Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire. Rebuilt by the Inca King Pachacuti some time in mid 1400's. It was considered the centre of the universe (the naval of the world). From it the early world was divided into 4 quadrants. The old city was shaped like a sitting puma, two rivers (now two main thoroughfares) were re-directed to form the tail and the fortress/temple Sacsahuaman formed the head.
We arrived on one of the last days of Corpus Christi. In Canada there may be a small procession after mass, but in Cusco it's taken to a whole new level. Heavy well decorated statues of patron saint of each church is taken from homes in Cusco to the top hill near the town on Trinity Sunday where they are blessed. Then they are brought down to the city in these grand processions where each statue is accompanied by their own band.
Close up of the silver (possibly solid by the heavy of the men/boys under it) base of the statues.
