"I rode my bicycle past your window last night
I roller skated to your door at daylight
It almost seems like you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone but you got something I need"
~Melanie / Brand New Key

Here's my buddy Lou Rivera Jr at the 1977 Ed McMahon-Jaycees Quad-Cities Open. I was there shooting Pro-Am groups in my offical capacity as tournament photographer, and I recruited Lou to help me out that day. We'd set ourselves up at one of the tees, me at #1 and Lou at #10, so that I wouldn't have to stay in one place all day as the groups rotated thru. We split the field in two and thereby cut the time in half.
BTW: It was with Lou's good graces that I attended my first QCO back in 1975 (the year that Roger Maltbie won). As I so often did, I tagged along on his photo assignment for the Moline Daily Dispatch and once I was credentialed I was free to make my own shots.
Having had that prior experience (combined with Moline Jaycees membership) likely landed me the plum spot as official photog for the Open in 1976 and thereafter.
As of this writing (2021/10) Lou's still alive and kicking. Being twenty years' my senior would make him 87 (and counting). We still speak via phone and his memory is razor sharp. He's always reminding me of this or that thing which we did and which I'd forgotten.
I sincerely wish that he were up to speed with the Internet, email, etc. but he isn't online and so, he's unable to read my missives or to check out the archive. I'm sure that he'd get a big kick out of it all. As it is, I'm mailing print copies to him of ourselves and some of the stuff we did together and we relive our exploits like that.
Here's something that we'd do together and which inspired the song selection for this photo. A lot of times after we'd hit the darkroom at the Dispatch where he'd develop and print his assignment pix we'd go and grab a bit to eat. Often it'd be late, or even very late. The Maid-Rite on 5th Avenue in Moline was always open and so we'd go. I don't remember exactly (but Lou would) if they played a radio station in the restaurant or had one of those on-the-counter juke box selectors but it was the early Seventies and 'Brand New Key' was in heavy rotation at the time. I'll always associate that song with late night dinners at the Maid-Rite with Lou.

Stakes winner Smash Ticket, in foal to Nyquist, was the sales topper at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale Book 2 opening session. She sold for $600,000 to Flying Dutchmen. Back in 2022, the then three-year-old filly (inside) won an allowance optional claimer at Saratoga. This was my first summer as a credentialed photographer and one of my first days of shooting.

"Our Shipmate in the Spotlight for this edition is LCDR Elias Gonzalez. After graduating from Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry in 2013, LCDR Gonzalez completed a credentialing tour in Pensacola, FL at Naval Branch Health Clinic Naval Air Technical
Training Center, where he received his first Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
From 2014 to 2017 LCDR Gonzalez served an operational tour in Iwakuni, Japan with 11th Dental Company Detachment, where he directly contributed to the clinic achieving 98% operational dental readiness. During Exercise Dragon Fire in Camp Fuji, he led a team in providing dental support to over 100 marines and successfully established a fully functional field dental treatment facility, increasing the unit's operational dental readiness by 12%. LCDR Gonzalez received his second Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal upon completion of his operational tour.
From 2017 to 2021, LCDR Gonzalez was assigned to Naval Branch Health Clinic Naval Air Station Pensacola, where he served as Dental Division Officer. His efforts led to a 15% reduction in network referrals, a 50% improvement in access to care, and an 8% increase in operational dental readiness. He deployed with the USNS Comfort for operation Enduring Promise and provided humanitarian dental care to over 3,200 patients in Ecuador, Peru, Honduras, and Colombia; while onboard, he received the Shellback certificate and the Order of the Ditch certificate. LCDR Gonzalez was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for his achievements while assigned to NBHC NASP. In July 2021, LCDR Gonzalez separated from active duty and joined a private practice in Pensacola, FL. Upon separating, LCDR Gonzalez transitioned into the U.S. Navy Reserve and is currently assigned to Navy Reserve Bancroft Hall Med. LCDR Gonzalez serves as Dental Department Head during his drill weekends at Navy Reserve Center Pensacola.
Fun Facts
Hometown: I was born in Rota, SPAIN and lived there until I moved to Pensacola, FL at ten years old.
Dental School: Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, TX.
Favorite thing about being a Navy Dental Corps Officer: The Navy is part of my family's DNA. My dad and two uncles served full careers in the Navy; now my two older brothers and myself are all Naval officers, and the three of us get to work together at the same clinic during our drill weekends in Pensacola, FL (photo below). I enjoy the camaraderie and the unique opportunities the Navy has given
me. Some of these opportunities: living overseas and experiencing new cultures; providing dental care to the Blue Angels (photo below); working alongside specialists and collaborating with them to expand my scope of practice; and last but not least, riding a helicopter to work (I keep this last one in my back pocket in case I need to one-up my civilian friends...).
Hobbies: Soccer, traveling, and spending time with family.
Something that most people don't know about you: I participated in a talent show back in 2018 while on deployment aboard the USNS Comfort. The talent show had four separate rounds across six weeks,
and somehow, I ended up making it to the finale and won a Nintendo Switch. The talent? Beatboxing."Published in Weekly Dental Update August 11, 2023.
