DCU Shazam! - Issue #5
I spend the whole next day hanging out with my new family in town. We live in the suburbs, just outside Fawcett City, where there are only a few stores, but there's still plenty to do.
Freddie asks if I wanna go to the skate-park. I say yes, of course. I’ve never really been one for skateboards, but I can ride. We only have two boards, so I take turns with Eugene, while Mary and Pedro also take turns. Darla isn’t particularly interested in riding them, but she does record us with her video camera. I don’t think I’ve actually ever used a video camera, but I don’t tell any of them this.
Darla manages to get a few great shots of me skating alongside Mary, and a really funny one of Pedro flailing off his board right at the peak of a half-pipe. Don’t worry, he’s fine. We can hear Freddie laughing hysterically in the background of the footage, which only makes it funnier.
As we’re all gathered around the camera, watching the footage back, we don’t notice some other kids enter the skate-park. However, we take notice when they try to snatch Eugene’s skateboard, right out of his hands!
Eugene Choi: “Hey man! You can’t have this, it’s not even mine!”
Teenager: “You aren’t using it! And we need another one!”
The teenager lets loose of the board when we all turn to face him. Freddie raises one of his crutches like a weapon. The guy snarls, and turns tail, running back to his friends.
This may have been a mistake.
About a dozen similarly scruffy teenagers, most of them older than us, come over to our corner of the skate-park. Mary steps out in front of our group, and addresses the leader of these teenagers, who must be about her age.
Mary Bromfield: “You can’t have it, Matthew!”
I assume that they go to the same high school that my foster siblings do. I can’t wait to attend...
Matthew Morris: “Whatever dweeb. I’m more interested in who the scrawny new freak is”
He looks directly at me. Unsure what to do, I step forward and offer a handshake.
Billy Batson: “My name’s Billy. Billy Batso-”
He slaps my hand away, then smacks me in the head so hard across the face that I fall to the ground. All his little cronies friends are laughing, until…
Freddie Freeman launches one of his crutches directly into Matthew’s nuts, then leaps onto his chest and starts repeatedly beating him across the face. Over, and over again. I can’t help but grin from ear-to-ear.
Matthew’s cronie friends are too stunned to do anything. Who would’ve expected a skinny, 80 lbs, 14 year old with a limp leg and crutches to tackle a strong, build senior student, twice his weight.
Mary lifts Freddie up off Matthew. His nose is clearly broken and he’ll probably have a black eye too. I would’ve never expected such anger and fercosity from him. As everyone gets back onto their feet, and Matthew is helped up by his cronies, we all hear the *CLIK-CLUNK* of Darla’s video camera as it finishes recording.
She recorded the entire thing.
At this point, we knew it was time to run away.
Matthew Morris: “You’re all dead! Freeman! Batson! ALL OF YOU!”
We run until we can’t hear him yelling any more.

Kathleen Cronie from ‘Mostly Ghostly’ entertains with a story connected to one of the fascinating gravestones in Anwoth Kirkyard. The ruined Kirk is one of the locations used in both the film ‘The Wicker Man’ and the documentary ‘Return to Summerisle.’ ‘Mostly Ghostly’ did an excellent tour of it as part of the weekend’s celebrations of the premiere of ‘Return to Summerisle.’ Anwoth Old Kirk near Gatehouse of Fleet, Dumfries and Galloway.
Cabinet card portrait by the World's Fair Photo View Co., Washington, D.C.
This is almost certainly the Marie Theresa Rabbitt Rouse who died in Washington 3/24/1929 and is buried at Rock Creek Cemetery.
Born in Georgetown on 12/19/1887, her father Charles F. Rabbitt appears to have left the family and remarried by 1898. She and her mother, Marietta Gordon (sometimes given as Maryetta or Mary) appear as boarders with Menzo O. and Ida Flanders Burnham and their children at 403 Four and 1/2 St., SW in the 1900 census, her connection to this album.
Marie married Charles P. Rouse sometime before 1910, and they had one child, Charles G. Rouse (born c. 1906).
Her mother outlived her, and is buried with the family of her fourth husband, Robert F. Cronie, at Rock Creek.
Album caption: "Marie Gordon Rouse".
Written on verso: "Marie Gordon".
Many thanks to Denise Tracy for her assistance with this one.

THE LIGHTHOUSE OF ETERNAL LIGHT
Located nearly 2 miles off shore is the one of the jewels of the Cronie Empire, The Lighthouse of Eternal Light. Built on a small rock island, it is manned by a 5 man team that spends a two month tour on the island. The lighthouse has the added ability of being a warning beacon of an impending attack by quickly dousing the fire.

Tam O'Shanter
WHEN chapman billies leave the street,
And drouthy neebors, neebors meet;
As market-days are wearing late,
An folk begin to tak the gate;
While we sit bousing at the nappy,
An getting fou and unco happy,
We think na on the lang Scots miles,
The mosses, waters, slaps, and styles,
That lie between us and our hame,
Whare sits our sulky, sullen dame,
Gathering her brows like gathering storm,
Nursing her wrath to keep it warm.
This truth fand honest Tam o Shanter,
As he frae Ayr ae night did canter:
(Auld Ayr, wham ne'er a town surpasses,
For honest men and bonie lasses).
O Tam had'st thou but been sae wise,
As taen thy ain wife Kate's advice!
She tauld thee weel thou was a skellum,
A blethering, blustering, drunken blellum;
That frae November till October,
Ae market-day thou was nae sober;
That ilka melder wi the miller,
Thou sat as lang as thou had siller;
That ev'ry naig was ca'd a shoe on,
The smith and thee gat roarin fou on;
That at the Lord's house, even on Sundav,
Thou drank wi Kirkton Jean till Monday.
She prophesied that, late or soon,
Thou would be found, deep drown'd in Doon,
Or catch'd wi warlocks in the mirk,
By Alloway's auld,haunted kirk.
Ah, gentle dames, it gars me greet,
To think how monie counsels sweet,
How monie lengthen'd, sage advices
The husband frae the wife despises!
But to our tale:- Ae market-night,
Tam had got planted unco right,
Fast by an ingle, bleezing finely,
Wi reaming swats, that drank divinely;
And at his elbow, Souter Johnie,
His ancient, trusty, drouthy cronie:
Tam lo'ed him like a very brither;
They had been fou for weeks thegither.
The night drave on wi sangs and clatter;
And ay the ale was growing better:
The landlady and Tam grew gracious,
Wi favours secret, sweet, and precious:
The Souter tauld his queerest stories;
The landlord's laugh was ready chorus:
The storm without might rair and rustle,
Tam did na mind the storm a whistle.
Care, mad to see a man sae happy,
E'en drown'd himsel amang the nappy.
As bees flee hame wi lades o treasure,
The minutes wing'd their way wi pleasure:
Kings may be blest but Tam was glorious,
O'er a' the ills o life victorious!
But pleasures are like poppies spread:
You seize the flow'r, its bloom is shed;
Or like the snow falls in the river,
A moment white then melts for ever;
Or like the borealis race,
That flit ere you can point their place;
Or like the rainbow's lovely form
Evanishing amid the storm.
Nae man can tether time or tide,
The hour approaches Tam maun ride:
That hour o night's black arch the key-stane,
That dreary hour Tam mounts his beast in:
And sic a night he taks the road in,
As ne'er poor sinner was abroad in.
The wind blew as `twad blawn its last;
The rattling showers rose on the blast;
The speedy gleams the darkness swallow'd;
Loud, deep, and lang the thunder bellow'd;
That night, a child might understand,
The Deil had business on his hand.
Weel mounted on his gray mare Meg,
A better never lifted leg,
Tam skelpit on thro dub and mire,
Despising wind, and rain, and fire;
Whiles holding fast his guid blue bonnet,
Whiles crooning o'er an auld Scots sonnet,
Whiles glow'ring round wi prudent cares,
Lest bogles catch him unawares:
Kirk-Alloway was drawing nigh,
Whare ghaists and houlets nightly cry.
By this time he was cross the ford,
Whare in the snaw the chapman smoor'd;
And past the birks and meikle stane,
Whare drunken Charlie brak's neck-bane;
And thro the whins, and by the cairn,
Whare hunters fand the murder'd bairn;
And near the thorn, aboon the well,
Whare Mungo's mither hang'd hersel.
Before him Doon pours all his floods;
The doubling storm roars thro the woods;
The lightnings flash from pole to pole,
Near and more near the thunders roll:
When, glimmering thro the groaning trees,
Kirk-Alloway seem'd in a bleeze,
Thro ilka bore the beams were glancing,
And loud resounded mirth and dancing.
Inspiring bold John Barleycorn,
What dangers thou canst make us scorn!
Wi tippenny, we fear nae evil;
Wi usquabae, we'll face the Devil!
The swats sae ream'd in Tammie's noddle,
Fair play, he car'd na deils a boddle.
But Maggie stood, right sair astonish'd,
Till, by the heel and hand admonish'd,
She ventur'd forward on the light;
And, vow! Tam saw an unco sight!
Warlocks and witches in a dance:
Nae cotillion, brent new frae France,
But hornpipes, jigs, strathspeys, and reels,
Put life and mettle in their heels.
A winnock-bunker in the east.
There sat Auld Nick, in shape o beast;
A touzie tyke, black, grim and large,
To gie them music was his charge:
He screw'd the pipes and gart them skirl,
Till roof and rafters a' did dirl.
Coffins stood round, like open presses,
That shaw'd the dead in their last dresses;
And, by some devilish cantraip sleight,
Each in its cauld hand held a light:
By which heroic Tam was able
To note upon the haly table,
A murderer's banes, in gibbet-airns;
Twa span-lang, wee, unchristen'd bairns;
A thief new-cutted frae a rape -
Wi his last gasp his gab did gape;
Five tomahawks, wi bluid red-rusted.
Five scymitars, wi murder crusted;
A garter which a babe had strangled;
A knife a father's throat had mangled -
Whom his ain son o life bereft -
The grey-hairs yet stack to the heft;
Wi mair of horrible and awefu,
Which even to name wad be unlawfu.
As Tammie glowr'd, amaz'd and curious,
The mirth and fun grew fast and furious;
The piper loud and louder blew,
The dancers quick and quicker flew,
They reel'd, they set, they cross'd, they
cleekit,
Till ilka carlin swat and reekit,
And coost her duddies to the wark,
And linket at it in her sark!
Now Tam, O Tam! had thae been queans. .
A' plump and strapping in their teens!
Their sarks, instead o creeshie flannen,
Been snaw-white seventeen hunder linen!-
Thir breeks o mine, my only pair,
That ance were plush, o guid blue hair,
I wad hae gien them off my hurdies,
For ae blink o the bonie burdies!
But wither'd beldams, auld and droll,
Rigwoodie hags wad spean a foal,
Louping and flinging on a crummock,
I wonder did na turn thy stomach!
But Tam kend what was what fu brawlie:
There was ae winsome wench and wawlie,
That night enlisted in the core,
Lang after kend on Carrick shore
(For monie a beast to dead she shot,
An perish'd monie a bonie boat,
And shook baith meikle corn and bear,
And kept the country-side in fear).
Her cutty sark, o Paisley harn,
That while a lassie she had worn,
In longitude tho sorely scanty,
It was her best, and she was vauntie...
Ah! little kend thy reverend grannie,
That sark she coft for her wee Nannie,
Wi twa pund Scots ('twas a' her riches),
Wad ever grac'd a dance of witches!
But here my Muse her wing maun cour,
Sic flights are far beyond her power:
To sing how Nannie lap and flang
(A souple jade she was and strang),
And how Tam stood like ane bewitch'd,
And thought his very een enrich'd;
Even Satan glowr'd, and fidg'd fu fain,
And hotch'd and blew wi might and main:
Till first ae caper, syne anither,
Tam tint his reason a' thegither,
And roars out, 'Weel done, Cutty-sark!'
And in an instant all was dark:
And scarcely had he Maggie rallied,
When out the hellish legion sallied.
As bees bizz out wi angry fyke,
When plundering herds assail their byke;
As open pussie's mortal foes,
When, pop! she starts before their nose;
As eager runs the market-crowd,
When 'Catch the thief!' resounds aloud:
So Maggie runs. the witches follow,
Wi monie an eldritch skriech and hollow.
Ah, Tam! Ah, Tam! thou'll get thy fairin!
In hell they'll roast thee like a herrin!
In vain thy Kate awaits thy comin!
Kate soon will be a woefu woman!
Now, do thy speedy utmost, Meg,
And win the key-stane of the brig;
There, at them thou thy tail may toss,
A running stream they dare na cross!
But ere the key-stane she could make,
The fient a tail she had to shake;
For Nannie, far before the rest,
Hard upon noble Maggie prest,
And flew at Tam wi furious ettle;
But little wist she Maggie's mettle!
Ae spring brought off her master hale,
But left behind her ain grey tail:
The carlin claught her by the rump,
An left poor Maggie scarce a stump.
Now, wha this tale o truth shall read,
Ilk man, and mother's son, take heed:
Whene'er to drink you are inclin'd,
Or cutty sarks rin in your mind,
Think! ye may buy the joys o'er dear:
Remember Tam o Shanter's mare.

St Bernard's Mill, Gildersome was built in the late 1700's/early 1800's. It's rather remote location, between Leeds and the village of Gildersome meant that shortly after opening a row of cottages were built to house key mill workers.
The St Bernard has kept watch over the mill from his vantage point on the roof for two centuries, ready to alert it's owners in the event of fire. Venturing inside, past rubbish and boxes, we spotted an archway into a second room. Hanging from the beam was a mannequin.
Round the manequin's neck was a sign that said "Cronie, please pay ? wages"
More cold war propaganda from my archives, this time from the western side.
In this brochure from 1986 the Bavarian Government enlightens its citizens about the border between Bavaria and GDR (which, I'm glad to say, is not visible any more), but not without ideological bias.
This is a fold-out map (of no particular place), explaining the different fortifications erected by the East German authorities. The fence was part of my world as a child: I grew up just a few miles away.

my drouthy cronie and I were down at a very windy, wet and gray Portobello late Sunday afternoon then into evening. Out of the cold wind and rain and into the warmth and a pair of comfy old chairs in the Espy, a great pub and bistro right on the promenade, front windows overlooking the beach and sea. Also a very family and dog friendly place to go if you're looking for a nice spot.
Not been terribly well last few days, better now and needed out the house after days of being in, off to pub by the sea for drink and company. And the barman pointed us to the back table where very nice man from Innis & Gunn, a great Indy Scottish brewery, had set up and had samples of their brews, including some new stuff and some that was usually for export. So what a nice bonus we got, sampling all sorts of different real ales (free!) and enjoying some chat with the man from the brewery, the man who runs the pub and some other folk trying them. And of course I had to take a pic or two...

From left to right its the amazing Tam Smith, (kings may be blessed but Tam wis glorious ower a' the ills o' life victorious) "wee brither" Drew, (an' at his elbow Souter Johnie, his ancient drouthie cronie, he lood 'im like a vera brither, they hid been fou fur weeks thegither), me with my new Christmas watch ticking away these golden hours (as bees flew hame wi lades o' treasure, the minutes winged thir wey wi' pleasure), and the inimitable Ian McGuinness now decamped from Hurlford to Stewarton. I see my brother at this time of year when he visits his family in Galston. We were all classmates throughout our distinctive Hurlford schooling.
And so "the nicht drave oan wi' sangs an' clatter an' aye the ale wis growin better"... Burns's Tam O'Shanter seems aye tae hit the sweet spot....
Godammit! These cronies are fricken impossible teh work with! I had teh run 'round the whole freaking factory to find the most sober and awake guy! But hot dog, I found some kid just resting againt the dirty old walls of this place and got him to work. I talked with him for a moment... I yelled at him and said ''Get your self workin'! I got my own shit teh do you ya cronie!'' Then the guy woke up and said ''Uh what? Hmmm? Oh hey mask, Ill get right on what you want me to do!'' ''Good go unpack some guns....

Michael is an old cronie of mine from way back....well, as way back as 2003. We were FLL's (thats Flexible Learning Leaders for those of you not in the know), funded scholarships by the Australian Flexible Learning Framework.
Michael is the king of voice. He was pioneering the use of voice online tools light years before a significant amt of this technology was around. We are pretty much talking Web1.0 stuff here, with amazing collaboration skills & innovation.
It's always good to catch up with the FLL's - we do tend to fall over each other a lot, even though there aren't too many of us...what Michael? 130ish?
.....this man plays a mean guitar, sings a great Lion Sleeps Tonight, and kicks arse in a peasant dance...thats another story tho!

Jean's statue stands to the left of the entrance to Mauchline's public library and is flanked on either side by a raised flower bed bedecked in verse foreby the flowers. The illustrated text comes from Robert Burns's great poem: -
THE HOLY FAIR (Part)
Which opens up with: -
A robe of seeming truth and trust
Hid crafty Observation;
And secret hung, with poison'd crust,
The dirk of Defamation:
and six verses on comes the featured lines:
"My name is Fun-your cronie dear,
The nearest friend ye hae;
An' this is Superstitution here,
An' that's Hypocrisy.
I'm gaun to Mauchline Holy Fair,
To spend an hour in daffin:
Gin ye'll go there, yon runkl'd pair,
We will get famous laughin
At them this day."
Robert Burns 1759-1796.
