Speckled bush-cricket (Leptophyes punctatissima) nymph [stk 2 frms]

This oak bush-cricket nymph (not sure which Meconema sp it is!!) sat quite happily on my watch!

Nocé - Parc du Perche - France

Cricket, missing a leg, Kalamaki. Zakynthos.

An early morning shot taken at Lake Baratz in north east Sardinia back in 2013.

I was going over some older images when I found this one which didn't look that interesting initially which is probably why I ignored it first time around. No idea which species it is.

Best viewed very large.

Please ZOOM in for a better view. A cricket ball defies the laws of gravity and vanishes into the blue.

Same cricket, same leg, same everything really :-)

I saw this whilst on holiday in Cyprus, I liked it best in black & white

...another 'cross-your-eyes' stereo image...a Bush Cricket in a bit of a tangle...

At the foot of Newtimber Hill on the South Downs lies the village and cricket club of Poynings, this photo was taken in early Summer 2017 just as the season was getting underway and shows the peaceful setting in this great vista on the north side of the Downs. When viewed in a large size the players are quite visable.

Cricket - Cleethorpes.

The Indians love their cricket, you will see them playing it everywhere. Here a young boy plays cricket with a piece of wood as a bat on a ghat close to the River Ganges.

Cricket View Cafe, Low Bradfield Sheffield.

(That's $ who helps out there with his family. He knows me and always comes out for a chat, lovely chap..)

(This is one of our regular stops for a cappuccino and tea (plus cake!) when we are out and about..)

Had a Royal Enfield 'Yorkshire' meet up at Squires Biker Café this afternoon..!

Bit of a chilly ride..

Grateful to the heated grips, the handlebar muffs and my new heated waistcoat!!

Good to meet the guys. Met a few of them before on two RE Yorkshire rides.

A close up of the body of a Cricket

Could be Great-green... but! It was almost dusk when I took this, hence the slow shutter speed!

South Africa vs India cricket match - Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa

I am not trying to steal Graham's thunder, but happened to take this about the same time as he did, only at different ends of the country!

I found two of these Cave / Camel Crickets in my yard today (family Rhaphidophoridae). They are huge (over 6 inches if you stretch them out - body over 1 inch long).

These guys are the reason that early humans moved out of caves and into garden apartments. I'm also pretty sure this explains what happened to the stray cats in the neighborhood.

I think that this species buries it's dead. Once or twice a week, I hear them chanting in my basement and smell incense burning.

Juhu, Mumbai's premier beach has cleaned up and is now bustling with enthusiastic residents indulging in their favorite sports early morning.

This is cricket, India's obsession, favorite sports, and some say, primary religion :)

Have a series of shots here, will post them gradually...

Within a short time the grasshopper has been decapitated. Comparing the size of its legs to those of its captor shows just what a big & impressive creature the bush cricket is.

Cricket, Sai Kung, Hong Kong

A kind of cricket with outsized antennae. Probably in Regina. No notes on that day. Saskatchewan, Canada. 8 August 2022

Genus Ceuthophilus

Other Common Names

Camel Cricket (usually applied to this genus), Cave Cricket (this and related genera)

Numbers

Nearctica.com lists 89 species; most diverse rhaphidophorid genus in North America.

Range: Canada through to Mexico

Habitat: Caves, basements, crawl spaces, outdoor closets.

Food: Reported to be scavengers. bugguide.net/node/view/24633

This individual lacks any prominent projections in between the antennal bases, which excludes Pristoceuthophilus (found mainly in BC) and Tachycines (which have quite long legs and cerci relative to body size compared to Ceuthophilus). The only other genus of camel crickets possible is Udeopsylla and those are quite distinctly robust, stocky and rust coloured with a very long pronotum. Identification to species often required clear and close views of the posterior abdomen, so many observations may have to rest at the genus level. For a great resource on identifying Orthoptera, including dichotomous keys, see Vickery and Kevan 1985 Insects and Arachnids of Canada, Part 14:

Castle and Cricket, Bamburgh, Northumberland, 6 Sep 2020

Cricket below Bamburgh Castle and glorious weather!

Last game of the season against touring side Nairobi Nomads.

Bamburgh won.

I found this Cricket foraging on a Dandelion at the Monte Orlando Nature Preserve in Gaeta, Italy in July of 2020. The nature preserve gets a lot of foot traffic, so I think this critter was use to people being around.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/125, ISO 200) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (2x) + a diffused MT-26EX RT (E-TTL metering). This is a single, cropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI and Clarity in that order. I dragged the shutter and increased the ISO to expose for the natural light in the background while keeping the subject in the shade.

Spotted this speckled bush cricket nymph about an hour after seeing the first of the year. Perched on a hebe leaf
