A very young Brown Pelican appeared to be on a collision heading with my kayak before it pulled up short in pursuit of schools of gulf menhaden on Horsepen Bayou last month. Although there is a major pelican rookery only about 20 miles away on South Deer Island in Galveston's West Bay, I have never seen them come to the bayou to feed before late fall or winter so this early visit was quite a surprise. Canoe Boy (AKA Jerome) has a theory as to why.

Watching the bubbles slide through the water, I found myself mesmerized by the colors zipping by. What a perfect way to dive into a very small world. "Color is the place where our brain and the universe meet.” – Paul Klee

And it feels right this time

On his crash course with the big time

Pay no mind to the distant thunder

New Day fills his head with wonder, boy

Says it feels right this time

Turned it 'round and found the right line

"Good day to be alive, sir

Good day to be alive, " he says

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel

Was just a freight train coming your way

fishing huts in the Venetian lagoon, immersed in the wonderful autumn atmosphere

The lagoon is that coastal area where the sea rests by wedging itself into the land, which shapes itself to its moods by welcoming large stretches of brackish water called valleys. Fishermen have made it a fishing spot since ancient times.

It is nature that has chosen these very particular humid environments as ideal habitats for fish, plant and avifaunal species. The Venetian lagoon is the most famous and celebrated in the world.

I am back. I feel it is time to show myself... So here it is... :)

I am back from my holiday and will be very busy next fortnight so expect a little less photos from me but I am here and sooner or later I will catch up with all of your photos my friends!

After a crash course of focusing, my big friend Marko who knows the basics took this shot!

I hope you all are having some grate time like I did!

Fishing with "tresse"

Starting from the second half of the 20th century, the most practiced fishing activity with fixed nets in the Venice lagoon is fishing with tresse. The tress

It is made up of dense mesh barriers (minimum size of 14 mm from the node

knot) held in place by wooden poles driven into the lagoon bed at a distance

approximately 1.5 m apart. The height of the nets is generally 1.2 - 1.5 m. The catch is caught with cogolli (also called bertovelli) positioned along and at the end of the

network barrier, so as to minimize the possibility of escape of the species being fished.... have you understood the "no return?"

Done for the Avatrait Photo Contest..

I need to give so many thanks to my husband, Wyatt <3, for giving me a super crash course in putting pics together in PS....I love you baby..ty so much..this picture could not have been done without you......<3

Came home from work this evening to find a new, bright green shimmery Monarch chrysalis hanging where the beautiful caterpillar was when I left this morning. This is chrysalis #2, with two more caterpillars still to come.

And, if I'm reading the ring markings at the top of the new chrysalis correctly, this little jewel will be a female when it hatches. (In my Monarch crash course of the last week I learned that you can tell the sex of the butterflies and of the chrysalis..although not the caterpillars...) :)

When I first started Apophysis 7X, all I managed to do was generate some random fractals - the result was pretty hopeless.

I experimented with all kinds of variations for random fractals until I found a set that could easily be tweaked into something fairly presentable.

In the following album you can find this easy method to familiarise yourself with making fractals in Apophysis 7X, starting from a certain type of random fractals.

Tweaking them, helps you understand how fractals work and what the variations do while you have pretty nice results fairly quickly.

I made hundreds and hundreds and then some of those, before I began to understand how this works.

Save all your attempts, even if they look dreadful. Later on, when you get the hang of things, you can use those as basis to turn them into something pretty.

Honeybees 'flap' their wings about 250 (!) times a second . Far too quickly for Olymp to show more of their flight than a rotor movement (see inset). In the main photo Apis has collected lots of pollen and is now delving for nectar in a flower of Augustine's Rhododendron.

Augustine Henry (1857-1930) - for whom William Botting Hemsley (1843-1924) named that flowering shrub - must've been busy as a Bee himself. He studied natural sciences and philosophy winning a Gold Medal and then went on to do a crash course in medicine. He didn't much want to enter 'boring' medical practice in some town in Great Britain or Ireland. Henry was encouraged to enter the British Custom Services. He quickly learned the rudiments of Chinese (Mandarin) and at the age of 24 was posted to Shanghai. Soon after he was sent to Yichang (Incanh) in Hubei, China. Life as a customs official there was boring, and Henry took up botany, first as a collector of plants. He was to become a versatile botanist who became an expert on Chinese plants and sent an enormous collection back to England. Among them this Rhododendron. Departing China (1900), Henry studied forestry in France and was appointed to the first readership in forestry at the university of Cambridge and in 1913 to the first chair in forestry in Dublin, Ireland. Busy Bee, indeed.

An eastbound Conrail train crosses from Allentown to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on one of Allentown Yard’s receiving tracks. A Penn Central SD40 and an Erie Lackawanna U36C lead the consist out of the yard. As college students without a car on this day, a friend and I walked from South Bethlehem about three miles to this location. Shortly after taking this photo, the engineer invited us up to the cab. After learning where we lived, he offered us a ride back across the river. He could not stop, but after giving us a crash course on the now-forbidden practice of dropping off of a moving train, he slowed near the former Lehigh Valley station, and we were a short walk from the dorm.

The flaming end of the Rittern von Königstein tournament last Saturday. A very enjoyable festival we were very happy to see coming back to life after two Corona plagued years. Entertaining show, music, food, drink, nice people to meet... I even got to give an absolute beginner's crash course on how to use a FED 2 :)

Thank you everyone for your visits, faves and comments, they are always appreciated :)

With only a few miles left to the El Segundo mine, Escalante Western's trio of SD40s are roaring right along with their empty train. Despite not only the very brief crash course in pacing a train, but also having a very small window of opportunity where the tracks are close enough to the highway with no obstructions, I think my wife did a pretty decent driving job to make this shot happen!

Friendly people, weird people, you name it Lots of spot light and colourful too. Oh yes, the smell from the spray cans 😂 There was even a free crash course on graffiti which was participated from teenagers to grannies 👵 It was great to see the legacy still lives on, very much alive and passing on to the future generations 👦 👧

20th February 2020

Oooh!!

What is it Flynn?

I'm just SO excited!!

Oh, what are you excited about?

Life! The Universe! Everything!.... And that pebble you're holding. Mostly the pebble, to be honest!

Wait - you know about the Universe?

Duh, of course I do.

But how can you possibly know about that? You're a dog! Erm... no offence meant, Flynn!

Hmph, plenty offence taken! I'm a border collie. We know these things. Mummy-Collie gave all us puppies a crash course on physics. An' space an' time an' sheep, while we were living in The Barn. I had to pass a test on Everything, before she'd let me go off to live with the hoomans. Never mind all that though, throw the pebble!!

But... but... I have questions... What do collies know about the universe and physics?

Well, for one thing, that whole String Theory thing hoomans talk about is all wrong. Things are more woolly than stringy. It should be called Wool Theory. That's why sheeps are so important, an' why collies are important too... cause we shuffle the sheeps around. In space. And time. Some of us do anyway. I got other stuff to keep me busy.

Wait, you were learning about String Theory at eight weeks old?

Oh, no, we'd moved on by then! We learnt about Wool Theory at six weeks.

Um... o-kay? I think I might have more questions?

Ask me later, I'll tell you all about the true importance of the Dog Star! Now, come on: THROW THE PEBBLE!! It's for Science.

Haha, do you ever wonder sort of job your dog would have, if they were a person? If Flynn were human, he'd probably be an expert in some terribly obscure branch of science. Absolutely mad keen on that one, very specific topic. I think he'd be more of a researcher, than a teacher. I suspect Flynn might get slightly annoyed when posed "stupid" (totally reasonable!) questions by students! As to what sort of science Flynn would specialise in... Given how much border collies enjoying watching & controlling movement (everything from sheep, to pebbles), perhaps he'd be a physicist, with complex equations scrawled all over the walls. That, or Flynn would go into biology & become The World Authority on discovering & categorising ridiculously rare species of fungi, found only in very specific sorts of woodland. Flynn enjoys excitement in his life, but he prefers it to be organised excitement!!

First, let me apologize to my Flickr contacts for my lack of participation over the last two months. Things have changed a bit in my life and I'm trying to find the few hours per week to fav and comment on your photo's. I'm hoping to get back to it this weekend........

On a recent trip to Moab, Brad McGinley and I met a nice couple up at Delicate Arch who hung around with us after it got dark. We gave Tyler a crash course in night shooting, but Neven was kind enough to head down to the arch and light paint for us while we hung out on the top of the rim and shot. I think she was down there painting away for well over an hour. I think we got the better of the deal! Thanks Neven!

This is a combination of a number of images. 3 for the foreground and 5 for the sky. I've been experimenting with a new technique to bring out the stars and it worked amazingly well on this shot. In fact, I had to back it off as it pulled out so many stars that the photo didn't look natural. Hopefully, I'll perfect the technique over time and be able to hone the perfect balance out of these.

As always if you see anything which can be improved or if you think it's perfect, please don't hesitate to comment.

Among all the Italian destinations that are enhanced by fog, the Venetian lagoon is certainly the first.

Tiny islands inhabited for centuries, silent canals where the mist mixes with the rustling sound of the water on the walls of the houses. Rare boats ripple the surface and far away fishing nets deceive the horizon...

Many thanks for your views, faves and supportive comments. These are always very much appreciated.

I do hope that some of you today take the time to explore some of this fascinating natural history of the rocks of Tasmania. I must admit the crash course I have taken to prepare these notes is still making my brain ache. Just when you think you have a handle of what is going on, Nature throws a "curve ball".

Preliminaries and then the bombshell. I've chosen this photo last because (as my title suggests) it fits the story at both a macro and micro level. In this rock itself we can see where molten lava has solidified. But the flow of this molten rock is very obvious. It is well worn now, because it is very old. On the broader scale, this rock was once part of a process that saw a complete realignment and reshaping of all the continents.

After all, continents are large rock bases that were sitting on a molten interior of the planet. Forces unimaginable allowed these large continents to break up and drift apart, being reshaped for at least 1.5 billion years. So the form our world map takes today is a temporary one - of course we are talking huge stretches of time. We can't even imagine what one million years is like. Try 4 billion years since the earth first began to be formed from the debris left over from the creation of our solar system. The earth is a dynamic system, always in flux. It's why it amuses me when people talk about a changing climate. Well, hello, the climate has always been changing and has changed far more dramatically in the past than it is now. Far more!

So here's the bombshell. Geologists in Tasmania have discovered that our island was once linked to the North American continent and only later came to be attached to mainland Australia. Tasmania moved with Antarctica (and Antarctica kept moving to the southern polar region - we know this because petrified forests have been discovered in Antarctica as it was once a balmy climate that was habitat for dinosaurs).

Here's a short TV discussion of these findings: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f_Hcyfv5rU

So the geological origins of Tasmania are far more complex than we could ever imagine. No wonder I was confused trying to identify some of these rocks.

Dedicated To Faisal Al Bisher & Jamal Alayoubi

Thank You for Every thing :)

Hello people!

Today is a black & white day at Color my World Daily. That explains my b&w background… But I could not resist to show you my new prop which I found few days ago.

Is there something more awesome than a red space rocket???? If one day I go into space, I want it to be in a red space ship!! I know it isn’t black & white, but a little splash of red cannot hurt … This red rocket is so perfect for my Red Ladies and other people of the group (Mr. Kosmo comes to mind !!!).

Apparently, space travel is very popular among my props.

Everyone wants to go into space and of course, everyone is fighting to be the first! You know what they say… if you are the first one to discover a new territory it belongs to you! As long as you put your flag on it !!! That is very, very important: don’t ever forget the flag!!!! So of course, my 2 Red Ladies have their flags, among other very important items, in their bags. Both of them are ready and they have completed a crash course about space travel (the diplomas are in the bags, so are the badges of “space travel specialist grade #1”!).

Both of them, they want to discover a beautiful and untouched piece of paradise and make some huge money on tourism… Space Airbnb! Why not, I’m sure it will work! And maybe, just maybe they will finally discover love…. It is a well-known fact: falling in love in space is a lot easier than on earth… The laws of attraction are very, very different in space…. Some say, the zero gravity thing makes your heart lighter and it is very easy to fill it in with love…

Who else is dreaming about space travel??? Or just travel someplace warm and beautiful, without snow and with a view on the ocean??? All-inclusive resorts are preferred (as you all know by now: I drink and eat a lot lol) ….

Happy Sliders Sunday and Happy Color My World Daily Black & White to all participants!!!

Thank you so much for all your lovely comments / favs/ general support / happy thoughts / positive vibes!! It is truly appreciated! Have a great day and see you soon!!

Model: Deeya Beerjafan

Location: Mauritius, Poste Lafayette.

Many thanks to Deeya who made my life quite easy as a newbie in model photography! ;-)

My Dear Friends, I've been away for a while, I am still currently traveling in Mauritius & Reunion Islands, where I met an old school friend Phil who got me into model photography, so here is my first model shoot!

Many thanks again to Phil who gave me a crash course on using his California Sun Bounce reflectors.

Lighting the model with reflectors was very challenging, I am still on the learning curve. Thanks to post processing, I was able to correct many mistakes due to my lack of experience!

I wanted to start this series with a 'model + landscape' type of photo, the subsequent ones will be more 'conventional' model photography, where the landscape is not as predominant.

Comics Conventions

By Michael Vance

What, you ask, is a comic book convention?

Even if you didn’t ask, unconventional is understatement when uttered about comic book conventions. They predate comic book shops, and attract a handful to crowds of thousands at hotels or convention centers. They have personalities, and offer a day of quiet conversation or four days of madness.

You’ll have to watch the walls of comics stores (most post convention flyers), read newspapers, or buy a magazine like “The Comic Buyer’s Guide”. It’s the only way to find them. But it’s worth the effort.

You might meet Spock there … or his ears.

Spock and guests like him are frequent attractions. Professional artists, writers, and actors are often accessible for conversation, an autograph, or even a sketch.

You’ll also find thousands of unique things for sell: new and old comics, books, pulps, toys, movies, posters, clothing, original art … and Spock’s ears. Most art rooms showcase dozens of paintings, sketches, and such to gawk at or buy, and films are generally shown all day with an emphasis on adventure, horror, animation and … those ears.

“Filk You” is a button worn as invitation by fans who enjoy “filking” … folk music with new lyrics. The audience usually sings along. There are dances at convention parties. If you don’t dance (and don’t ask me) there are costume shows to watch or model in (wearing, of course, those ears) or board or video game tournaments that last for days.

Audience, writers, artists and actors interact on panels addressing the silliest or most somber questions that a convention committee can draft. You may (finally!) sit and rest.

It’s a great crash-course for anyone interested in entering the world of comic books, and a terrific place to make friends with people and Vulcans who share your interests.

You might even meet me or R. A. Jones … in his Spock ears. If so, say hello. R. A. deserves an earful.

So, just what is a comic book convention?

Ear today. Gone tomorrow.

Going to the Orlando Convention center for a Photoshop crash course. ALLLL day PS heaven!!

I have also been working on another Bookcover, as well as processing a wedding, so I have had little time to shoot something new.;-(

Hoping to get some great ideas from tomorrows adventure and maybe over the weekend I will have something new.

A spectacular trio of merging galaxies in the constellation Boötes takes centre stage in this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. These three galaxies are set on a collision course and will eventually merge into a single larger galaxy, distorting one another’s spiral structure through mutual gravitational interaction in the process. An unrelated foreground galaxy appears to float serenely alongside the collision, and the smudged shapes of much more distant galaxies are visible in the background.

This colliding trio — known to astronomers as SDSSCGB 10189 — is a relatively rare combination of three large star-forming galaxies lying within only 50 000 light-years of one another. While that might sound like a safe distance, for galaxies this makes them extremely close neighbours! Our own galactic neighbours are much further away; Andromeda, the nearest large galaxy to the Milky Way, is more than 2.5 million light-years away from Earth.

This observation was designed to help astronomers understand the origin of the largest, most massive galaxies in the universe. These galactic behemoths are called Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and — as the name suggests — are defined as the brightest galaxies in any given galaxy cluster. Astronomers suspect that BCGs form through the merger of large, gas-rich galaxies like the ones in this image. They turned to Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 and Advanced Camera for Surveys to investigate this galactic trio in painstaking detail, hoping to shed light on the formation of the Universe’s most massive galaxies.

[Image description: Three galaxies stand together just right of centre. They are close enough that they appear to be merging into one. Their shapes are distorted, with strands of gas and dust running between them. Each is emitting a lot of light. Further to the left is an unconnected, dimmer spiral galaxy. The background is dark, with a few smaller, dim and faint galaxies and a couple of stars.]

original photo by Maraculio... my 1st entry sa PK PP Challenge Basic Edition!

How it came about to this:

chose an old photo texture, then I added it to the image... then "blended" (tama kaya term ko?) it to the photo-Multiply.. then I adjusted color balance and brightness/shadows and some other stuff... (gets nyo kaya, to?)

Since I'm such a newbie, i had a friend help me out.. super thanks for the crash course on Photoshop, N.C.!

Taken on my last outing with the camera before my world fell apart.

I was sitting by the bridge to Stone Harbor watching the juvenile Black Skimmers hunting along the shoreline as the sun set across the bay.

Hi everyone. It's been awhile.

I just wanted to touch base and let everyone know I'm hanging in here.

As I write this, it doesn't seem possible to me that almost 5 months have slipped by already.

My days have been busy.

So much paperwork! It's confusing at times and very overwhelming.

Larry handled EVERYTHING!

Now I am getting a crash course in all things financial and how to handle our assets

Every day is something new!

I do have good friends and advisors though. For that I am grateful!

Having my animals has been a God send. For the 1st several weeks they were the only reason I was rolling out of bed. They make me feel like I have a purpose.

And of course my granddaughter has been my lifeline. Having the kids around is truly the best medicine

I'll get there folks, little by little.

I'm not ready to jump back into Flickr full time quite yet though

But I miss you all and just wanted to send you all a big HUG! XOXO

The We're Here! gang is getting existential today.

The central claim of existentialism is that existence precedes essence. That means our essence – our purpose in life – is neither given to us nor dictated to us. We make our own choices and find our own purpose.

There's a fantastic eight-minute crash course in existentialism in this video.

A very pained and struggled crash course in RAW because I forgot I was messing around with the settings when I went picture taking. I'll be honest, I was a little stunned with how much more was in the pictures and how much more you can do with them. I may never go back to jpeg. My hiking pictures will always be on the fly, not always great, but sometimes yes the light was spot on, because I'm making memories whether the light cooperates or not. But this, this may make pictures a bit easier to salvage. Happy accident

This is my first time shooting medium format, developing any type of film myself and scanning. crash course. I am surprised how well these turned out. great feeling not needing to depend on a lab.

Here's a of the Bollywood dance at the Capitol that I was telling you about. It doesn't look like they got the 3 thousand they were looking for. Probably because it was so hot. Anyway, it was fun to watch. Hope you enjoy it as well. I had to do a crash course on how to edit videos in Photoshop..:)

Hello guys, I'm just finding tune with my HDR skills. Still very unrealistic, I wanna go for the natural HDR appeal but I guess the overtly details enhancer is so tempting. This was taken as test shots when I first got my S5 IS, hence the annoying handshakes hehe. I think architecture ain't my niche but heck, I'll give it a shot.

PS: I need a crash course on strobing

I went to an event at the nearby Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. A crash test dummy was sitting in a relaxed mood on a sofa next to a test-crashed car. He can now chill after hard work.

I processed a balanced, a paintery, and a photographic HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.
