On Monday, the band visited Toledo, a former capital of Spain under various rulers, including the Romans, Visigoths, and Moors. The UNESCO World Heritage site showcases a blend of Gothic, Mudéjar, and Renaissance architectural styles. Even with the early rain and fog, the Mirador del Valle had breathtaking views of the city and the Tagus River (Iberian Peninsula’s longest river). Our wonderful guide Fernando led us through a maze of very narrow, cobbled streets to the 13th century Gothic cathedral. The city is known for Manchego cheese and marzipan, which is delightful! Toledo is a fixture in the works of Miguel de Cervantes, who wrote Don Quixote at the beginning of the 17th century. Then we boarded the bus and left central Spain for Granada.

On Sunday, the Wind Symphony took a day trip through the snowy Sierra de Guadarrama mountains to Segovia, where history, culture, and beauty converge. The day began at the Roman Aqueduct, an engineering marvel that has stood for more than 2,000 years. A tour guide led the group through cobbled streets and picturesque squares to the Alcázar of Segovia. The fairy-tale castle’s sweeping views, medieval towers, and multiple turrets inspired Disney’s Snow White castle. Many in the group sampled the region’s famous and flavorful cochinillo (roast suckling pig). It was a merry day in the heart of Spain!

The iconic Alhambra in Granada, Spain, transported the members of the CSU Wind Symphony into a world of intricate history and stunning Islamic architecture. Built between 1238 and 1353, the Alhambra was a majestic royal palace and fortress for the Nasrid dynasty. The Court of the Lions and the iconic Hall of the Ambassadors captivated us with its intricate stucco, vibrant tiles, and delicate arches. The peaceful courtyards, lush gardens, and breathtaking views from its plateau location were equally impressive. In 1492, the Catholic Monarchs took control of the city and the Alhambra, and in the following century, King Charles V added his own flair to it. In 1812, Napoleon’s troops destroyed portions, and the complex became the home of travelers, marginalized people, and local authorities. In 1832, American author Washington Irving published “Tales of the Alhambra,” a series of stories about its inhabitants and myths. The book influenced the renovation of the deteriorating palace. Thank you to our guide, Bea, for your deep knowledge and passion for the Alhambra. We will not forget to close our eyes, take a deep breath, and reflect.
