Thorns on crown of thorns, Christ thorn or Christ plant, Euphorbia milii. The plant is native to Madagascar.
For the Macro Mondays theme: sharp. Width 2.25 in. Taken in the early morning when the light was very uni-directional creating strong shadows.

It's been very windy, dark and rainy here, but not really very cold. So I spent most of my time in the Hortus in the desert glass house looking at Euphorbias.
Here on Crown of Thorns is one of those all-pervasive wonderful Marmalade Hoverflies. It's not after pollen but lapping sweets directly from Flower's nectar glands.

They are actually Euphorbia milii (crown of thorns) flowers. Don't they look like apple-butts though?

Crown of Thorns Plant
Botanical Name: Euphorbia milii
Crown of Thorns plant is one of the rare succulents capable of blooming almost year-round. It also happens to be one of the easiest to grow indoors, preferring the same warm conditions we do.
Bright-green leaves grow along its thick, thorny stems. Lower leaves naturally fall off as the plant ages -- and they won't grow back. If your plant gets too tall and leggy, you can prune it back by half its size in spring. This will cause it to branch out. New stems will grow from below where the pruning cuts were made, making this succulent bushy and full.

Euphorbia milii, the crown of thorns, Christ plant, or Christ thorn, called Corona de Cristo in Latin America (coroa-de-cristo in Brazil), is a species of flowering plant in the spurge family Euphorbiaciae, native to Madagascar. The species name commemorates Baron Milius, once Governor of Réunion, who introduced the species to France in 1821. It is imagined that the species was introduced to the Middle East in ancient times, and legend associates it with the crown of thorns worn by Christ. It is a succulent subshrub or shrub growing to 1.8 m tall, with densely spiny stems. The flowers are small, subtended by a pair of conspicuous petal-like bracts, variably red, pink or white, up to 12 mm broad. 19014

This is one of my favorite tropical flowers! The lovely overlapping petals and beautiful button-like centers with golden stamens. The petals are fleshy and so the rain seems to stick to them, hanging there on humid mornings just waiting for me and my camera!

As I enlarged the image of the plant (crown of thorns) I noticed the bird like features - maybe I should take less meds.
The crown of thorns is a succulent shrub with densely spiny stems. The spines help it scramble over other plants.

The bizarre-looking, slow-moving, plant-eating walking stick - among the most intriguing of the insects - has raised camouflage, mimicry and defense to a veritable art form. Through an adaptation called "crypsis," it blends in so perfectly with its natural habitat that it often goes completely undetected by would-be predators. Its taxonomic family name, "Phasmatidae," derived from the Greek word "Phasma," means, appropriately, phantom or apparition.
