Just five miles today (1/28) and I felt like I got away with something. Of course it could always be worse.
After missing going out due to slick snow yesterday, today it was just cold, but with pavement. 12 miles done with a 26°F wind chill.
Ten miles in the rain, and I never really got wet. I’m employing waterproof socks and these Hikenture gloves. Hands and feet were the last problem to solve for wet winter riding, and think I’ve arrived.
Six miles on January 8, 2025. The Strawfoot musette was dusted with snow as I emptied the mailbox. It was 24°F with the WSW 10 mph with bringing a windchill of 9°F. It’s been a harsh January so far, with only 46 miles to show for it (compare to 102 last year).
12°F with a wind chill of 3°F. I managed to do five miles with much wool and vaseline on exposed skin. So far, only one day of missed riding this January, though with very suppressed mileage. Yesterday I crossed paths with a bobcat near this stretch (ie it’s always worth going out).
Today was relatively balmy at 32°F with a 12 mph south wind. Good for 11 miles. This month has been a grind, so far, for riding.
Enough pavement was exposed today to limit days off the bike to three. Just five miles today and a stop by the little red shed. 20F with a windchill of 14F. Great sunlight though.
I put new large toeclips on the Jack Taylor to accommodate shoe covers. It's been pouring rain all day and I'm not about to let this be my first non-riding day of December!
I discovered that the road was merely wet when I shoveled my way down the driveway. I had time to get in 5 miles, better than nothing!
Today was 14°F with a windchill at -4°F, similar to yesterday. I’m trying for consistency in going out, and have missed one day so far this January. The target right now is 200 miles for January. I didn’t spot any bobcats today.
For the first time in 34 years I had my driveway (0.13 mile long) plowed instead of shoveling it by hand.
Yes, the iconic little red shed is visible if you view large and look through the front wheel. Only possible in winter of course. [if you’re clueless as to what I’m going on about here, visit the “Little Red Shed” album]
I’ve relocated all of my wool layers, shoe covers etc. Soon it will be at that point where it takes as long to dress and undress as it does to do the ride (say, when it’s 20F with less the ideal road surfaces. Tons of time to prep, maybe only 30 minutes on the road.) 15 miles ridden on Nov 16, with 265 for the month and 6923 for the year.
First snow of 2021 and I was out shooting the morning bike traffic. It's only a fraction of the normal levels due to lockdown and everyone working from home, but with Climate Change, we don't get much snow anymore, so it was great to be out there shooting.
My ride was quite short (3 miles) as conditions were not so safe with visibility decreased combined with weekend traffic. I had two taillights going, but still felt compelled to pull off of the road when a car approached.
I managed to best the previous 10 years of January mileages. One day of riding was missed due to snow (1/22).
I’m feeling very at home on the 1981 Jack Taylor, which got only some marginal use in 2022. I had 187 miles on the 14th for January and will see if I can top 400 for the month (which would best the previous 10 January efforts.)

Swope Road gets strong winds out of the west at this elevated spot. This is the scene six days after the bomb cyclone on December 23rd.
Replacing the leather Thinsulite work gloves I’ve used for so long. These Hikenture gloves are waterproof, provide a good grip on the bars, and are not stiff like the leather gloves. And they also have Thinsulite (I used them at about 32F for 12 miles with good results.) I’ve rolled the cuff up on the left glove so I can see my watch.

After 5 days off of the road due to ice and slush, I finally got out for a 20 mile ride. I was treated to a pit bull attack that went on for about 50 feet before he broke off. I landed a good punch on the dog’s nose early on (I think I landed two more) which may have bought me more space…the owner was shrieking and I was bellowing! My HALT! repellent will be out and ready on this road going forward! 7020 miles for 2022 today.

I got a surface I can ride on, after two sessions with the shovel. Well, actually I walked the bike out to the road, but after 5 miles all my fine motor control is activated for riding on this stuff. It’s funny, if I ride it in and out on a day like this, I could tell you which tire track in the snow was outgoing-not so straight! If you turn the iPhone on “pano” and rotate it from sky to ground you get a nice long view like this.
