row of venerable old houses was reflected in the water, it was extraordinary.

The start of a walk from Amsterdam Centraal Station to the very nice little city Muiden. Though I have been in Amsterdam uncountable times I've been to places there I'd never been.

The Damrak houses first introduced me to the Dutch word gezellig (meaning cozy or homely) I was always wandering in from the train station after dark and I would constantly stop and stare at these houses thinking it felt like an incandescent oasis in a city of fluorescents, warming the night and the Damrak with its soft glow.

When you walk by during the day usually things are shut tight against the throngs of tourists walking back and forth from the central station but at night when the crowds have dissipated the curtains open and the world seems to be welcome to become a witness to the nocturnal activities of the residents.

The Damrak historically was originally part of the Amstel river below the Dam that gave Amsterdam its name, Rak means a straight stretch or place to gain speed, so the Damrak was actually the straight piece of river below the Dam across the Amstel where sailors would pick up some speed on their home stretch to the port of Amsterdam.

I took this on Sept 10th, 2017 with my D750 and Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens at 44mm 25 sec f/11 ISO100 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz , Luminar and DXO

The Damrak is an avenue and partially filled in a canal at the centre of Amsterdam, running between Amsterdam Centraal in the north and Dam Square in the south. The street was located on a rak (reach), a straight part of the Amstel river near a dam; hence the name. In the 19th century, a section of it was filled in. The "Dancing Houses" of the Damrak are crooked historic houses alongside this canal are and are an iconic symbol of the city of Amsterdam.

The Damrak is an avenue and partially filled in canal at the centre of Amsterdam. It is the main street where people arriving at the station enter the centre of Amsterdam.

Because of the former stock exchange building, the monumental Beurs van Berlage, and several other buildings related to financial activities erected there in the early 20th century, the term "Damrak" has come to be a synonym for the Amsterdam Stock Exchange in the same way "Wall Street" is synonymous with the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.

Although I don't visit Amsterdam on a frequent basis, I always enjoy the city. Normally I don't go for photographing purposes, but this time I felt it was time to at least spend a bit of time on it!

Amsterdam is a beautiful city with its canals and distinctive architectural style. The Damrak area is particularly impressive although that does mean some pretty enormous crowds of tourists to get caught among.

Watching city life series.
