I finished my shift at work and bolted for the county fair grounds, with luck today I would find myself viewing the isthmus from above. Sadly upon arriving at the grounds, I found an empty stand for the helicopter tours; while there was a trailer advertising unfortunately no copter in site. As I briskly walked back to my car, I crossed paths with a couple whom asked me if I'd gone on a helicopter ride. To their dismay I gave them the bad news; but introduced myself none the less as "Chris Collins documentary photographer of all things Madison." The man seemed slightly disappointed that the copter wasn't present to give a ride above the city, and his girlfriend the same.
I pulled out my phone in an attempt to contact the company that was offering the rides, to no avail; as I gave the number to the man and he too tried without success on his phone. We both slowly made the walk back to our cars in the warm July evening, when suddenly a whirring noise came from above. As we looked up, our frowns turned to smiles and we had the helicopter in our sites. I was determined to go first, but decided it only seemed fair to let them go as I could wait for the front seat. As two young blonde gals jumped out of the helicopter as it landed on a grassy knoll near the fairgrounds I heard one yell "two or three?!" I responded back apparently with a voice too quiet for any too hear, and the next thing I knew the three of us were boarding the chopper.
I got the front seat, and the unknowing couple got the back two seats; I appreciated it as the glass was much less obstructed from the back (perfect for aerial photos). We took off and I began snapping write away, while the pilot chatted with air traffic controllers and the happy couple. Then I heard over the headset that we had been granted permission to do a flyby of the capital building. I was rushed, cramped, and out of room for changing my lens so I ran with it. The pilot asked if I was the guy who called earlier, and apologized for not taking my call; he expressed it's hard to answer a phone when your flying. I smiled and as I started to chat back to him, he hushed me and told me that he was cutting our communication as a "proposal was in progress."
Turning around, camera not nearly as ready as I would have liked it to be; the couples smiles had turned to a few tears of joy. I was still a bit confused, but turned around and continued to take in the isthmus snapping as many photos as I could as we began our descent. A mere ten minutes after we went up, we were coming back down. Once we landed and everyone said thanks to the pilot, I excited the chopper last to find the boy and girl hugging excessively. The girl had a box in her hand which had just a bit of sparkle in it, this is when I realized that the man had proposed her hand in marriage IN THE HELICOPTER!
As they pulled out a cell phone to take a selfie, it was my turn to propose a better idea; "Would you like a better picture?" Flashing my camera towards them, I explained it would be cool to include them in the 608 strangers aspect of my photography. After jotting a quick email address down, exchanging my business card, and then official introductions. I am happy to introduce May and Will! We clicked a few pictures, as they seemed to be rushing off; I managed to get the chopper taking off in the background with the big bling in the foreground. Icing on the cake, to tell the story "picture perfect" in so many ways!
This photo op was really a great change of pace from my strangers on the square, not that I don't appreciate them but it was just something so different. Plus being part of a couples engagement (that wasn't even part of the plan) was cool too! I suggest that if you like this write-up, you should check out the 100 strangers group. It's just full of awesome individuals and even more awesome encounters!

La parejita en Mt. Baldy, California. Amor en las alturas :)
Proverbios 18:22 El que hallo esposa hallo el bien, y alcanzo la benevolencia de Dios.
Rusty, burnt and waiting to get collected by the council. Another sad end to what once was someone's work life.
This is Becca and her boyfriend Devin...
Dec. 18 th is Becca`s 16th birthday! We are very proud of our daughter!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BECCA!!!
There's two things I know for sure:
She was sent here from heaven and she's
daddy's little girl.
As I drop to my knees by her bed at night
She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes and
I thank god for all the joy in my life
Oh, but most of all
For butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer;
sticking little white flowers all up in her
hair; "Walk beside the pony, Daddy, it's my first ride."
"I know the cake looks funny, Daddy, but I sure tried."
In all that I've done wrong I know I must
have done something right to deserve a hug
every morning and butterfly kisses at night.
Sweet 16 today
She's looking like her mama a little more everyday
One part woman, the other part girl.
To perfume and make-up from ribbons and curls
Trying her wings out in a great big world.
But I remember
Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer; sticking
little white flowers all up in her hair.
"You know how much I love you, Daddy, But if you
don't mind I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time."
With all that I've done wrong I must have done
something right to deserve her love every morning
and butterfly kisses at night.
All the precious time
Like the wind, the years go by.
Precious butterfly.
Spread your wings and fly.
She'll change her name today.
She'll make a promise and I'll give her away.
Standing in the bride-room just staring at her.
She asked me what I'm thinking and I said "I'm not
sure-I just feel like I'm losing my baby girl."
She leaned over...gave me butterfly kisses with her mama there,
Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair
"Walk my down the aisle, Daddy-it's just about time."
"Does my wedding gown look pretty, Daddy? Daddy, don't cry!"
Oh, with all that I've done wrong I must have
done something right.
To deserve your love every morning and butterfly
kisses-I couldn't ask God for more, man this is what love is.
I know I gotta let her go, but I'll always remember
every hug in the morning and butterfly kisses.

My boyfriend is really awesome for putting up with me.
Everytime I would have my tripod centered perfectly, a car started to drive around the corner.
At least we got some excersize.
My good old Treeson now has a friend ~ thanks to my sister!
And thanks to my son for the background.
The old one has gotten all dirty by travelling in my handbag since September 2009. Especially since he accidentally got into the same pocket with my keys and coins some time ago. I'm sorry.
Cute couple, Toy Sunday
Went to Symbiosis in Oakdale, California. Got to be an event photographer and loved every moment of it. It was kind of like Burning Man, but much smaller. And yes, I did wear a dead wolf on my head - but only at night and only when I wasn't working on photo assignments.
They're pretty cute. I love them.
This is at the Reverb in Tulsa. We were about to see Ringworm, Bitter End, Take Offense, Hardside, and Stay.
I got hurt during Ringworm. Like, really hurt. I'm used to getting hit at shows, and leaving with some bruises and mild concussions. But this was the worst I have ever experienced. I got crushed into a wall by a huge dude, and my shoulder was really.. fucked. I felt like I was going to pass out and puke, and I could barely breathe.
It still hurts to move, but I can't always be lucky I guess!

Enjoyed a great session with Dane Hadley and Madie Reardon last weekend. It was Homecoming, and these two were picked for their 9th grade class. They did great during the session. I'm so blessed to be able to do what I do! I'm truly grateful.
I've been thinking about selling all of my digital gear and going completely with my 3 medium format film cameras. Any thoughts? I'm almost 44 years old, grew up in the film era, and cut my teeth in this portrait business using these medium format film cameras. I love film so much more than digital. I love the entire process. I'm still undecided, but I am thinking hard about it.

Shane and Kalen
Yesterday was quite the day! Shane bought his ring like a week before I left for Australia and waited for 2.5 weeks to propose so I could photograph it! Shane is one of my best friends and have been helping him plan his engagement for quite some time, but while I was gone Ben and him came up with a new idea that was incredibly awesome!
However yesterday started not as I had planned… I woke up with some seriously bad back pain. I thought it was my bed so I laid down on the floor in my bedroom and the pain went from bad to worse. When I was 11 years old I felt something very familiar to this pain. I immediately knew that I had a kidney stone, because when I was 11 I passed one. Yes, you heard it right, I passed a kidney stone when I was ELEVEN years old. I was actually the youngest kid to pass a Kidney Stone in the state of Oregon. The pain got so bad that I started getting queasy and I ran into the bathroom to throw up. I had not eaten anything so all that happened was some dry heaving. Grant and Trent Creamer were drinking tea in the living room and had heard my moaning and almost vomiting. Their “are you all right?” turned into a “guys, we have to go to the emergency room…” I walked out the front door of our house to get in the car and the pain intensified. I collapsed on the ground in front of our front door. This was immediatly followed by a scream, “Tanner, are you all right?” Rachel Breiwick, a really good friend of mine works at the coffee shop across the street and had witnessed me walk out of my front door and collapse. I put my arm up and gave her a thumbs up. I wish it was a thumbs up…
Trent pulled the car around and I jumped in the front seat. My body was quivering, and I hoarsely told Trent the directions to the UW medical center which is only a 5 minute drive from my house. We walk into the emergency center and it literally took every ounce of strength in my body to stay upright. We had take an elevator to the 2nd floor and I desperately walked into the emergency room. You would think a person in my need and pain would be admitted immediately but it took 5 minutes of information giving and signing for me to be taken into the ER. (JACKED UP)
As I enter the emergency room, they immediately put an IV in me. The pain at this point had started to go away a bit so when she said she was going to give me pain killers I decided I would hold off until the pain worsened. The pain never got worse and about an hour later I was taken to get a CAT Scan. CT Scan’s are cool btw!
After being admitted back into my room, a 30 minute wait and the doctor comes in and says, “yup, you have a 2mm Kidney stone. The bad news is that you have only passed it through 2 of 3 passages. It still needs to pass into your bladder. The good news is that because its only 2mms when you pee it out you shouldn’t feel anything. Because your Urinary tract is larger than your Kidney tract you wont’ have any issues. We are going to release you and I will prescribe you some good pain killers, but expect to go through the same pain you went through today.
Here’s the deal, Shane, Ben and I had planned this super detailed engagement and now I had to leave the hospital and drive to magnolia to help out… I showed up at discovery park around 4 where Shane had planned on proposing around 7ish. The location of the proposal was down the beach right at the base of these cliffs. What made me nervous was my kidney stone which could have at any moment decided to pass, so I was praying that it would hold off for the next couple hours. But back to the proposal…
In order to be able to photograph the proposal without being seen we had to build a blind. Chris Mamales, Allen Lai, John Towne, Josh Splattstoesser , Ben and I built a huge shelter out of driftwood. On one end I dug a 2 foot deep hole in the ground for me to hid in. However because of how close it was I knew that if I started shooting right away that Kalen would hear me. I was close enough to hear what Shane was saying so I waited until he popped the question. That was then I poked my head out and shot through this little crack in the wood fort.
This moment was the top left photograph. I popped out of the hole and went to congratulate them. Allen, John, Josh, Ben, John then jumped out of the trees and surprised as well. The book in the bottom left was what Shane used to propose. As they walked down the beach, they walked around our barricade and walked up on a private little dining area. There was a table with wine glasses and a book. Then some fruit, a mexican blanket (for bugs) a bunch of candles and a hanging rope with little candle holders. Such a awesome place to end a wonderful day. We shot photos for a couple minutes and kicked down the barricade so they could see the sunset.
Shane had also set up a celebration at Kalen’s house with friends and family and we had a good time hanging out, talking, and listening to Becca’s stories…
Congratulations to one of the luckiest guys I know, as Ben said in his toast…. Shane snagged a girl WAY out of his league. Haha and Kalen! Make sure you never borrow Shane’s hats, because he may give you lice… Love you both!
Also the reason I wrote this super long story about Kidney Stones and incorporating it into the engagement is because I almost wasnt able to make it to even take these photos and it’s quite a crazy story to remember forever!
