Diana Eng presented the Fairytale Fashion Collection in a technology fashion show on Wed., February 24, 7PM, at Eyebeam. Models hit the runway while an orchestra of circuit bending DJ’s create music from hacked video game consoles.
The Fairytale Fashion Collection uses technology to create magical clothing in real life. Electronics, mechanical engineering, and mathematics are used to create clothing with blooming flowers, changing colors and transforming shapes. Research and development for the Fairytale Fashion collection are shared online at FairytaleFashion.org as an educational tool that teaches about science, math, and technology through fashion. Fairytale Fashion was created with the support of Eyebeam Art and Technology Center, the leading not-for-profit art and technology center in the United States.
Diana Eng is a fashion designer who specializes in technology, math, and science. Her designs range from inflatable clothing to fashions inspired by mechanical engineering. She is a designer from Bravo’s Emmy nominated TV show, Project Runway season 2 and author of Fashion Geek: Clothes, Accessories, Tech. Diana is cofounder of NYC Resistor hacker group. Diana is currently a resident artist at Eyebeam.
I didn’t think that it was possible to fit two cameras inside the Lowepro Fastpack 200. I was wrong.
Pictured: Canon EOS 7D + Canon EF 70-200 mm f/4L USM + Canon EOS M + Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM. Increasingly I am loving these f/4L lenses.
Although image quality is unbeatable with the f/2.8’s, it is no fun lugging deadweight when I travel. Comparatively speaking, the EF 100 f/2.8 Macro (not pictured) has both supreme image quality while being relatively light, thus making it ideal for travel use as well.
This bag is awesome. Highly recommended. As all the lenses and cameras, of course.
Taken with the iPad 3, processed in Snapseed.

Do artists adapt their language to suit the audience that they intended? Some apparently do. This is a large scale installation by Jaume Plensa, an Catalan Spanish artist and sculptor. Using stainless steel to string along latin alphabets to form human forms is a motif dominant in his sculpture works [1], but this might be the first instance of them in Asian characters.
Unlike latin characters which can form all kinds of different meanings just by the jumbling of a limited character set, seen here are a collages of selected scripts. Perhaps most bizarre though is that it features characters from both the Japanese Kanji to Japanese Kana, some simplified Chinese characters. I cannot read Japanese so I do not know if they say anything specific, But there are some recognisable characters, such as 時 (time), 建 (architecture), 男 (Men), 界 (world, division), 案 (document, project), 力 (strength).
Only the artist himself would know what all these mean to him, but being able to relate more succinctly to the works (which often feel alien to me because they reference cultures in another world) is very welcoming indeed.

# Jaume Plensa
Jaume Plensa (Spanish, b.1955) is one of the world's foremost sculptors working in the public space, with over 30 projects spanning the globe in such cities as Chicago, Dubai, London, Liverpool, Nice, Tokyo, Toronto, and Vancouver.
Over the past 25 years, the artist has produced a rich body of work in the studio and the public realm. By combining conventional sculptural materials (glass, steel, bronze, aluminum) with more unconventional media (water, light, sound, video), and frequently incorporating text, Plensa creates hybrid works of intricate energy and psychology. From his delicately textured, intimate works on paper—like his 2005-06 series of ethnographic portraits that resemble worn, 19th century photographs—to monumental outdoor sculptures like Nomade (2007) and a range of cityscape-altering public projects like the Crown Fountain in Chicago (2000-05), Plensa's work takes many forms.
Plensa's work is invested in evoking emotion and stimulating intellectual engagement. By posing conceptual dualities in his work (inside/outside, front/back, light/dark), Plensa seeks to connect with his viewers on an intuitive level. Often, the viewer participation, or the object/viewer relationship, is what completes Plensa's work.
The winner of many national and international awards, Jaume Plensa has had solo exhibitions at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Bretton, UK; Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas; Institut Valencia d'Art Modern, Spain; the Musée Picasso, Antibes, France; the Arts Club of Chicago; Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids, Michigan; Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid and Galerie National du Jeu de Paume, Paris among many others. He lives and works in Barcelona

At first I did not notice the humanoid in red jeans with a scruffy beard. I was all too focused on the installation hanging from the ceiling made with mirrors and wires.
But the sculpture was small—so small that I moved closed enough to examine further. But then within my wide angle lens came a pretty face who asked if I am interested in the work.
There is quite a bit of charm in finding a well-dressed, good-looking, soft-spoken, and intellectual cuteness within all the insanity at an art fair. I supposed this is why girls love going to galleries?
I never exchanged contact information with him. But as you can see, I do know where he works now, so it should not be too hard for me to locate him in the future. Perhaps when I am in Denmark for vacation I will give him a hola — after all, they do show truly brilliant works.

Two life-sized nude figures with long braided hair stand in front of a table on top of a Persian rug. A feast is served. It is that of a giant fish killed by arrows. The figures appear like tribal natives, but one is holding an umbrella in the modern era. The only thing that can summarize what is seen best is WTF?! This is the kind of works which I adore—things which although my logical unit cannot process, but I know I would love to live with it over time.
This installation is by Indonesian artist Entang Wiharso (b. 1967). There is not much written about him, except that his intention is “to combine personal, Western and Indonesian mythologies and cast a critical eye on the socio-political conditions of his country” — as with most art reviews, not entirely useful unfortunately.
If I have unlimited budget and can bring home any five items from Art Basel Hong Kong though, this would definitely be one of them. But I can’t quite reason why except that crazyisgood!
…Ironically my other favorite artist from the show, Chiharu Shiota, is also represented by ARNDT — trust that if I am ever in the market for some good works, they will be the one for me to visit.

I have often formed the opinion that artworks which you cannot relate is not the artwork for you. In usual fashion, I am drawn to works which I find to be slightly bizarre.
From the espresso maker which I am planning to buy, an “object and its unreliable witnesses,” the “talking clock” to the witty form juxtaposed near one”s belly, I find this piece of work to be a feast to the eye.
I haven’t had a chance to speak to the gallerists so I can only respond to this as candidly as I can. I am certain that there will be far more “high-brow” mumbo-jumbo which you can chow down on various art sites. The links are below. Meanwhile as a layman this South African piece is calling to me in more ways than one.
(Note: You do much prefer my nonsensical analysis more so than the impossible-to-read essays written by people who get As in English from Yale, right?)
Seriously WTF. Crazyisgood. SML Love. Highly recommended.

William Kentridge (born 28 April 1955) is a South African artist best known for his prints, drawings, and animated films. These are constructed by filming a drawing, making erasures and changes, and filming it again. He continues this process meticulously, giving each change to the drawing a quarter of a second to two seconds' screen time. A single drawing will be altered and filmed this way until the end of a scene. These palimpsest-like drawings are later displayed along with the films as finished pieces of art.

What happens when you string hundreds of hexagonal pieces of mirrors with vibrant concentric stripes together? A magical 3D kaleidoscope, it seems.
This installation titled “Supertaster” by Los Angeles-based artist Pae White is nothing short of being magical. With each step that viewer takes, the sculpture seems to change. And perhaps even more incredible is that its appearance changes depending on where the work was installed, as its myriads of mirrors reflect the sights from its surrounding.
In this stunning work, the insignificant becomes extraordinary. Highly recommended.

Since 1975, the BMW Art Car project has been inviting an international roster of artists to utilise their automobiles as canvas for art.
The project was introduced by the French racecar driver and auctioneer Hervé Poulain, starting with Alexander Calder and the CSL 3.0, which Poulain himself raced in the 1975 Le Mans endurance race. Although the cars were intended to be race in the beginning, these days it has shifted the focus somewhat to position BMW as a player in the arts as luxury global brands have been seen to sponsor many art programs.
Pictured is the BMW Art Car #10 seen at Art Basel Hong Kong recently. It was painted by César Manrique, art artist and architect born in Arrecife, Lanzarote, and grew up in the area of San Ginés lagoon. It was painted in 1990 on a BMW 730i.

For over 30 years, Los Angeles and Brooklyn based artist Kenny Scharf has been creating sparkly, pop-ed and monstrous paintings, sculptures and installations featuring imagery from animated cartoons in his childhood.
This particular character is called “Squirtz,” one of the artist’s “classic guys.” The one shown recently at Art Basel Hong Kong 2013 is a red one, though recently an 8-ft tall blue version can be spotted in New York at Paul Kasmin Gallery, The Standard, High Line when the artist has a solo show called “Kolors”.
The juxtaposition between the cheery sculpture and the gallerists show that the line which used to divide street art and fine art is becoming very blurry these days. Sparkly!

The last I saw Bert + Ernie was when I was still living in New York. When I decided to part with them during my international move to Hong Kong, they have decided to go visit Los Angeles for a year. Thankfully, after a year of traveling arrangement logistics with my sister in LA, they have safely arrived in Hong Kong.
The year alone and away from SML has been well to B+E — as now even Bert is starting to have a smile. Here they were seen holding hands during sunset on some rocks at the beach of Wu Kai Sha, pondering on thoughts that they have shared for so many years.

"Inspired by a uniformed attendant holding the sign Hold the Handrail in a Taipei metro station, I've created this moving installation/performance piece. In wearable sculptures of multicolored crocheted camouflage, my performers appear in various sites on 14th Street, displaying photographs of signs I've collected from different countries that are in emphatic, ironic or amused dialogue with their location."

彩熊 Rainbow Teddy (RT) is super psyched with the EOS M.
“Wow, this camera is the bomb!” RT said. “Finally there is a camera that I can control. I don’t even need a shutter release. I just point and it focuses. And the mirrorless body is light like me [1]. Best yet, I can even reach the lens for zooming.”
Pictured here with the Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM lens [2], the Canon EOS M is the first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera produced by Canon [3]. It is effectively a miniature version of the Canon EOS 650D with a simpler physical interface. Like the 7D, it contains a 18 megapixel APS-C crop frame CMOS chip. But unlike the 7D, it's focusing performance is rather poor.
However its saving grace is its ability to do full HD 1080p videography in AI servo mode—which is what SML now uses for lightweight travel use. Also now semi-permanently mounted on tripod to do videography for the Serenity series. Recommended.

Hong Kong’s bus stops are very long. Each stops usually have space to allow multiple buses “park” at the same time. They usually run along the highway, so having space for multiple buses to stop along the way is necessary. This enables high speed travel with stops along major districts.
You know why New York buses are inefficient? Because in New York every block is a traffic light. In Hong Kong the urban planning is different. Buses can run on highway all the time while sections of the pedestrian walk is crafted out for bus to stop.

Healthy alternatives for Chinese New Year candies prepared by my 二嬸 auntie when I went over to 拜年 (greetings for the New Year) — a Chinese traditional custom where you visit different families for good luck in the next year.
Incentives for kids to go is that you receive red pockets with $$$ in them. Only people who are married need to give out red pockets—which means that until gay marriage is legalised and SML has a mate, technically speaking SML never had to give out anything and can receive cash “prizes” every year. Like I said, being gay has its perks. :)

Rainbow Teddy (RT) went on a little date with Daddy Smurf at the Ma On Shan Sports Ground last night.
SML: What are you doing here?
RT: The property market in Hong Kong is off the charts, so we decided to join the flock of love birds in the area and come to this dark corner to have a date.
Daddy Smurf: Yes this place is made for us. It was so romantic until you have arrived.
SML: Oh, sorry about that. Let’s just take a photo and I will leave you be…

The best WTF finds from ABHK came from Indonesia. These two acrylic paintings in the “Band of Sober” series are the works of Uji Handoko, an artist born in 1983 (yes, seriously!) also known as “Hahan”, which feature traditional asian religious figures situated next to some truly demented happy characters.
Surreal pop wtf insanity is exactly the kind of art I love. For more of the artist work, visit thisishahan.wordpress.com/ or Twitter: twitter.com/UjiHahan or Instagram: instagram.com/hellohahan/ @hellohahan
Definitely someone to watch out for—if they know how to do social media marketing for themselves they are generally unstoppable for viral growth… :)

It was a quiet and sunny afternoon, and Rainbow Teddy (彩熊 RT @rainbowteddy8) wanted to play with the kids outside. In a kids playground nearby, RT found a metal jeep designed for his tiny figure. At first, there was another boy playing there also, but RT was quickly dismissed because of how he looks.
Boy: You are so weird. You have hair all over you.
SML: But he is a very good boy. He won’t hurt you.
Boy’s dad: Get away from my boy at once! Bears are dangerous. I saw it on TV. Why would you be such a careless parent to bring a bear to the playground?!
SML: He really doesn’t harm anyone…
(The dad and son team disappeared quicker than wind into thin air)
RT: It’s ok, SML, I am used to it. People always look at me and said that I am small, furry, ugly, weird, crazy, different, but I am perfectly happy playing by myself. Would it be nice to be loved by others? Sure, but learning to survive on my own makes me stronger.
SML: I am glad that you see the world that way. Now say cheese to the camera and let’s enjoy this wonderful day!
P.S. Rainbow Teddy now has an Instagram account at instagram.com/rainbowteddy8 but he has not had the time to post anything yet. Stay tuned.

The USS Peleliu is currently in Hong Kong. I was made aware of this fact via Billy Clarke—a writer / photographer / journalist I recently met on Instagram. I took the 100-400 with me and took a whole bunch of photos. It is currently parked at Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui, and you can get the best view of the ship if you get on the roof where the car park is.
Obviously I saw a ton of photographers there today. Most of them have very wide angle lenses, and for sure I understand why they do, because the USS Peleliu is a large ship. But in usual SML fashion, I am mostly interested in photographing microscope of things of interest to me—and in this case, it’s the gigantic typography on the side of the ship as well as the always spectacular positioning of vehicles hand in the middle of nowhere on the side “facade” of the ship.
The number 5 has a painted drop shadow—which is pretty awesome. Seriously. Crazyisgood!
For those who are curious to see what the marine boys do on the ship, stay tuned—they are coming later in the stream.

Not my favorite look — but I love this model. Wearing oddly shaped garments with super high heels on the runway is no joke. I am always amazed how graceful they are to maintain the poise required for the catwalk.

Thank you for Your Visit, Have a Nice Day is a performance piece by Agata Olek (Facebook / Flickr / Portfolio) created for Art in Odd Places:SIGN, an annual festival exploring the odd, ordinary and ingenious in the spectacle of daily life.
Curated by Erin Donnelly and Radhika Subramaniam
Director of AIOP: Ed Woodham
Artist Statement
"Inspired by a uniformed attendant holding the sign Hold the Handrail in a Taipei metro station, I've created this moving installation/performance piece. In wearable sculptures of multicolored crocheted camouflage, my performers appear in various sites on 14th Street, displaying photographs of signs I've collected from different countries that are in emphatic, ironic or amused dialogue with their location."

After affixing the iPad on the Hover Bar, I thought that it would be an excellent webcam to do video conference with. And apparently I had the same idea more than a year ago—because I already own the app for it: PocketCam by Senstic. It seems that I gave up on it before because doing teleconference while holding a device is no fun, but now that the iPad hover hands free it makes things easier.
In case you have no idea wtf is going on in this photo, I have zoomed in my monitor to show the Skype preferences window. By point the iPad cam to the greatly zoomed in window, I created a gigantic feedback delayed video loop. It is delayed because the video signal path to slow. But it is fun as you can see the windows rotate one by one over time. You see, lag is good for _something_. :)

Tony Oursler
20 Franc
Mixed media
2010

An invisible deadly web virus is spreading so the gang came together to raise awareness.
Papa Smurf: Did you know that up til 1990, homosexuality was considered a mental disorder by the World Health Organization (WHO)?
Little Green Man (LGM): Seriously? Humans are so backwards.
Rainbow Teddy (RT): This is why every year on May 17, we have decided to join up and bring awareness on social media.
Tigger: United we stand. To quote a tweet commonly attributed to (an unconfirmed) Morgan Freeman: “I hate the word homophobia. It’s not a phobia. You are not scared. You are an asshole.”
In Hong Kong, homophobia is still a huge problem. For most of my adulthood I have lived in New York mostly as I wish to distance myself from my family in order to not negatively affect them because of who I am.
I hope that one day I can just be.

Here is another mixed media installation by Chiharu Shiota (塩田千春 Shiota Chiharu b. 1972 Osaka, Japan), the artist I knew nothing about but fell in love with after my brief visit to Art Basel Hong Kong 2013 recently.
For her “State of being” series, a physical object—a boy’s kimono in this case—is suspended in air with black threads. Some have mentioned that they look like charcoal drawings, and they definitely do have that feel to it. Except that it is just a web of threads affixed to a metal frame.
It reminds one of an old precious long-forgotten item found inside the attic, memories which are trapped somehow—unreachable, but there.
Stunning at its simplicity but masterful in its execution. It is suspended between reality and surrealism. Highly recommended.

It is rare for me to remember any artist’s name after seeing their work only once, but El Anatsui is one of those very rare exceptions. I saw his work last at The Armory Show 2010 in New York [1], and I distinctively remember him mainly because of the transmutative properties of the medium which he chooses.
Anatsui’s sculptures look like a sort of abstract expressionist tapestry made out of fabric, but are in fact a knit of thousands of discarded aluminium bottle tops threaded together with copper wires.
Fluidity of form is a significant quality inherent to his sculptures. The artist insists that his hangings be draped rather than hung flat, and allow museums and galleries to do the draping themselves, thus leaving their actual appearance differ from each show adding a unfixed quality into the sculptural practice.
Anatsui was born in Anyako, and trained at the College of Art, University of Science and Technology, in Kumasi, in central Ghana. He began teaching at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1975, and has become affiliated with the Nsukka group.

彩熊 Rainbow Teddy (RT) overheard a conversation recently: “Why does the rainbow flag represents LGBT?” an SML Family member asked.
”Oh, it’s because the rainbow is all-inclusive and it represents people in all different colors,” RT hijacked the conversation while fanning out the Pantone Color guide to show the amazing beauty of color diversity.” But if you want more information about the rainbow flag, let me Google that for you:
According to Wikipedia, the rainbow flag, sometimes LGBT pride flag or gay pride flag, is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements in use since the 1970s. The colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride in LGBT rights marches. It originated in California, but is now used worldwide. [1]”
“可能中文會比較容易明白: 彩虹旗作為同志驕傲標誌是起源於美國加州。顏色反映的LGBT社區的多樣性, 所以自20世紀70年代成為LGBT (Lesbian 女同性戀者, Gay 男同性戀者, Bisexual 雙性戀者, Transgender 變性者)社會運動的象徵。”

During Art Basel Hong Kong this year, Mayoral Galeria D’Art from Barcelona gave a solo show to Joan Miró, arguably one of the most important artists in Spanish history.
Born to the families of a goldsmith and a cabinet-maker, he grew up in the Barri Gòtic neighborhood of Barcelona. Miró initially went to business school as well as art school. His father is unsupportive of his art education, and when he had his first solo show at the Dalmal Gallery, his work was ridiculed and defaced.
But as you can see now, he is now universally recognised as a significant influence on late-20th century art. In 1954 he was given the Venice Biennale print making prize, in 1958 the Guggenheim International Award, and in 1980 he received the Gold Medal of Fine Arts from King Juan Carlos of Spain.
Hard work and perseverance usually pay off if you keep at it. Just do what you love.

# Joan Miro
Joan Miró i Ferrà (Catalan pronunciation: [ʒuˈam miˈɾo]) (April 20, 1893 – December 25, 1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona. A museum dedicated to his work, the Fundació Joan Miró, was established in his native city in 1975.
Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.

As Cosmopolitan writes, it is “Sex in the City marries Facebook.” While SML has his “MenReview” project, it seems that this idea is not really that far off, as clearly there is a market for men reviews.
Available on iOS as well as the Android platform, LuLu allows women to review men anonymously, with things which women apparently do care about: is he ambitious, trustworthy, good in bed?
Sickly awesome. Crazysigood. SML Love.

As an interaction designer, I love art works which uses technology and are interactive. I also love truly crazy ideas. So this piece by japanese collective Chim↑Pom is a by-chance encounter of pure awesomeness.
This work intends to provide an alternative source to energy by converting “libido” to electricity. Chim↑Pom inserted tiny erotic ads in newspaper to solicit calls from “needy” male adults. When they call this number, the machine will convert radio waves into electricity by an optical sensor with a relay. This “invention” is currently patent-pending, apparently.
When this work is shown at Art Basel Hong Kong, a similar ad was placed in a newspaper in Hong Kong. To figure out how this works, I called the number—if you zoom into the photo you will see my number on the iPhone. When it rings, the light bulb lights up through the machine. The calls are real, also — as the director of the gallery told me that quite a few people called multiple times thinking that it is a legit number.
Crazyisgood. SML Love.

In most parts of the world, seeing high-performance sports cars on the road is a rare sighting. In Hong Kong, these exotic birds are everywhere are such a commonplace that no one really pays attention to them.
Pictured is a green Porsche 911 GT3 RS [according to Wikipedia it is also known as 977 GT3 RS (Porsche’s internal designator)] waiting impatiently behind a traffic light for his turn to roar while cranking his engines for all to hear—but as seen in the photo, no one pays much attention to its presence.
Designed as a higher performance version of the Porsche 911 sports car, the GT3 begins its lineage way back in 1973 as the 911 RS. The RS is short for the German RennSport, literally "racing sport" in English. 997 GT3 RS is the road car version of the 911 RS racing series.
I don’t know how to drive but I get my fair share of what is available in the market just walking around in random neighbourhoods in Hong Kong. Getting the newest + greatest + shiniest toys of all is a bizarre consumerism culture in Hong Kong. Observation is often a far better indicator for what may trend in the future than reading analytics reports (which are, by definition, history already).

Never let who you are limit what you can do. I honestly believe that anyone can accomplish anything in life if they have the will to do it.
Pictured are two runners seen at the Ma On Shan Promenade after they have finished their run and are walking home. One of the men is visually impaired. But he is able to run outside with the help of a guide runner. A cotton rope binds their hands together, thus allowing the visually impaired athlete to be able to run out in open air.
I have never seen anything like this before. Hong Kong is awesome. And very accessible. Crazyisgood. SML Love.

Toy Story by SML
With a big glass of Pinot Noir in hand, Bert forgot about the pain of modeling while Ernie got trashed.
Toy Story by Erotocrat (NYC)
It was reported by Burt that the euphoria caused by Ernie is unlike hand-puppet jobs received from other muppets. I even remember my first experience with Ernie, who as a young muppet, emerged from Mr. Hooper’s bodega off of Sesame Street one crispy morning. Ernie glanced at me as though I were a masked Adonis of some sort and told me in no uncertain terms, that he felt like the letter B.
