A few days back, I posted a picture of a Chestnut-mandibled Toucan. If one of these birds is great, I guess "two can" be even more better. All right - insert groan here. I couldn't help myself. OK, back to the birds. This is the Keel-billed Toucan and it is quite different from the other one - totally different designs and colors on its beak.

I think this bird breaks a few design rules. If I generalize just a little, I would say that we as human beings, love to be told the rules and then we tend follow them, sometimes mindlessly. Isn't it in our blood to - color inside the lines, follow the rule of thirds, not cut in line or run with scissors, and keep the horizon straight. Even as creatives we sometimes feel instinctively obliged to follow the rules of artistic expression. I have a hunch, that God, the ultimate creative, chuckles and says "Hah! Who says? Who says the beak can't be that large? And who says those colors don't necessarily vibrate well together? And color inside the lines? What lines? Aha - just watch what I can come up with." And the result of God's sense of humor and creativity gives us the Keel-billed Toucan and a host of other things that endlessly delight us in the natural world.

So as someone who is trying very hard to learn to be a creative, I think there is a great lesson here and I should pay attention.

And we'll all take another look at this toucan and smile.
