Autumn Winter
By Peter S. Quinn
Autumn Winter is now
In its beautiful scenery
Brownish red bending brow
Making treasures to see
Silent hours in thrill
Dreams of ocean waves
Floating around here still
In memories and craves
Oh, evil temptress, why do you frustrate me with your sweet buttery icing goodness -- you know we cannot be together for fear of forsaking my bikini...yes, I know there is still snow on the ground, and I do not live anywhere close to a beach...but I cannot give in to the craving...oh drat...maybe....just one.

A birthday gift for my three-year-old niece
Our friends came in from Calgary this weekend and as a thank you gift for lending them our couches and blankets, they brought with them some designer cupcakes from a shop in Calgary. The designer little bakery is called "Crave," and the cupcakes were delectable. Here is my favorite one--a double chocolate version with fluffy blue frosting.
I've always felt that if a branch was hanging low enough to reach, I had to climb it. Didn't seem like I had any right to disagree, like refusing an outstretched hand to help me. This is where I get painfully philosophical, and start thanking the woods as if it's listening. I've got no complex mystical belief system about this, I know the trees just grow and don't notice my presence. But I'm grateful for the escape they accidentally offer, walking the banks of this sleepy old brook, where they continuously reach over blank space below. Shelter when the sun feels nothing like a friend, the days are long and bright and I crave some escape. Scrubby brush, thin trunks and shallow roots, never get much purchase in the rocky skin of Digby Neck. I'm sticking my heart out, thanks to you.
