A shot tower is designed for the production of small diameter lead shot. Lead is heated until molten, then dropped through a copper sieve high in the tower. The liquid lead forms tiny spherical balls by surface tension, and solidifies as it falls. The partially cooled balls are caught at the floor of the tower in a water-filled basin.

Constantin Brancusi, a native of Targu Jiu, was commissioned by the National League of Gorj Women to honor soldiers who had defended Târgu Jiu in 1916 from the forces of the Central Powers. The memorial monument complex was finished in 1938. Constantin Brâncuși (1876–1957) was at the time living in Paris, but welcomed the opportunity to create a large commemorative sculpture in his homeland. He accepted the commission in 1935, and refused to receive payment for it. Today, these large sculptures of the memorial complex, The Table of Silence, The Gate of the Kiss, The Alley of Chairs along with The Endless Column are main touristic attractions in Targu Jiu, Romania.
The sculpture is 6.45 m wide, 5.13 m high and 1.69 m thick and is built as a triumphal arch symbolizing the the triumph of life over death.

"Directly across from the Courthouse is "the Castle", an 1896 mixture of Richardsonian Romanesque, Eastlake Victorian, and fantasy architecture dominated by three turreted towers and strong limestone arches over brick. The home was built by Rep. James Robert ("Dollar Bob") Williams, who oversaw the construction of the Courthouse while serving as County Judge from 1882-1886. He served several terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, and spoke for his friend William Jennings Bryan in his presidential campaigns. Bryan and Harry Truman both made whistle-stop visits to Carmi during their presidential campaigns, in 1896 and 1948, respectively. Williams had the house designed by Knoxville, Tennessee architect George Franklin Barber, who sold plans by mail and had pre-cut woodwork shipped to wealthy homeowners in Washington, California and Texas.
The home was almost destroyed in the 1980's, but local preservationists had the home placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and helped find buyers for the property."
