There’s a little bit of mystery surrounding Judy Maxwell, a new Gold Coast store. “People always come in and they’re like, ‘What is this place?’ ” manager Elizabeth Black says.
It’s a valid question. It doesn’t look like a typical store. The shop’s handmade paper letter sign posted in the front window and a huge elephant statue that greets shoppers at the door don’t give you many immediate clues. Merch (there’s a wide variety, from artistic rocks made out of books to cheeky Jewish-themed board games) is displayed in such a clever way, it looks like an exhibition. “We call it a present gallery,” Black says. “Everything [in the store] falls under the umbrella of items that are fun, creative and useful.”
Who would open such a quirky store? That’s a bit of a mystery, too. The store’s owner prefers to stay anonymous, but she is well known and has even been nominated for a couple of Academy Awards. Here’s another hint: One of her favorite movies is What’s Up, Doc?, the 1972 movie where Barbra Streisand plays a kooky character named Judy Maxwell. (DVDs of the movie are sold in the shop.)

Press Release and photos – Boogie Band Launch of their CD “Frozen” in aid of the Cork Cancer Research Centre -
One of Munster’s sought after bands; The Boogie Band launched their CD “Frozen” in aid of the Cork Cancer Research Centre at Rearden’s Bar on Wednesday 6th April 2011,
Andy Dunne and The Boogie Band - Gary Canton on Drums, Keith Mulcahy on Guitar, Duncan Lutz on Bass, Eoghan Horgan on Keyboard and Adrian Richmond –Vocals entertained a crowded Reardans to a selection of songs from the CD, which included the song “Frozen” written exclusively for the Cork Cancer Research Centre.
Their idea to launch a CD, in memory of their close friend John Kissane from Killarney who died last year (2010) from cancer, John was the manager of The Grand, Killarney and he gave the band their first major gig, he was a huge supporter of the band right up to the very end of his life. So last night at Reardans all their hard work and effort in recording and producing the CD came to life.

About Cork Cancer Research Centre (CCRC)
The Cork Cancer Research Centre is an independent research centre focused on developing new treatments for secondary cancer. Key to centre’s success is the clear collaboration between surgeons and physicians in practice with speciality cancer researchers to apply their findings in practice. Its purpose is to provide discovery and innovations that may be applied to the prevention of the cancer in the first place or to the development of more effective treatment strategies. Our main focus is to find new treatments for patients who do not respond to conventional chemotherapy. In terms of our research activities, the Centre has brought five cancer treatments from the laboratory to clinical trial. More information about their work is available on www.ccrc.ie. Although we are living in challenging economic times, research must progress if we are to continue advancing new cancer treatments and positively impacting patient lives.
