The Curta calculator is a wonderful historical curiosity. It was a hand-operated mechanical calculator that was driven by the rotation of the crank at the top of the device. Among its early adopters were rally drivers who needed to calculate target times to checkpoints. An experienced operator could operate the device without taking their eyes off the road. The Curta calculator would have been the invention that displaced the slide calculator, if it had not had the misfortune of being developed just prior to the advent of the age of the transistor.

전기 계산기가 등장한 뒤로도 한참동안 사용된 휴대용 기계식 계산기. 지금도 덕후들이 많고 인터넷에도 매커니즘을 설명한 짤방들이 굴러다닌다.
기계식 계산기의 역사에서 처음으로 하나의 톱니바퀴가 하나의 숫자(0~9)를 나타내게 된 것은 라이프니츠가 1672년 개발한 Step Reckoner 부터다. 이 방식은 이후 2세기동안 사용되었는데, Curta도 예외는 아니었다.
600여 개 이상의 부품으로 이루어진 Curta는 제조를 위해 특수한 공구가 필요했고, 분해를 해 놓고서도 재조립을 못 하는 게 흔할 정도로 복잡했다. 이 기계의 발명자인 Curt Herzstark는 1943년 부헨발트 강제 수용소로 끌려간 뒤에도 개선 작업을 했다. 전쟁이 끝난 뒤, Curta는 세계에서 가장 작은 완전 기계식 사칙연산 계산기로 불렸다. 전자식 컴퓨터가 등장한 70년대까지도 현역으로 쓰였다.

The hand-cranked Curta was popular with sports car rallysts even after electronic calculators were available. The exquisite mechanism is still studied.
In the history of mechanical calculation machines, Gottfried Leibniz's Step Reckoner (1672) Introduced a design innovation that enabled a single gear to represent any digit from 0 to 9 in just one revolution. This stepped-drum approach dominated calculator design for the next two centuries, including Curta.
Curta, has more than 600 parts, required special tools to build them. Since it was so sophisticated, lots of owners tried to disassemble them but failed to reassemble. While imprisoned in Buchenwald concentration camp in World War II, Curt Herzstark refined his pre-war design of a calculator featuring a modified version of Leibniz's stepped drum. After the war, Herzstark's Curta made history as the smallest all-mechanical, four function calculator ever built. It was used until the end of the 70s, alongside with the electronic computers.

Pearl-spotted owlet
The pearl-spotted owlet (Glaucidium perlatum) is an owl that breeds in Sub-Saharan Africa. This species is a part of the larger grouping of owls known as typical owls, Strigidae, which contains most species of owl. The other grouping is the barn owls, Tytonidae.
The pearl-spotted owlet is small (about 19 cm (7.5 in)) and stocky, with a longish tail. The upperparts are rich brown, heavily spotted with white and showing a white shoulder bar. The underparts are white, streaked with brown. The facial disc is white and the eyes are yellow, it has been said to have a "cross" expression. There are two eyespots on the nape. Sexes are similar, but young birds are paler with a shorter tail and may have more prominent eye spots on the nape. The flight is deeply undulating

Mocho-Perlado
A coruja manchada de pérola (Glaucidium perlatum) ou mocho-perlado é uma coruja que se reproduz na África Subsaariana. Esta espécie faz parte do grupo maior de corujas conhecido como corujas típicas, Strigidae, que contém a maioria das espécies de corujas. O outro agrupamento são as corujas, Tytonidae. O filhote de coruja é pequeno (cerca de 19 cm) e atarracado, com cauda longa. As partes superiores são marrons ricas, fortemente manchadas de branco e mostrando uma barra de ombro branca. As partes inferiores são brancas, com listras marrons. O disco facial é branco e os olhos são amarelos, diz-se que possui uma expressão "cruzada". Existem duas manchas na nuca. Os sexos são semelhantes, mas os pássaros jovens são mais pálidos com uma cauda mais curta e podem ter manchas nos olhos mais proeminentes na nuca. O vôo é profundamente ondulado.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a large wildlife preserve and conservation area in southern Africa. The park straddles the border between South Africa and Botswana and comprises two adjoining national parks:
•Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa
•Gemsbok National Park in Botswana
The total area of the park is 38,000 square kilometres (15,000 sq mi). Approximately three-quarters of the park lies in Botswana and one-quarter in South Africa. Kgalagadi means "place of thirst." [1] In September 2014, more than half of the Botswana portion of the park was sold for gas-fracking
The park is located largely within the southern Kalahari Desert. The terrain consists of red sand dunes, sparse vegetation, occasional trees, and the dry riverbeds of the Nossob and Auob Rivers. The rivers are said to flow only about once per century. However, water flows underground and provides life for grass and camelthorn trees growing in the river beds. The rivers may flow briefly after large thunderstorms

Parque Transfronteiriço do Kgalagadi
O Parque Transfronteiriço de Kgalagadi é uma grande área de preservação e conservação da vida selvagem no sul da África. O parque fica na fronteira entre a África do Sul e o Botsuana e compreende dois parques nacionais adjacentes:
• Parque Nacional Kalahari Gemsbok na África do Sul
• Parque Nacional Gemsbok no Botsuana
A área total do parque é de 38.000 quilômetros quadrados (15.000 milhas quadradas). Aproximadamente três quartos do parque ficam no Botsuana e um quarto na África do Sul. Kgalagadi significa "lugar de sede". Em setembro de 2014, mais da metade da parte do parque em Botsuana foi vendida por fracking a gás
O parque está localizado em grande parte no sul do deserto de Kalahari. O terreno consiste em dunas de areia vermelha, vegetação escassa, árvores ocasionais e leitos secos dos rios Nossob e Auob. Diz-se que os rios fluem apenas uma vez por século. No entanto, a água flui no subsolo e fornece vida para as árvores que crescem nos leitos dos rios. Os rios podem fluir brevemente após grandes tempestades

Kalahari Desert
The Kalahari Desert is a large semi-arid sandy savanna in Southern Africa extending for 900,000 square kilometres (350,000 sq mi), covering much of Botswana, parts of Namibia and regions of South Africa.
It is not to be confused with the Angolan, Namibian and South African Namib coastal desert, whose name is of Khoekhoegowab origin and means "vast place"
Kalahari is derived from the Tswana word Kgala, meaning "the great thirst", or Kgalagadi, meaning "a waterless place"; the Kalahari has vast areas covered by red sand without any permanent surface water

Deserto do Kalahari
O Kalahari, Calaari ou Calaári é um deserto localizado na África Austral, com cerca de 900.000 km² abrangendo partes de Angola, do Botswana, Namíbia e África do Sul.
O nome é derivado de uma palavra em tsuana[2] e significa "a grande sede"
Derivada da palavra Kgalagadi, significa o lugar da a grande sede (kgala - sede; gadi - lugar). A formação do deserto é devida, principalmente, a corrente marítima fria de Benguela[carece de fontes], que atua na costa sudoeste da África, condensando o vapor de água que vai em direção ao continente, fazendo com que as massas de ar cheguem mais secas ao mesmo. O Kalahari possui vasta área coberta por areia avermelhada sem afloramento de água em caráter permanente. Porém Kalahari não é um deserto verdadeiro. Partes dele recebem mais de 250 mm de chuva mal distribuída anualmente e possuem bastante vegetação. É realmente árido somente no sudoeste (menos de 175 mm de chuva ao ano), fazendo do Kalahari um deserto de fósseis. As temperaturas no verão do Kalahari vão de 20 a 40°C. No inverno, o Kalahari tem um clima seco e frio com geada à noite. As baixas temperaturas do inverno podem ficar abaixo de 0°C. O clima no verão em algumas regiões do Kalahari pode alcançar 50°C (por isso algumas tribos bosquimanas se recolhem nos momentos mais quentes do dia).
