Now I know how Howard Carter felt when he walked into King Tut's tomb and discovered one of the greatest archeological finds ever.
Here, in Galesburg,IL, this recently uncovered ghost signs for Henry George/Bull Durham cigars/tobacco shows magnificent detail, brilliant colors, and a peek into advertising not seen in probably 100 years. This sign was painted by a company based out of Chicago,IL (Thomas Cusack Signs) and their logo is partially visible in the lower left corner below the bearded gentleman.
Let's hope whoever owns the property will do what they can to preserve this classic sign.

I am familiar with Mount Jerome Cemetery as I lived beside its outer wall for two years (1981/82) and two of my grandparents are buried in there.
I cannot understand why my grandparents chose to be buried in Mount Jerome as it was, at the time, a depressing place relative to other locations that they could have chosen. In fact, as my grandfather was involved in the 1916 rising it is surprising that he was not buried in Glasnevin.
After my grandmother's funeral a very old uncle of mine described the graveyard as "an excellent advertisement for cremation" (back then Irish Catholics did not consider cremation an option). It is therefore somewhat ironic that as the result of the opening of a Crematorium in 2000 revenues have recovered and the Cemetery has undergone a complete reversal of fortune.
When I lived in the area the graves were often vandalised and at night a group of children would steal flowers from the graves in order to re-sell them the next day.
As Mount Jerome was established during the Victorian era, the monuments featured in some of my photographs are a materialistic expression of the success of the Victorian middle classes from that period.
Without doubt, Mount Jerome Cemetery the finest collections of Victorian memorials, tombs, vaults and crypts in Ireland.
Due to the declining burial numbers in the 1970's, the condition of the Cemetery began to deteriorate as revenues fell. In 1984 it was put into voluntary liquidation. By the late 1990's, it had fallen into a serious state of neglect with large swaths of the cemetery covered in overgrowth.

2012 is a 2012 American epic science fiction disaster film directed by Roland Emmerich and starring John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover and Woody Harrelson. The film was produced by Centropolis Entertainment and distributed by Columbia Pictures. 2012 was released internationally on December 20, 2012. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, praising its special effects and dark tone relative to Emmerich's other work and criticizing its screenplay and length. It was a commercial success and one of 2012's highest-grossing films.
Plot
In 2009, American geologist Adrian Helmsley visits astrophysicist Satnam Tsurutani in India and learns that neutrinos from a huge solar flare are heating Earth's core. Helmsley presents his information to White House Chief of Staff Carl Anheuser, who brings him to meet the president.
The following year, U.S. President Thomas Wilson and other world leaders begin a secret project to ensure the survival of humanity. China and the G8 nations begin building nine arks, each capable of carrying 100,000 people, in the Himalayas near Cho Ming, Tibet. Nima, a Buddhist monk, is evacuated and his brother Tenzin joins the ark project. Funding is raised by selling tickets at €1 billion per person. By 2011, articles of value are moved to the arks with the help of art expert and First Daughter Laura Wilson.
In 2012, struggling Los Angeles science-fiction writer Jackson Curtis is a chauffeur for Russian billionaire Yuri Karpov. Jackson's former wife (Kate) and their children (Noah and Lilly) live with Kate's boyfriend, plastic surgeon and pilot Gordon Silberman. Jackson takes Noah and Lilly camping in Yellowstone National Park. When they find an area fenced off by the Army, Jackson and his children climb over the fence. They are caught and brought to the geologist Adrian, who has read Jackson's books. After they are released they meet Charlie Frost, who hosts a radio show from the park.
That night, after the military evacuates Yellowstone, Jackson watches Charlie's video of Charles Hapgood's theory that polar shifts and the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar predict a 2012 phenomenon and the end of the world as we know it. According to Charlie, anyone who attempted to inform the public was killed. Soon after Jackson and his children return home, earthquakes begin in California; Jackson heeds Charlie's warning, and rents a private plane. He rescues his family as the Earth-crust displacement begins, causing a 10.9 magnitude earthquake, and Jackson and his family escape from Los Angeles by air as the city collapses and sinks into the Pacific Ocean.
They fly to Yellowstone to retrieve a map from Charlie with the arks' location. As they leave, the Yellowstone Caldera erupts; Charlie is killed when he stays behind to cover the eruption. The group lands in Las Vegas to find a larger plane and meet Yuri, his twin sons Alec and Oleg, his girlfriend Tamara and their pilot Sasha. Sasha and Gordon fly them out in an Antonov An-500 as the Yellowstone ash cloud envelops Las Vegas. Their plan was to land in Hawaii to refuel their plane, only to see the islands consumed by flows of lava as a result of the erupting volcanos.
Adrian, Carl, and Laura fly to the arks on Air Force One. Knowing that his daughter will survive, President Wilson remains in Washington, D.C. to address the nation for the last time while millions of people die in earthquakes and megatsunamis worldwide. With the presidential line of succession gone, Carl assumes the position of acting commander-in-chief.
When Jackson's group reaches China, their plane runs out of fuel. Sasha continues flying the plane as the others escape on a Bentley Continental Flying Spur stored in the cargo hold. Sasha is killed when the plane crashes, and the others are spotted by Chinese Air Force helicopters. Yuri and his sons (who have tickets) are brought to the arks and the Curtis family, Tamara and Gordon are left behind. The remaining group is picked up by Nima and brought to the arks with his grandparents. With Tenzin's help, they stow away on Ark 4, where the U.S. contingent is located. As a megatsunami breaches the Himalayas and approaches the site, an impact driver lodges in the ark-door gears. This keeps a boarding gate open, which prevents the ship's engines from starting. In the ensuing chaos, Yuri, Tamara, and Gordon are killed. Tenzin is injured, the ark begins filling with water and is set adrift. Jackson and Noah dislodge the tool and the crew regains control of the Ark before it strikes Mount Everest. Jackson is reunited with his family and reconciles with Kate.
Twenty-seven days later, the waters are receding. The arks approach the Cape of Good Hope, where the Drakensberg (now the tallest mountain range on Earth) is emerging. Adrian and Laura begin a relationship, and Jackson and Kate rekindle their romance.

McKeag became involved in 'C' Company of the lower Shankill - the most active unit of the UDA - around 1989, heading his own section of the company which was a hit squad (other sections concentrating on drug-dealing, money laundering and similar activities). According to Henry McDonald and Jim Cusack, the UDA gave an annual "Volunteer of the Year" award to the organisation's top hitman. The award, presented on the Shankill Road and usually consisting of a trophy in the form of a model gun and plaque made by loyalists prisoners, was dominated by McKeag from 1990 onwards and helped to ensure that he became known as "Top Gun" both to his UDA comrades and his republican opponents. In all, the RUC estimated that McKeag was responsible for at least 12 killings, although the figure was placed higher by a number of his former paramilitary associates.
One of McKeag's earliest attacks occurred on 11 March 1990 when he shot and killed Eamon Quinn outside his Kashmir Road home in the Clonard district of the Falls Road, beginning a long campaign of sectarian killings by the UDA. On 31 July he was behind a similar attack on the Springfield Road, where Catholic John Judge was killed after being shot five times by McKeag and his unit. This was followed on 16 October by the killing of Dermot McGuinness in Rosapena Street in north Belfast. Another victim was Seamus Sullivan, the son of former Belfast City Council member Jim Sullivan of the Workers' Party, killed on 4 September 1991 at the council depot on Springfield Avenue where he worked. Lawrence Murchan, a shopkeeper who was killed by McKeag and his unit on St James's Road on 28 September was the 2000th person to be killed during The Troubles. This was followed on 14 November by an attack on the Devenish Arms in Finaghy, resulting in the death of civil servant Aidan Wallace and wounding an 8 year old boy who lost an eye. Following his killing of Catholic shop worker Philomena Hanna at a chemists near the Springfield Road on 28 April 1992, eyewitnesses reported that as McKeag and his driver sped back to the Shankill via Lanark Way they shouted and sang his favourite song, 'Follow the Yellow Brick Road' from The Wizard of Oz. Other UDA members later confirmed that the Yellow Brick Road was McKeag's nickname for Lanark Way, a street linking the Shankill and Springfield roads and favoured by loyalist hitmen as an escape route from republican west Belfast. An attack on 14 November 1992, launched by McKeag, under the orders of Johnny Adair, on a branch of Sean Graham's bookmakers on the Oldpark Road left three Catholics dead and a number of others, including some Protestants who also frequented the betting shop, injured.

"2 East Taylor Street (also known as the Comer House) is a historic building in Savannah, Georgia, United States. It is located in the northwestern tything block of Monterey Square and was built in 1880. It is part of the Savannah Historic District. It was formerly the home of Hugh Moss Comer (1842–1900), president of the Central of Georgia Railway.
Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, was a guest at the house in 1886 with his daughter Varina Anne Davis. The exterior of the house appears in the Clint Eastwood-directed 1997 movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. John Cusack's character, John Kelso, is welcomed to town by the home's owner from one of its verandas. The gate in the fenced wall that Kelso walks through has since been removed.
Savannah (/səˈvænə/ sə-VAN-ə) is the oldest city in the U.S. state of Georgia and is the county seat of Chatham County. Established in 1733 on the Savannah River, the city of Savannah became the British colonial capital of the Province of Georgia and later the first state capital of Georgia. A strategic port city in the American Revolution and during the American Civil War, Savannah is today an industrial center and an important Atlantic seaport. It is Georgia's fifth-largest city, with a 2020 U.S. Census population of 147,780. The Savannah metropolitan area, Georgia's third-largest, had a 2020 population of 404,798.
Each year, Savannah attracts millions of visitors to its cobblestone streets, parks, and notable historic buildings. These buildings include the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low (founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA), the Georgia Historical Society (the oldest continually operating historical society in the South), the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences (one of the South's first public museums), the First African Baptist Church (one of the oldest African-American Baptist congregations in the United States), Temple Mickve Israel (the third-oldest synagogue in the U.S.), and the Central of Georgia Railway roundhouse complex (the oldest standing antebellum rail facility in the U.S.).
Savannah's downtown area, which includes the Savannah Historic District, its 22 parklike squares, and the Savannah Victorian Historic District, is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States (designated by the U.S. government in 1966). Downtown Savannah largely retains the original town plan prescribed by founder James Oglethorpe (a design now known as the Oglethorpe Plan). During the 1996 Summer Olympics hosted by Atlanta, Savannah held sailing competitions in the nearby Wassaw Sound." - info from Wikipedia.
The fall of 2022 I did my 3rd major cycling tour. I began my adventure in Montreal, Canada and finished in Savannah, GA. This tour took me through the oldest parts of Quebec and the 13 original US states. During this adventure I cycled 7,126 km over the course of 2.5 months and took more than 68,000 photos. As with my previous tours, a major focus was to photograph historic architecture.
Now on Instagram.

My apologies for the delay, but I have been very busy writing a new Constitution for the United Arab Emirates that I had been commissioned to do by George Carlin. Anyway, that’s another story for another day, let’s get down to business.
Ivan Cusack is the father of the actors John and Joan Cusack. He was never the best father, and he would be the first to admit as such, but he did try his best, given his rather unorthodox upbringing. He was raised on a farm by a deranged 80 year old gentleman who had escaped a mental institution and kidnapped Ivan from a local orphanage. He forced Ivan to eat spiders while doing jumping jacks every day for breakfast. He put him on a rocking horse and pushed him down a ski slope in Colorado. He forced Ivan to brush his teeth using molten metal. He made Ivan serve roast beef to a tornado. After Ivan turned 17, he decided to strangle his father with a piano wire, and that was that.
Today, Ivan lives in a house that was bought for him by his son John. Ivan however is never quite satisfied. He calls John every day and screams at him about the cold water in the bath tub. At least once a week he convinces John to come down to his house to “fix” his bath tub by turning on the hot water, a procedure that Ivan has yet to understand.
Right now Ivan is locked in a complicated legal proceeding with his daughter Joan, who he thinks should exit show business due to her failure to match up to the success of her brother. He insists that she become a professional synchronized swimming instructor so that she may one day perform with a team of unicorns in front of the President of Nicaragua.

If you were a teenage girl in the 80's, there are some things you'll never forget. Like big hair, New Kids on the Block, and John Cusack holding the boombox over his head in 'Say Anything.' But unlike a lot of teen heart-throbs, John didn't fade away. He became one of the most respected - and eclectic - actors of his generation. He's played everything from an American air marshal in 'Con Air' to an eccentric puppeteer inside John Malkovich's head in 'Being John Malkovich' and a hit man going to his high school reunion in 'Grosse Pointe Blank.' That movie was the first from John's own New Crime Productions. He also produced and co-wrote the screenplay for the cult classic, 'High Fidelity.' Ditto for his latest flick, 'War Inc.' It's about an American corporation run by the former U-S vice president, that occupies an imaginary country called Turaqistan.

I got these at my work a few years back and thought they were so cool....the thing is that I'm really trying to purge my stuff and this is one of those items that I don't have any attachment to, other than thinking it is really cool. I saw the movie, but it didn't stick with me in a way that I am it's biggest fan, though it was enjoyable.
Anyway, maybe I should put it up on ebay. I hate just giving it away to goodwill. Anyone interested??
So I got this $5 change from a store and it had this paw print on. I saw this and instantly thought of one of my favorite movies of all time: Serendipity!!
( If you haven't seen it, you must go watch it!! )
It reminded me of Serendipity because in the movie Sarah (Kate Beckinsale) takes a $5 bill and tells Jonathan (John Cusack) to write his name and phone number on it. He writes it, she then takes the bill and some mints with it. When Jonathan asks her why did she do that she says "When that $5 bill makes it's way back into my hands I'll be able to call you and when you hear my voice on the other end, then you'll believe in fait, won't you"
Gah love it!!

On quite a windy afternoon both sides evenly traded two tries and a penalty kick with the lead changing hands a number of times. Willie Staunton, who was my man of the match, landed a pair of drop goals which was the difference between them in the end. He controlled procedings and took his scoring chances with the confidance of a 10 in the groove. Final score 21 - 15 on Sat. 18th February , keeping the Cookies well up there with the best of them , with five left to play.
