On Brunswick Street, in the inner Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, stands a very grand set of Victorian Italianate terraces built in 1881, called Barcelona Terrace. Each terrace has a small front garden set behind cast iron paling fences. The gardens vary from terrace to terrace: from well-established, formal and beautiful, to overgrown weed patches or non-existent in the case of one. One owner in particular carefully plants their garden with perennials every year. In February and March, their small garden bed is filled with Japanese Anemones (also known as Japanese Windflowers) in a wonderful dusty pink colour. One day when I was passing by, I noticed the owner’s bike leant up against the garden fence, and it struck me as a very European spirited shot. You usually see this sort of image coming from Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Paris, and certainly not Melbourne.

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 17th of July is “bicycles”. As I don’t ride a bicycle myself (I was delicate as a child and never learned), I had to resort to someone else’s, and the theme gave me a chance to upload a pretty photo from my archive that up until now I haven’t had the opportunity to share, even though I was very determined to do so at the time. Now I’m so pleased that I didn’t. I do hope that you like it, and that it makes you smile.

Japanese Anenomes or Japanese Windflowers are a species of flowering plant in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae, is native to Asia. In spite of their common names, these flowers actually derive from China from Hubei Province. In Chinese, these anemones are known as “da po wan hua hua”, which means “broken bowl flower”.

Blue Bicycle, outside the Smoke Stack Café, Edinburgh. I am a sucker for taking photographs of old bicyles, particularly when they have as much character and colour as this one!

Presently in the process of moving home, my computer and much of my camera equipment is in storage. I feel like I have had my arms cut off. Notwithstanding that, I always have my iPhone with me which does allow limited photography options.
