My granddaughter turns clay at Firehouse Pottery in Fort Worth.
Both Granddaughters really enjoy going to Firehouse for lessons. They have several creative and beautiful momentos from these trips.

Let's call him Prof Pangloss. He is experimenting with his sensory system (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) in order to verify what is in front of him. Sound, smell and taste don't apply, mainly because it is an artificial flower. Touch and vision, however, do produce lots of data. These data can not be 'digested' - they don't make 'sense', unless they are referenced against the prof's large memory banks. After having classified and recognised the object, his mind develops what was an incoherent mass of data into an image of a red artificial flower. That image was not "out there", it is created in his brain. And I am photographing as he is doing it. And you, the viewer, are doing what Pangloss did, you convert these five or so million dots and, then, you "see" the image. Fuji X-Pro1 plus Zhongyi Speedmaster 0.95/35 at F8.

This piece was created in response to a call out for submissions for a Batik Guild exhibition on the theme of 'Patterns of Change.'
An artistic response to climate change.
Typically I finished this not far from the deadline and submitted my photo and application for judging.
'This work started with me quite freely making marks, spontaneously playing with the batik process. There arose a playfulness in my thoughts that began to take form in the work being created, like converging energy flows running their own course then uniting as one.
It relates to the theme of patterns of change by acknowledging, with a childlike sense of wonder our need to live harmoniously and at one with nature.'
Glad to say that it's been accepted and will be exhibited alongside the works of other guild members in the gallery of the Naples Botanical Gardens in Florida, USA from May 4th to June 30th 2024 and is part of the International Year of Batik celebrations.
