Cusco Peru 2017 - Sitting all day at the San Pedro Market, hawking her half dozen rotting frogs. Maybe the fresh stuff was in the bucket.

My 5th visited of the New Seven Wonders of the World having seen the Colleseum in Rome Italy, the Great Wall in China, Taj Mahal in Agra India, and Petra in Jordan.

Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel, located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru, on a 2,430-metre (7,970 ft) mountain ridge. It is located in the Cusco Region, Urubamba Province, Machupicchu District, above the Sacred Valley, which is 80 kilometres (50 mi) northwest of Cuzco. The Urubamba River flows past it, cutting through the Cordillera and creating a canyon with a tropical mountain climate.

Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was constructed as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472). Often mistakenly referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas", it is the most familiar icon of Inca civilization. The Incas built the estate around 1450 but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish conquest. Although known locally, it was not known to the Spanish during the colonial period and remained unknown to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911.

Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls. Its three primary structures are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. Most of the outlying buildings have been reconstructed in order to give tourists a better idea of how they originally appeared. By 1976, 30% of Machu Picchu had been restored and restoration continues.

Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historic Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.

One of the many Spanish-era churches in the city of Cusco. The city is essentially the gateway to the Sacred Valley and onto Machu Picchu. The 11,200 ft elevation can bother some people, so you may have to take that into account. Cusco was the center of power for the Incas, and a fascinating city to walk around. The ridiculousness of colonialism comes alive, whereby the churches were built right on top of the foundations of the Inca fortresses.

Thanks for looking!

Déjame olvidar, ancha piedra, ¡a proporción poderosa,

sube a nacer conmigo, hermano.

Pablo Neruda: "Alturas de Machupichu" (extracto).

Los Jaivas: Sube a nacer conmigo hermano

Machu Picchu stands 2,430 m above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. It was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height; its giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments. The natural setting, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna. whc.unesco.org/en/list/274

Cusco Peru 2017 - Dressed in traditional clothes, it was interesting to see what looks like a Disney tee shirt underneath.

The narrow cobble streets of cusco, Peru

Inside the church of Santo Domingo there are still numerous rooms of the old Korikancha.

Inside one of these rooms the guide asks us to identify the smallest stone forming part of the walls of the room.

The stone in the center of the photo reaches, perhaps, 1 centimeter of side.

Here's one from Peru last January. Cusco is such a stunningly beautiful city. At 12,000 feet, it takes some effort to walk its steep hills and alleyways, but the views make it worth it!

Cusco, is a city in southeastern Peru, near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes mountain range. It is the capital of the Cusco Region and of the Cusco Province. The city is the seventh most populous in Peru, and in 2017 it had a population of 428,450. Located on the eastern end of the Knot of Cuzco, its elevation is around 3,400 m (11,200 ft).

The city was the historic capital of the Inca Empire from the 13th century until the 16th-century Spanish conquest. In 1983, Cusco was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO with the title "City of Cuzco". It has become a major tourist destination, hosting nearly 2 million visitors a year. The Constitution of Peru designates it as the Historical Capital of Peru.

Cusco's main square, Plaza de Armas, is a busy and vibrant place that marks the colonial centre of the city. The Plaza which features colourful gardens and wide stone pathways, is home to two iconic buildings; the Cusco Cathedral and the Church La Compania de Jesus. This area covers part of the area that was once the great inca square. Today, however, Spanish Colonial buildings dominate the architecture of the square, but many of the carved Inca stones remain. This is a beautiful and well maintained square, typical in Peru. Its a lovely place to wander around or sit and drink in the architecture, a must visit square when in Cusco.

The landscape was beautiful. Mountains very different than home. The river running through the mountains is the Urubamba River. It runs all the way through the Sacred Valley.

The massive yet refined architecture of Machu Picchu blends exceptionally well with the stunning natural environment, with which it is intricately linked. Numerous subsidiary centres, an extensive road and trail system, irrigation canals and agricultural terraces bear witness to longstanding, often on-going human use. The rugged topography making some areas difficult to access has resulted in a mosaic of used areas and diverse natural habitats. The Eastern slopes of the tropical Andes with its enormous gradient from high altitude “Puna” grasslands and Polylepis thickets to montane cloud forests all the way down towards the tropical lowland forests are known to harbour a rich biodiversity and high endemism of global significance. Despite its small size the property contributes to conserving a very rich habitat and species diversity with remarkable endemic and relict flora and fauna. whc.unesco.org/en/list/274
