Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts data and demands a ransom payment. Cybercriminals use various types of ransomware to target individuals and businesses. The most common types of ransomware include encrypting ransomware, scareware ransomware, and screen-locking ransomware. Encrypting ransomware is the most prevalent type and encrypts the victim's files, demanding a payment in exchange for the decryption key. Scareware ransomware tricks victims into believing their computer is infected with a virus and then demands payment for a fake "fix." Screen-locking ransomware locks the victim's screen and demands a payment to restore access. Other types of ransomware include mobile device ransomware and data-leaking ransomware. To protect against these types of ransomware, it's essential to implement cybersecurity measures such as data backups, antivirus and anti-malware software, network monitoring, and employee training on phishing and social engineering tactics.
