I went to test my new Radio poppers from eBay found the didn't work on my Vivitar 285HV with half used batteries, changed the batteries and it works.
But to make it work with your flash batteries until their near dead you need to improve connection from the negative terminal to the hot shoe. As can be seen here the wires to the shoe are tiny.
This was done by placing a small length of wire between the points, you should solder in place. I just wrapped it around the black wire on the shoe and place it behind the battery plate but in front of plastic so held in by tension even if battery not present.
The same batteries that did not work in the flash on the trigger now function fine.
