The Fred Olsen Lines' Balmoral cruise ship. A remarkable name for a modernist vessel and a rare Rotterdam Cruise Terminal appearance. Vitals: Built: 1997 Tonnage (GT) 45,537, Length 218.05m, Width 32.3m, Height 51.2m, Passengers 1,325.

Europe; Netherlands; Rotterdam Zuid; Cruise terminal; MS Rotterdam, Boatmen (Roeiers), Bollard, Cable

With the previous posts, it has become clear that bollards are part of a technical ánd labour system. In Rotterdam the latter has taken a specific shape, that of the KRVE, 'De Koninklijke Roeiers Vereeniging Eendracht'. It’s a cooperative association that holds the monopoly of mooring ships to the Rotterdam quays. It was founded in 1895. Back then, rowboats were still used to bring the cables ashore for fastening. For this reason, these boatmen were (and still are) called roeiers (rowers) in Dutch. A picture of their modern transport is here.

This is post number 6 of the new Bollard & Co album.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminapier, Cruise termnal, Crowd control barriers, Pedestrian, De Rotterdam (slightly cut from L, B & T)

The giant shrouded in the mist is 'De Rotterdam’ high rise (2014, OMA/Koolhaas). In the building are a hotel, municipal offices, apartments and a multilevel parking. The context, the Wilhelminapier, is the redeveloped pier which once was the home of the HAL (Holland Amerika Line) shipping company.

The soundtrack: Giant - Benyamin Nuss & Masashi Hamauzi.

Europe, The Netherlands, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminapier, Cruise terminal, P&O Ionia, Bow (slightly cut from all sides)

The P&O Ionia visited Rotterdam a half year ago. She was now here for a regular call. The union jack liveried ship had a rather rocky start due to the Covid pandemic during the first year of her commission. The festive inauguration cruise and all the other cruises of 2020 were cancelled.

The ship is LNG powered and a member of the ‘Excellence class’, built at the Meyer Werft in Papenburg (Germany) and is basically the same as the other ships of the class, in service with Carnival Cruises, P&O and Aida – the companies belong to the same conglomerate.

At a Cruise Terminal it isn't all about passengers. A lot of cargo has to be shifted in a relatively short time period

Shot with the good ol' Tamron 28-300 (EF mount) coupled with the Lumix GX9 thru a 'dumb' Urth mount adapter, so manually focussed.

Cirrus clouds are typically found at heights greater than 6000 meters and are composed of ice crystals that originate from the freezing of supercooled water droplets. Cirrus clouds generally occur in fair weather and point in the direction of air movement at their elevation.
