Rothley Station Great Central Railway (GCR), Leicestershire - pictured here at 10.45am on Saturday 23rd October 2021, is the point (where behind me) the 4 mile double track Main Line from Loughborough Central becomes single track for the remaining 4 miles to Leicester North.
Britain in the 19th Century, developed a 'Token System' to enable safe single line working. They come in various forms: staff (as shown in the hand of the platform railwayman), tablet, key and ball.
On the left BR Standard Class 5 4-6-0 73156 has just returned from Leicester North. Upon arrival the Driver handed over his single section token which is about to be replaced in 'Grey Cabinet', before a different token can be removed and given to the Driver of the awaiting BR Class 45 Diesel D123 Leicestershire and Derbyshire Yeomanry so it too can safely depart to Leicester North. Within the grey box this procedure triggers a series of 'Electrical Impulses' via a series of relays to the nearby Signal Box - alerting the signalman so the signals and points can be safely and correctly set.
Because the tokens have different configurations, by this means it ensures that at any one time only one and the correct token is available to be issued to the Driver.
Coincidentally, Friday 22nd October 2021 saw D123 celebrate its 60th Anniversary - being built at Crewe works in 1961. It was withdrawn from service in 1987 and arrived at GCR in 1998.
Mindful the UK is now seeing a rapid resurgence in COVID variant outbreaks and many areas in the North are experiencing severe weather and flooding this week, I very much hope you are all still keeping safe and well.
Happy Fence Friday everyone. Have a great weekend too!

I had plenty of time to get here from Quorn after photographing 26043 there on the working thirty-five minutes earlier. This location is probably the most popular on the line and I've taken countless photos here, but I couldn't resist uploading a shot of a green "Peak" with small yellow warning panels on a rake of maroon mark 1 coaches. The only thing spoiling the 1960s look is the lack of a correct headcode, "0000" not normally being displayed until displaying them was discontinued in the mid-1970s, well into the rail blue era.
Of course, between trains there was time for a good natter with the other photographers here.

Today was the official re-opening of the CSX Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore. After a round of speeches and photos CSX 1827 leads a ceremonial double stack train through the tunnel and onto Baileys Wye.
According to my brief research, these Class 45s are nicknamed 'Peaks', due to being the successor of Class 44s, which were named after Scottish and Welsh mountain peaks, an interesting fact I thought. Here D123, a preserved loco at the Great Central Railway is seen just about to arrive into Loughborough Central. These British diesels and their complete lack of any headlights or significant running lights don't help when the nose is in shadow!
I took this photo about 5 minutes before having to start the speed walk back to the actual Loughborough station, for my train back to London which was leaving in about 20 minutes. From there it was a slightly over 2 hour journey to Heathrow where my friends had kindly been waiting with my checked bag for our 2200 flight back to Sydney. Gotta make the most of the time over there!
Class 45 "Peak" D123 Leicestershire and Derbyshire Yeomanry approaches Quorn and Woodhouse station, working 2A05 09.00 Loughborough Central - Leicester North, the first southbound passenger train on the second day of the Great Central Railway Spring 2026 Diesel Gala.
27056 is on the rear; it hauled the return working all the way back to Loughborough, with D123 being dropped off the rear here in order to take the train of minerals to Loughborough.
The name carried by this loco was originally carried by class 46 46026 (which, being a Gateshead loco, I saw regularly in its last few years of BR service); D123 was 45125 under TOPS.
This was a new angle for me, only available at a gala on the first few trains of the day as the light angle becomes too head-on by mid-morning. I wasn't sure a long loco like this would fit beyond the shadow of the telegraph pole without starting to block the post of the signal on the left, and it doesn't quite; the shadow is actually over the roof of the rear cab, but isn't really noticeable. The next train, with class 37 D6700, would have been better, but the sun disappeared.
The weather forecast for today had suggested sun in the morning and then some thin cloud during the early afternoon as a cold front came over, but clearing out late in the afternoon. However, the front was a few hours early and I was disappointed that, having driven from home under almost clear skies, thin cloud began to build not long after I passed Melton Mowbray and it thickened noticeable when I arrived. It was still bright and there were definite shadows, but the cloud had certainly taken the edge off the sun. While my shot of D6700 on the second train had virtually no shadows, the sun came out completely for the third (which should have been 26043 but was actually class 14 D9525) and was then in and out for the next hour or two. The afternoon, however, saw the high cloud clear completely, and there was unbroken sunshine.

The Great Central Railway in Leicestershire was due to hold a 'First Hurrah' Event this weekend with four steam engines operating, a different diesel locomotive on a freight train each day and a diesel unit on the Mountsorrel Branch - but because of present restrictions it had to be postponed.
This first series shows the motive power to have been used today.

Two-car Metro-Cammell DMU formed of cars E50266 and M50203 approaches Kinchley Lane bridge, working 2C29 15.05 Loughborough Central - Rothley Brook on the second day of the Great Central Railway Spring 2026 Diesel Gala.
The DMU was originally intended to be hauled by locos all day, being coaching stock set E on the timetable, and this working should have utilised 27056. However, a problem with 26043 earlier in the day meant the DMU ran under its own power, although this messed up the loco diagrams whereby loco-hauled trains only going to Rothley Book (including the minerals) were worked north by a different loco, resulting in 27056 having to run light engine in order to bring the minerals back north.
This was the third of five southbound trains I photographed here while the sun was still on the front - "Peak" D123, "Iris" (from a wider vantage point, and framed by tree branches), this, "Hymek" D7018 and class 37 D6700 on the minerals.

First Off
Class 45 D123 (45125) 'Leicestershire and Derbyshire Yeomanry' works the first service of the 2019 GCR Spring Diesel Gala with 2A02 Loughborough - Leicester North.
Class 45 D123 'Leicestershire and Derbyshire Yeomanry' was also running on passenger trains throughout the day as well but also did a couple of light engine runs on driver experience turns in the morning.
Rostered on Stanier 8F 2-8-0 48305 our turn began at 05.15 and consisted of engine prep, 2 return trips to Leicester top & tailed with Peak D123 & hand over to our relief on the station platform.
After handover we all ran to the water tank where we said our farewells - the relief crew took water & I took this shot.
On a grey winters day D123 Leicestershire and Derbyshire Yeomanry departures Loughborough with the 12:30pm service for Rothley, 11th January 2009.
Locomotive History
D123 was built at Crewe Works and entered traffic in November 1961. Like most of the class, it was initially allocated to Derby, where it worked express trains on the Cross Country and the Midland Main Line routes. The engine was allocated close to the Midland Main Line all its life although its last six months in traffic were based at Tinsley in Sheffield for Trans-Pennine services, after the introduction of HSTs to the Midland route. In 1974 the engine became one of the fifty engines in the class to be fitted with electric heating, and it became 45125. It was withdrawn on 7th May 1987, and was towed for storage at March on the 20th May 1987. The engine was stored with a number of others for four years before purchase for preservation. It was towed to Hull Dairycoates depot in late 1991, where it stayed for the next seven years until D123 moved to Loughborough, arriving on April 2nd 1998.
