I haven't taken many photos over the past several months - just too busy. I traveled to Spencer Island Wildlife Reserve just east of Everett, Washington last weekend (March 20, 2010), and this is one of the photos I took.
Thanks to katie072 and 1bluecanoe for identifying these birds as Tree Swallows. I hadn't been able to find a photo of a similar bird on the internet until they both told me the name. I thought that they flew like swallows! Both were near the top of an old snag, seeming to tend to a nest they were building in a hole in the old tree trunk. These birds are quite small - probably a couple of inches long, they'd circle and dart to catch insects (I presume), then return to the nest.
Canon 7D, 300mm f/2.8L IS/USM + 2x telextender, 1/1600 sec, f/7.1, ISO400, tripod with a Kirk ballhead, custom white balance.
Custom Mauser rifle in 45-70 photographed with a Nikon F and 50mm f1.8 lens on Plus-X film rated at iso 100. Processed with rodinal 1:100 for 17 minutes at 68 degrees F All my published books can be viewed here:
