The darkness of the night at sea was broken by running lights that revealed a sparkling diamond crest and some foam.

The Parliament Hill - West Block is a highly picturesque, building of Nepean sandstone, mansard copper roofs, iron cresting, and Gothic detailing. Facing the centre lawn of Parliament Hill, the present building incorporates two extensions. A distinguishing feature is the tall Mackenzie tower. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building. Canadian Heritage Status ~ 1865

While not a long walk, it's a steep one. I constantly asked myself why I was doing this. I was on vacation, for god's sake!

Pacific Crest Trail, Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Washington

After what has seemed like the longest, wettest, coldest spring ever, and after hiking last weekend in a chilly downpour with rain gear and fleece layers, I finally had the chance to hike in glorious summer sunshine today.

The higher alpine areas are still under snow cover, including much of my favorite summer hiking destination, Mount Rainier National Park. So I headed to the mid-elevation mountains of the Central Cascades near Snoqualmie Pass and hiked a section of the Pacific Crest Trail. It is always a bit of a thrill for me to hike on part of this iconic trail and today the views were spectacular.

It was a joyous, heart-happy day being back in the mountains and the sunshine, and the entire hike felt like a celebration.

Every winter I make the journey north to photograph the Crested Tits as they come down to feed on the lower branches . In the Spring through to autumn the Cresties feed higher up in the canopy and means winter will afford much better opportunities to photograph them, often down at eye level,an opportunity I cannot resist.

So that's why they call it the Rocky Mountains.

The iconic "Punchbowl" is located on the 2nd, longest peninsula. Much to enjoy and admire along this stretch of the Oregon Coast.

I appreciate your taking a look, and for any comments, faves and suggestions.

Have a wonderful Wednesday.

Eastbound ZLAME 09 is about to crest the summit of Beaumont Hill in the late afternoon. The overpass just west of Beaumont provides some nice views of trains on the final mile of their ascent eastward.

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Final crest of Cima Barba D'Orso

Well-camouflaged chickenlike bird. Intricately patterned plumage varies from cold gray to rich reddish-brown. Look for relatively long, squared tail with dark band near the tip, bold barring on the sides, and small pointed crest. Typically shy and difficult to see well. Often flushed from the forest floor, exploding into the air with a startling burst of wingbeats and then gliding down towards the next hiding place. Sometimes ventures onto roadsides to pick up grit. In spring, males beat their wings to produce a distinctive low-pitched drumming sound. Widespread and locally fairly common across northern North America, from the Appalachians to Alaska. Especially fond of forested areas with dense understory and secondary growth. (eBird)

My husband saw this well-camouflaged bird standing quietly in the grasses beside the trail. The bird waited patiently for us to go away, but when it became evident that we were interested in him, he ducked under the log and walked away. Shortly after, we experienced the adrenaline-pumping explosion of a second grouse from the other side of the trail. Quite a shock. It was wonderful to see this handsome bird, though. Usually, my year bird tick is based solely on his almost sub-sonic drumming during the spring.

We are at the highest point on the Union Pacific Railroad's Caliente Sub, but this grossly overpowered train with two SD70Ms leading a pair of GEs has had no trouble climbing the 2% grade with this tiny train of just over 1000 ft on their headpin. I'm unsure of the symbol, but despite the warm evening light this is actually an eastbound train as the line orients slightly northwest here at the 5962 ft summit aptly known as Crestline. This is MP 494.5 on the old Los Angeles and Salt Lake Route and is the second highest point on the line bested only by Boulter Summit in Tintic, UT which is about 110 ft higher some 200 miles to the northeast on the Lynndyl Sub.

Conrail 6743 moves train #RR-232 around the connection for "Tower Tuesday", passing the long out of service but still standing Crest Tower. This connection was kind of in the wrong quadrant for what this eastbound train had to do, as it was a train off the Pennsy using the New York Central to go north. So in either direction, the train had to back through the connection.

Tufted Titmouse.

Sparrow-sized at 6 inches. Gray above and whitish below with rust colored sides and a gray crest. The "Black-crested Titmouse" is a species found in southwestern Oklahoma and Texas and is similar but has a black crest.

Their habitat includes swampy or moist woodlands, and shade trees in villages and city parks.

They range from eastern Nebraska east to Maine and south to Texas in the west and central Florida in the east.

Once again it is harvest time. Fields become our playground for interesting photos with patterns and rolled bales of hay. I wanted to create an image that contained 3 elements. Starting with a foreground, the fencing, a mid area, the bails and a background, the lines of freshly harvested work.

I noticed the farming tractor making his rounds and waited with my image in place. As he crested the horizon I took a few shots and chose this one given his position. It took a long time to get it right but unfortunately I have the time.
