Constantine Vaporis writes extensively about the daimyo mansions in Edo in his book "Tour of Duty"; I have yet to read much of the book and am not sure how much space he devotes to the Kyoto mansions, but in any case, in the opening chapters, he has already mentioned them, and mentioned most interestingly that daimyo had to request special permission to stop in Kyoto during their sankin kotai journeys to Edo, and that while in theory such requests should have been nearly always denied, they were in fact almost always approved.
While the daimyo and their retinues generally occupied special inns in the post towns maintained for that purpose - often spilling over into other inns, temples, or even private homes if space was needed - in Kyoto, many domains (han) maintained their own mansions.

This is the front gate to the Tokyo residence of the Date family of the former Uwajima clan, built during the Taisho Period, after the family had moved to Tokyo and been honored with noble status. The structure is made entirely of zelkova, and with the mukuri-style (camber-roofed) guard box, resembles the traditional gates in front of the estates of daimyos. The crossbars (kabuki) on top of the posts feature the Date family crest.
The Uwajima clan was located in the western area of what is now known as Ehime Prefecture. Tozama-Daimyo Date (tozama-daimyo refers to a daimyo who was not a hereditary vassal of the shogun prior to the Edo Shogunate) was a descendant of Hidemune Date, who was the son of Masamune Date, the Daimyo of Sendai. The Daimyo of Uwajima was renowned for his loyalty to the central feudal government.
This gate was relocated to Koganei Park around 1965, and has remained here ever since.

The Uwajima Date were the lords of Uwajima, in what is today Ehime prefecture, on Shikoku. They were a much smaller off-shoot branch family of the much more famous, and more powerful, Date family of Sendai, to the far north.
This gate was once the entrance to their Meiji or Taisho period mansion in Tokyo, that is, built after the fall of the shogunate, after daimyo domains and indeed samurai status itself had been eliminated. The gate was moved here around 1965.
