Repeated tire rutting and tracking across a curbed landscape bed is a sign that trucks have trouble maneuvering and turning in this parking lot. This photo shows damage during wet conditions in April 2014.

On a cool day the warmth of the steaming asphalt offers a pleasant, if smelly, moderating effect on the ambient air temperature. In summertime the radiant heat is less welcome, by contrast.

Rolling the smooth paved sections helps to join each 12 to 14 foot lane to the one next to it in order to form a whole. So the steamrollers work around and near the paver to do their work while the surface is still at its highest temperature. The tandem pavers quickly fill the prepared roadbed with their asphalt layers.

The big wagon brings 41 tons of heated blacktop directly to the paving machine so that the first layer of street surface can be laid without seam or break from the work up to this spot. Later the finishing surface will join the first layer to create a durable surface for all seasons. Much of the material in the hot mix is recycled from older street surfaces that have been removed elsewhere. The broken pieces are ground into a uniform aggregate and then added the the petroleum-based black binder; see, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asphalt

The driver dictates starting and stopping, paving and reloading, as well as overall positioning and pace of the paving work. The high position of the seat on top gives a good overview. Then an assistant on each corner flank can fine-tune the width of the paving run. The operator on the far side joins this run to the section of street that was paved to begin with. The operator on the near corner makes sure the asphalt fills the gap into the cement gutter.

Early on the morning of the paving operation everything is in place: machinery, supervision, workers able to do the diverse tasks required along the way, and the required volume of asphalt to be mixed up, heated, and delivered on time to the waiting pair of paving machines. This photo gives a close-up view of the compacted subsurface of the street after all underground repairs and maintenance to the water service is done.

At the peak of the paving operation both machines were in motion, closely followed by two or all three of the on site steamrollers. Trucks delivering asphalt were timed to arrive with minimal wait time as one truck emptied, the next was ready to step into its place, and a third one was arriving to carry the relay onward. The size, expense, and finely tuned coordination of all these moving parts is impressive to watch.

In the foreground there is a gritty layer of excess asphalt showered on top of the paving machine's first layer of asphalt. When the steamroller is done the surface will be perfectly smooth and ready to receive the final layer of asphalt to bring the finished street surface up to the level of the cement gutter.

The thin tar-like spray completely covers the cut edge of the old street surface to that the hot asphalt will fuse with the solution and bind with the old asphalt, thus keeping water for gathering and turning to ice in the cold weather, thus expanding and bursting the street material.

Corner piece shown here are difficult to fill by machine alone. Instead the driver dumps a quantity of the heavy black material so that the workers with rakes can distribute it evenly. That way the steamroller can move from one end of the fresh pavement to the other in uninterrupted motion, compacting the unbroken street surface.
