Beautiful little finches, caught here on a fencepost, so glad I caught this as they have managed to elude me and my camera on all my trips to the USA.
Northern Cardinals do occur in London (Canada) year round and do not migrate. They have dense down feathers that provide insulation during the colder months. Males and female birds can be distinguished visually by their plumage: males have bright red feathers while the female is a reddish-olive colour.
Taken in the garden where there's a little clump of them. They're such a rich crimson red and I love them so much. I'm not a huge fan of hyacinths but when they're this colour! :-))
The heart of the bloom of a rose which I bought yesterday as part of a bouquet. It seemed to have an over abundance of petals which I thought lent themselves very nicely for a frame filling macro shot

It seemed like Hibiscus Acetosella "Haight Ashbury" with its riotous and energetic display of color was just right to welcome and celebrate the start of 2019. The leaves display a color combination of crimson red, pinks, burgundy, milk white and creamy white and will surely attract and awe anyone who is passing by. MAY YOUR AWESOMENESS SHINE IN 2019.

Abutilon 'Nabob'
Giant bells of deep crimson-red, the largest flower of all the bell shaped hybrids. The unusual flower color and luxuriant foliage make this one of the most popular varieties.
Crimson is a strong, bright, deep red color combined with some blue, resulting in a tiny degree of purple. It is originally the color of the dye produced from a scale insect, Kermes vermilio, but the name is now also used for slightly bluish-red colors in general that are between red and rose.

This was a totally random shot taken with my arm stretched out over a flower bed. If I had of been able to look through the view finder I would had tried to compose a better shot. After playing around with it I liked the velvet look so had to share it.
Cardinalis cardinalis - Sitting on posts in our vegetable garden in Carmel, New York. The adult male is a brilliant crimson red color with a black face mask over the eyes. It has a prominent raised crest and a bright coral-colored beak that is cone-shaped.

I photographed this beautiful male Anna's Hummingbird at my sister's sugar dispensary where she distributes huge quantities of liquid sugar in the hummingbird feeders that attract vast swarms of these tiny terrors. The beating of tiny wings keeps the air moving, even on a hot day with no wind. A "disturbance in the force" I think it's called. If you press "L" on your keyboard or click on the picture, you can view the bird larger than life size. They're about the size of a ping pong ball and weight as much as a nickel.
I used three strobes on light stands to photograph the birds today. I put one on either side of the feeder and one underneath pointed up to light the birds from below. It was an overcast day which meant I could turn down the power on the strobes as I wasn't competing against a bright sunlit background. Each strobe was at 1/16 power. The advantage of using lower power on the strobes when photographing these birds, is that you get a shorter flash duration which helps freeze the wings. I used a YN560-III, a YN560 and a Strobie 130. All strobes, in manual mode, were triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.
