Chinese name: 长丰猎豹CS7 (chángfēng lièbào CS7)

Year of launch: 2008

At the 2005 Shanghai Motor Show Changfeng Motor launched the Liebao (Cheetah/Leopard) C1 concept car. Early 2008 Changfeng launched the production version at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit as the Liebao CS7. It probably shares its platform with the Changfeng Liebao Feiteng, which is none other than a locally produced Mitsubishi Pajero iO/Pinin. Sales of the CS7 were poor. Since GAC acquired Changfeng sales went through the roof thanks to the new CS10. Liebao was promoted to the brand's name, and Changfeng chose Leopaard as its English translation, which sounds like a blend of the English word leopard and the Dutch translation of it, luipaard.

Blackbird on a Windowsill.

A painting in gouache on CS10 illustration board.

Someone brought me a male blackbird which had been injured by a car and I photographed it on a windowsill in my flat in Priory Street, Carmarthen, South Wales, before releasing it outside. I don't think the bird survived.

I was a 20 year old art student at Dyfed College of Art at the time and the finished painting in gouache (opaque watercolour) formed part of my final diploma show and is heavily influenced by the realist works of American painter Andrew Wyeth and the New Zealand bird painter Raymond Harris Ching. No white paint was used in this painting, all the light areas are the white of the smooth hot-pressed board showing through the light layers of paint.

The painting measures 12 x 14 ins.

A Leopaard CS10 photographed at a Leopaard dealership in Zhengzhou, Henan province, China.

Leopaard, formely known as Changfeng Liebao, is a Chinese car maker based in Changsha (Hunan).

The brand was (and still is) closely linked with the PLA (People's Liberation Army, the Chinese army) and specialized in 4x4 and pick-ups production.

From 1995 to 2011, Changfeng Liebao had a JV with Mitsubishi to produce the Pajero iO (aka Pajero Pinin), 2nd and 3rd gen Pajero, and sell it under Mitsubishi and Changfeng Liebao brands.

The current Leopaard brand still produces the 2nd gen Pajero, sold as Leopaard Q6.

Since 2012, the brand belongs to GAC group.

This CS10 is a new SUV launched in April 2015.

Thanks to it, Leopaard's sales doubled in 2015 and in 2016, 88% of new Leopaard are CS10.

2.0 Turbo gas engine is sourced from Mitsubishi.

It costs from 96.800 to 125.800 RMB (around €13.100-17.100 or US $14.500-18.900).

In my opinion, it is the best looking Chinese SUV on the market.

NWA5000 was much larger than any brought back by Apollo. It was ejected from the moon by an asteroid strike ~2000 years ago, and after hurtling through space and around the sun for over 1.3 thousand years, landed in the Western Sahara desert to be discovered in 2007.

Only 0.1% of meteorites are from the moon, making them more rare than pure diamond on Earth. With this unique slice of heaven at work now, I am, needless to say, over the moon!

The matrix looks like a black and white intaglio print of the universe rendered by a spirited yet masterful artist. This stone contains breccias within breccias, and the preferential orientation of clasts (from impact compression) lends a unique 3D appearance to flat surfaces. A generous amount of 4.5-billion year old gleaming metal is present, adding yet another striking element to nature’s artwork.

We know from remote observation and the Luna/Apollo missions that there are two main classes of rocks from the Moon. The first type is referred to as "mare" (meaning "sea"), pertaining to the darker areas of the Moon mainly composed of ancient (3.0 to 3.8 billion year old) basalt lava flows. The second type referred to as "highlands" pertains to the lighter colored areas of the Moon mainly composed of feldspar-rich anorthosite rocks. NWA 5000 is a unique highlands- monomict gabbroic breccia (meaning a type of rock mainly made of related fragments of gabbro). The Moon is believed to be about 4.5 billion years old and for about 600 million years during its early history was bombarded by pieces left over from formation of the planets. Impactors continued to strike the Moon at a decreasing rate, creating the heavily cratered surface of the lunar crust. During this time, melting of the deeper lunar mantle produced fluid basalt magma that erupted into the larger impact basins producing the dark areas of the the lunar surface ("maria"). Knowing this history of the Moon, we can infer that NWA 5000 is very ancient, and much older than most known Earth rocks.

The next period of NWA 5000’s existence was relatively quiet until a massive impact event occurring around 3.2 billion years ago created a giant melt sheet of a type of rock referred to as gabbro. The impacting body left exotic material in this Lunaite, solving the mystery of why there is metal embedded in the gabbro clasts, (something that was never observed before NWA 5000 was studied.) Another asteroid impact around 600 million years ago was mostly responsible for producing its distinctive brecciated matrix as well as bringing this rock to the surface of the Moon. This is where it was exposed to the solar wind, which implanted hydrogen-rich gas bubbles into the matrix. Then another impact event ejected this rock from the Moon and created the cross-cutting, thin glass veins. According to ongoing studies, this happened around two thousand years ago.

DESCRIPTION **Glossary below.

opercular aperture (top opening)

Approximately broadly oval Cs1[flic.kr/p/bXnEBf], but often with tendency to flat sections of perimeter; some may approach kite-shape Cs2[flic.kr/p/bXnEHY] of C. montagui

Four valves, two terga and two scuta, open along longitudinal midline with a tergum and scutum each side Cs3[flic.kr/p/bXnEPE]. Whether closed or open, valves usually just below, or level with, rim of aperture, and each tergum fixed to its scutum (sometimes even after treatment with bleach) Cs4[flic.kr/p/bXnESy]). Terga fill a third or more of aperture. A few growth lines may be seen on the rostral end of the scuta Cs3[flic.kr/p/bXnEPE].

ECOLOGY

Stenohaline, full salinity. Commonest MTL to MLWS, some up to HW, not sublittoral. On rock and live limpets Cs13[flic.kr/p/bXnFPY] exposed to strong and very strong wave action, where it is may be the dominant littoral barnacle. Usually overlaps with shore zones of Balanus semibalanoides and Chthamalus montagui. In Britain, breeds April to September, cyprids settle July to December.

Masses of Chthamalus near high water mark on shores exposed to strong waves are a favoured habitat of the isopod Campocea hirsuta and juveniles of the gastropod Melarhaphe neritoides Cs2[flic.kr/p/bXnEHY].

DISTRIBUTION

N.E. Atlantic coasts from Shetland to Azores, Canaries and N.W. Africa, and into Mediterranean and Black seas. See GBIF map www.gbif.org/species/2115620

British coasts westwards from Isle of Wight to Scilly and thence north to Shetland. Most Irish coasts, except Larne to Dublin. Southward (2008) wrote, “It straggles down the east coast of Scotland in small numbers, mostly in cryptic situations [deep cracks in rock], as far as Stonehaven. - - It is missing from the north Wales coast east of Holyhead, and from Lancashire, Cumbria, the Galloway peninsula and the Clyde Sea”. Records of it on NBN from these areas of reported absence require evidence of the tergoscutal flap for substantiation as the shell and aperture can overlap in appearance with that of C. montagui which is often mistaken for it. Those in situations of low wave action are especially suspect . See NBN map at species.nbnatlas.org/species/NBNSYS0000174548

HWS- level of high water spring tide.

lateral plates - wall plates other than end plates (depending on sp., strictly may be rostro-lateral or carino-lateral).

LWN- level of low water neap tide.

micropyle – small breathing/sensing hole between tergoscutal flaps, sometimes visible when operculum shut. Found on spp. that are left out of water for long periods.

MLWS- level of mean low water spring tide.

MTL – mid-tide level.

opercular – (adj.) of the operculum (aperture lid).

operculum – moveable lid-like structure used to close the aperture.

paries – ( pl. parietes) central section of wall plate, flanked by alae and radii.

ppt – parts per thousand (of salt in water).

radius – (pl. radii) side flange of wall plate, overlaps ala of adjacent plate.

right – on right when barnacle viewed from above with rostrum at 12 o’clock.

rostral - (adj.) of the rostrum.

rostrum - anterior wall plate adjoining larger pair of lid plates (scuta). (Lost on Elminius and balanoids; place taken by fused rostro-laterals; referred to as rostrum for simplicity.)

scuta – (sing. scutum) the larger plates of the operculum (lid).

sessile – (adj.) permanently attached to substrate (of immobile organism).

stenohaline – unable to tolerate much variation in salinity.

terga – (sing. tergum) the smaller plates of the operculum (lid).

tergoscutal flaps - membranous “lid seals", (most visible as valves start to open).
