On our second visit to the Booth, we saw two current exhibitions. One featured the recent acquisitions from the last two years and the other was a room full of huge, distinctive portraits by Bulgarian born Ross Rossin from his recent tour of the American West.
The world’s largest permanent exhibition space for Western art is in Cartersville, Georgia at the Booth Western Art Museum.
Open since 2003 and located just north of Atlanta along I-75, the Booth is the largest museum of its kind in the Southeast and an Affiliate to the Smithsonian Institution. At 120,000 square feet, the Booth is an architectural wonder – designed to resemble a modern pueblo and constructed from Bulgarian limestone. The Booth’s permanent collection of Western art, Presidential portraits and letters, and Civil War art allows visitors to “See America’s Story” – the land, people, struggles, dreams, and legends – in paintings, sculpture, photography and artifacts. Sagebrush Ranch is an award-winning, hands-on experience and interactive children’s gallery.
Western art in Georgia, specifically Cartersville? Booth Museum was started by a family who call Cartersville home and have been Western art collectors for many years. It was their wish to share their art with the community, particularly young people who might not otherwise be exposed to art. The Museum was named for Sam Booth, a good friend and mentor to the founders of the Museum. Booth Western Art Museum is operated under the umbrella of Georgia Museums, Inc., which also includes Tellus Science Museum, Bartow History Museum and, coming soon, Savoy Automobile Museum.
Since opening, more than 3/4 million people have visited the Booth. As the buzz surrounding the Booth continues to grow, so does the Museum’s accolades, including being named the 2016 Escape to the Southeast Travel Attraction of the Year by the Southeast Tourism Society, 2016 Reader’s Choice “Best Western Museum” in America by True West Magazine, listed among “The South’s Best Museums” by Southern Living, top 10 ranking in “30 Must-See Art Museums In The U.S.” by thecareerartproject.com, and one of “5 U.S. Art Museums to Add to Your Bucket List” by thedailyquirk.com.
The Booth’s permanent collection covers more than a dozen galleries, showcasing legendary artists such as Frederic Remington and Charles Russell to contemporary masters Howard Terpning and Andy Warhol. Unique to the Booth, the Millar Presidential Gallery displays a portrait and original hand-signed letter from each U.S. President, George Washington through Donald Trump. Supplementing the permanent collection are several temporary galleries, hosting 10 to 12 exhibitions per year.
In addition to “Seeing America’s Story” in our galleries, visitors can experience American heritage through several annual events, plus lectures, programing, and exhibition openings. Each February the For the Love of Art Gala Weekend features live and silent art auctions generating funds needed to help support the Museum’s mission. Every March the Southeastern Cowboy Gathering features traditional Cowboy food, music and poetry. October brings the Southeastern Cowboy Festival & Symposium with Native American dancing, gun fight reenactments, art history lectures, a Western marketplace and much more. The museum also welcomes visiting artists and scholars to speak at twice monthly lectures and exhibition openings throughout the year.

Currently their hair is off at the spa LOL. Odettes' is being degreased (AGAIN). Winifreds' cute little buns suffered an accident and I gave in to the inevitable and unwound the buns :(. We'll see how it looks once it's dry. It's still in ponytails, which seem to be a bit curly.
The blue mohair wig Odette was wearing also left a mark on her little head :(

The Palácio de São Lourenço is a Palace and Fortress located in the parish of Sé, in the historic center of the city of Funchal, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, and is currently the official residence of the Representative of the Republic in that archipelago. It is a monumental ensemble originally with the dual function of Palace and Fortification, considered the best and most imposing example of Civil and Military architecture on the island of Madeira. It comprises the São Lourenço Fortress, which began in the first half of the 16th century and completed at the time of the Philippine Dynasty, and the Palace itself, including the halls on the main floor dating from the last quarter of the 18th century and the interior gardens.
Following the sack of Funchal in 1566, the new master of the Royal Works in Madeira, Mateus Fernandes III, carried out the expansion of the old bastion. A plan of Funchal (Mateus Fernandes, c. 1570) shows the Fortress, inside which the Captain's Houses were located, defended by a rectangular wall, to the Southeast of which stood the Manueline Turret and, to the Northwest, another turret next to which the French Corsairs would have entered, in 1566.
In 1572 the defensive design was modified, being increased to three bastions. It was also decided to demolish the houses that were an impediment to it, and to cut the balconies on the front of the Calhau, where the city walls were to be built torn by five doors, two to the south facing the sea, one to the east. and two to the west, running along the walls between the João Gomes and São Francisco streams (currently the São João stream) intersecting the Pena and Pico dos Frias Hills. It is believed that around 1580 the southwest bastion, quadrangular, would be completed, as well as two pentagonal bastions to the north, in a dominant position, covering the city, the Fort is described as follows, at the time:
'' Ahead of the Customs a crossbow shot is the old Fortress, which is the main one, situated on a rock, and has six large and beautiful water pipes on the side of the sea that come out of it, and in it rises in the same rock on which it is founded, and in no way can it be taken or hindered by the side of the land of any enemies, which fortress has two towers on the side of the sea, like towers, very strong, that guard the same sea, and artillery, of which are well provided for, and on the other side of the land two others, which guard the whole city from above, because they are higher than it, in which part there is also a very high and strong wall, with a very strong gate or trapdoor. And, just as it has water in it, it has no shortage of mills, ovens and barns to collect supplies, and rich rooms, where the captain lands, adorned with its garden and freshness''. (Gaspar Frutuoso. Saudades da Terra).
From the 20th century to the present day:
With the proclamation of the Republic in Portugal (October 5th, 1910) the ensemble went into progressive decline, which lasted until the end of the 1930's. In 1931, in the context of the so-called Madeira Revolt, the Revolutionary Junta constituted on the 4th April, headed by General Sousa Dias, settled in the São Lourenço Palace, which then also served as a prison, until the transfer to Lazareto, the 27th April, from the representatives of the Dictatorship, Silva Leal, High Commissioner of the Government sent to Madeira following the February incidents, Almeida Cabaço, the Civil Governor, and José Maria de Freitas, Military Governor. As the headquarters of the Revolutionary Junta, it was in the Palace that the defence of the island against the forces sent by the Government was organized, until the surrender on 1st May. In the period between 1938 and 1941, there was a new campaign of works in the Palácio-Fortaleza, under the management of Governor José Nosolini Pinto Leão, reflecting the concept of monumentality underlying the cultural and patrimonial policy of the Estado Novo, with the resources of a extraordinary subsidy granted to him by the Government through Decree-Law No.29,742, of July 12th 1939.
At the time, the interior areas of the palace, the front gardens, certain curtains and defensive turrets were the object of preservation and improvement works, with the appearance of the south facade of the building having been unified and its dependencies being destined to house the Military Leaders of the Wood. Classified as a National Monument by Decree No.32973 of August 18th 1943. Since the institution of the autonomous system in 1976, the Palace sector has been used as the official residence of the Minister of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of Madeira. At the end of the 1990's, the monument was the object of archaeological research, on the initiative of the Minister of the Republic.
