I'm not much of a New Year's resolution type guy, but this year I got excited about an idea that I discovered while reading the blog of a friend of a friend.
The idea comes from Marjorie J. Thompson's book, Soul Feast, and it's called a Rule of Life. It's basically a short set of statements that define your spiritual goals and direction.
My Rule of Life for 2008 is still under construction, but the gist of it is this:
I will be a better friend to:
> God ~ spending quiet time alone with Him each week nurturing our relationship
> Others ~ walking with them toward Jesus instead of just pointing the way
> Myself ~ prefacing each decision I make with the phrase, "As a holy man ..."
The books pictured above, Howard Publishing's Songs of Faith and Praise, the Harper Study Bible (Revised Standard Version) and the Brownline Daily Planner for 2008, are all being used in my quiet times alone with our Father.
I'm studying, meditating on and praying the Psalms. With each new Psalm, I'm choosing a complimentary song and studying and singing the lyrics. The Daily Planner is for recording reflections, prayers, blessings, etc.
A nasty virus and an overloaded schedule made it a little harder to get started than I had planned, but I'm already doing much better in each area than I did in 2007, and for me ... that's the start of something good!
