Some fun facts of Hydrangea
1 ) Hydrangea is from Greek descent: "Hydro" means water and "angos" means jar or vessel. And in fact, hydrangeas need lots of water to thrive.
2) Each hydrangea color also has a meaning behind it:
Pink represents love and sincerity
Blue represents forgiveness
White represents boasting or bragging
Purple represents abundance and understanding
3) Hydrangeas are extremely poisonous. The compounds in the leaves release cyanide when eaten, so keep the plant away from small children or pets.
4) For one type known as bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla), you can change the color of their flowers by adjusting the soil pH with soil amendments.
The more acidic the soil, the bluer your hydrangeas will turn out. The more alkaline, the pinker your hydrangeas will be.
5) Hydrangeas are unique because they have super sticky pollen. That makes it difficult for wind to blow the pollen around, making these flowers perfect for allergy-prone gardeners. They're also fragrance free, which makes them a great addition for those who are headache prone or have sensitive noses.
6 ) It may look like hydrangeas have tons of petals, but they're actually called sepals. Sepals are small leaves that protect the flower bud. They usually start out green and turn into the rich pinks, purples, and blues that grab our attention.

The yellow-spotted millipede, almond-scented millipede or cyanide millipede, is a species of polydesmidan ("flat-backed") millipede found in the moist forests along the Pacific coast of North America, from Southeast Alaska to California. The dark coloration with contrasting yellow-tipped keels warn of its ability to exude toxic hydrogen cyanide as a defense. Despite the various common names given the species, the coloration pattern, cyanide defense, and associated almond scent occur in other flat-backed millipedes around the world. (Wikipedia)

This little millipede can express hydrogen cyanide when threatened and thus wears bright warning colors, and it is called yellow-spotted millipede. It lives in the rainy forests along the West Coast of North America. In the springtime I see them a lot and often in this formation where what I assume to be the male is hitching a ride on the female. The male has 30 pairs of legs while the female has 31.
According to Wikipedia, millipedes are some of the oldest known land animals.

#DoodlewashJune2021 prompt: Basket. Okay, so apples are gathered in barrels not baskets. But they both start with B, so I'm claiming it for the prompt. Did you know apple seeds contain cyanide? Eat between 80 and 500 seeds in one sitting and you could make yourself sick! Apples aren't the only fruit with cyanide in the seeds. apricots, cherries, peaches, pears, plums and prunes all have cyanide in their pits or seeds.

According to Wikipedia these large millipedes do not bite or sting, but they do exude cyanide when they feel threatened! So, I'm glad I didn't interrupt whatever it is he is doing here!

A bee joins a Zebra Butterfly feasting on a Passion Fruit flower.

I had the opportunity to enjoy the antics of the remarkable zebra longwing, Heliconius charitonius, as it visited flowering trees and shrubs along a trail through a swampy forest. Tropical butterflies in the genus Heliconius, such as the zebra, are notable for their longevity. These beauties live up to six months. Zebras and their kin evolved an interesting strategy to gather nutritious pollen used to sustain their long lives. The zebra flies a well-defined route through the forest visiting flowers that present a fresh batch of pollen and nectar each day. This behavior is called traplining and is employed by many tropical pollinators including bees, hummingbirds, and bats.
After collecting a gob of pollen on its long, straw-like proboscis, the butterfly secretes specialized enzymes to release the amino acids and other nutrients in the pollen. The nutrients are absorbed through the membranes lining the proboscis and used to produce eggs and maintain the zebra’s high level of activity zooming about the forest. In addition to visiting flowers laden with pollen, the zebra also searches for different species of plants in the passion vine genus, Passiflora.
These tropical vines bear the magnificent passion flower and following pollination, the passion fruit. Several species of passion vine are used by the immature stages of the zebra and other Heliconius butterflies as a source of food. These voracious caterpillars consume great quantities of leafy tissue on a daily basis. As a group, passion fruit plants are protected from most leaf-munching caterpillars and other vegan insects by a veritable witch’s brew of highly toxic chemicals including alkaloids, a family of toxins that include strychnine and nicotine, and cyanogenic glycosides, chemicals that release cyanide upon entering the body. However, using some clever metabolic machinery, the specialized Heliconius butterflies have turned the tables on passion fruit plants and now feast on their leaves with impunity. With so much munching by the larvae of the zebras and their kin, one wonders how the vines of Passiflora survive.
From the butterfly breeder/photographer - the passion fruit vines act as a 'host' for the zebra butterflies. I have many of those as well as Firebush which the butterfly enjoys. Adult zebra longwing butterflies feed on both flower nectar and pollen. The additional nutrients from the pollen enable individuals to survive for several months, far exceeding the normal two to four week adult life span of most other butterflies. Adult individuals often form small communal roosts at night. Sometimes they swarm around me - the first time they did that I was shocked.
Yes I was out in a preserve looking for a zebra on a passionflower when I took this photo - the bee was an 'extra'.

...you’ve probably seen the flight of the distinctive black butterfly with bold yellow stripes, the zebra longwing butterfly (Heliconius charithonis). Since 1996, it has been the Florida state butterfly. What you discovered is the mature larvae feeding on its host plant, one of many species of passionflower.
You really can’t confuse it with any other Florida butterfly. This impressive 2 1/2- to 4-inch flyer with its striking pattern prefers warm, damp, tropical hammocks and thickets. Just the conditions most of the state provides, especially central and south Florida.
Burnet Moth:-
Moths in the Zygaenidae family are commonly known as the Burnet moths and forester moths. The adults are day fliers, and although their antennae are clubbed they are still considered moths, not butterflies. The adults and larvae are warningly coloured to avoid predation. They sequester poisons such as cyanide.
There are around 800 species in the family worldwide, and 10 in the U. K. They often live in colonies isolated from others of the same species, consequently there are many races or sub-species.

Monticello, Arkansas. Built in 1906, the Allen House is located along North Main Street and features gothic-style architecture and wrought-iron fencing. The house was planned by local businessman Joe Lee Allen to be the most impressive house the town had ever seen. Unfortunately in December 1948 the family experienced a grave tragedy – their daughter, Ladell, consumed mercury cyanide-laced punch in the house’s master suite. Out of grief, her mother sealed off the room and it would not be entered by anyone for nearly four decades. During its time as an apartment building in the 1950s, tenants would report eerie occurrences, including hazy figures appearing in photographs, furniture being unexplainably rearranged and several reports of a lady sitting in a turret window. The Allen House is now open for historic guided tours by appointment and opens its doors the last two days of October for special Halloween tours.

Burnet Moth:-
Moths in the Zygaenidae family are commonly known as the Burnet moths and forester moths. The adults are day fliers, and although their antennae are clubbed they are still considered moths, not butterflies. The adults and larvae are warningly coloured to avoid predation. They sequester poisons such as cyanide.
There are around 800 species in the family worldwide, and 10 in the U. K. They often live in colonies isolated from others of the same species, consequently there are many races or sub-species.
