The Eagle Nebula is in the constellation of Serpens and contains several star forming regions. The “Pillars of Creation” are the tall spire like structures in the image composed of hydrogen and dust.

There are several smaller dark globules visible in this wide field image. Click to see the high resolution image.

Data for this image was collected by the following 1m telescopes operated by the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT) Network:

1m-04, 1m-05 and 1m-09 located at Cerro Tololo, Chile

1m-10 and 1m-12 located at Sutherland, South Africa

The Principal Investigator for this data set was BJ Fulton.

For this image I used publicly available data from the LCOGT Science Archive. This image is a false color image composed of data acquired by the LCOGT telescopes with the following filters:

SDSS i' Exposure: 172x3 mins = 8.6 hours

SDSS r' Exposure: 184x3mins = 9.2 hours

SDSS g' Exposure: 156x3 mins = 7.8 hours

Image replaced September 17, 2017. Stars are are now more neutral looking with less cyan or magenta cores. The image is also more pleasing with less red and stronger blues.

This was my last shot before hoofing it back to Gertrude back at Sunrise. (forgot about that last uphill) :-) This one is at 10mm and I'm posting it to show the scene in all of it's glory, truly a tear enticing moment for me as the sun loses the battle with the incoming weather. The next one will be at 20mm to bring the view home because standing there is like Mecca for me. I never fail to say Hello to the mountain when it deigns us with it's presence. Hope I don't live to see it blow.

Bending Light #67

This is another 'double refraction' . The refraction pattern of light formed through one of my glass objects is passed through one of my coloured plastic shapes. The result,as you can see, is quite complicated. There is still the basic shape of the glass refraction pattern but this is now broken down again by the second refraction.

For new viewers: these are analog images of the refraction patterns of a beam of light passing through various transparent objects. The image is captured directly on to 35mm film, no camera lens is used ( this is a photogram using film instead of photographic paper). No Photoshop is used only Picasa2 for alignment and cropping. The slide film was lab processed and scanned for uploading.

When viewed large the fine bands of diffraction patterns and also some refraction 'rainbows' can be seen.
