As I said before, on this trip I had a specific goal of photographing Katmai mama bears and their cubs. This has got to be one of the most precious illustrations of the close relationship that they have together.
Cubs are generally born in January/February while the mama is generally sleeping (I wanna be a brown bear in my next life)! They are generally a mere 1# at birth and are blind and helpless. They feed on their mother's milk and quickly gain weight. Some time around April or May they are big enough (~20#) to leave the den and make regular "outings" with their mom. On the average, sows have 2 cubs, though they can have between 1-4. The cubs tag along with mom for about 2-3 yrs, sometimes 4 yrs.
Mama bears have a reputation for being wonderful caring moms to their cubs and will do what they need to do to protect them. Though she may give them some leeway in their range as they grow up with her, she still has them close by. The cubs seem to understand that while they "spread their wings" and test independence, they clearly still need their moms.
This pair actually includes another cub sibbling that is out of the camera view and mom is probably watching it at this very moment of the shot. She has just gotten done allowing the cubs to feed off her. The one cub, just like a baby, wanted to cuddle up to her, while the other probably still had energy to burn off.
This shot was taken where we were earlier standing, but as the water was advancing, we retreated to give the area back to the bears. We were actually now standing a bit elevated from them, though at close range (this shot is not cropped).
Look at the size of those claws! It never ceases to amaze me, where I often find myself simply trying to get a great shot of them, irregardless of the body of the bear itself.
I absolutely love this shot for the look of content, comfort, and peace on the little one's face and in it's body language. The day was cool, the waters were cold, but the rocks warmed from the sun were the perfect place to take a much needed break in the action.
Hope that you're enjoying the Katmai bears as much as I do. I encourage everyone to put this place on their "short list" of places to visit and photograph. It changed me as a person and will live long in my heart and soul. Thanks for all of your comments.

Unidentified Millipedes- Malua Forest Reserve, Malaysia
I went out one afternoon after work in search of something to photograph, a little while later I peeked into a tree hole a little above eye level and this is what I saw: 2 millipedes sharing an intimate moment. The most interesting thing I came across that afternoon.
Giving her best pose this is Cuddles the golden eagle. 9 lbs of pure apex predator. Even through the viewfinder I couldn't help but feel I was being sized up as a potential meal.
Taken in a very dark barn on a falconry experience day and posted by request of Sophia.
