1995 Cannondale Track, Black Campagnolo Shamal wheelset, Black Campagnolo Record crankset, Wound Up fork
The theme for this week is Wabi-sabi. A Japanese term for beauty in imperfection and impermanence, especially in the natural world (as I understand it).
This is the remains of a bicycle that was once abandoned in the woods. The tree grew around it, enveloping the mechanism. Unfortunately, the rest of the bike recently vanished, leaving only the crankset.

I don't build a lot of bikes with disc brakes, let alone hydraulic disc brakes. This was a fun project. Fillet brazed frameset with a mix of Columbus/True Temper/Reynolds, 2x11 Ultegra drivetrain, Praxis Works crankset and T47 bottom bracket, ENVE carbon rims on White Industries/Shutter Precision hubs, Schmidt lighting, custom racks powdercoated black, Zipp bar/stem/post, Integrated Lezyne pump, Ti hardware throughout

Well I decided to do a proper photo of my bike recently since I've really just taken a few Instagram shots of it so far figured I might as well set something up and do a proper photo of it. I did this shot in the garage in my apartment, got a few looks and had a couple people question me about what I was doing taking a photo of a bike while I was down there. Not going to lie I didn't prepare properly for this mainly because I forgot to bring my gels for my lights and I forgot an umbrella bracket for one of my stands which means I didn't get to use 3 lights for this. Now I could have gone back upstairs to grab it but I didn't want to leave all my stuff there and I really didn't want to go through the trouble of packing up and moving everything back upstairs and back down again because it was a little much to handle for one person what with my camera bag, light stand bag, the bike, the bike stand. You can see a shot of the set up in the comments or on my Instagram.
So now for some random bike talk. This is of course 2015 Specialzed Roubaix SL4 Comp, got this at the beginning of the year just cause. Really didn't need to upgrade my old 2011 Allez but I wanted to because I'm silly and I like my bikes. I also upgraded it as well. Changed to stock wheels for the Fulcrum Racing Quattro, since they were a little lighter, deeper rim section and really because they look nicer. I also snagged a Dura Ace 9000 crankset for dirt cheap as well. On top of that I also got a Stages Dura Ace 7900 power meter for cheap as well. Doesn't 100% match but a power meter for $300 is an awesome deal and can't complain about that. I also swapped out the saddle for my old Romin Pro. Lastly I changed the handlebars for a set of Zipp SL-70 Aero handlebars just cause I think they look awesome. So a fair chunk of change thrown into it. It was a toss up between this or the Venge at the time but honestly for the riding I do comfort is everything and I ended settling for the Roubaix (plus the Roubaix with Ultegra components was still a little cheaper then the Venge with 105 on it). I do still want an aero road bike though, who knows might be my next upgrade once I've run this guy to the ground. Another note, I didn't get the disc version of this bike for 2 reasons, at the moment I didn't have the extra money for it but more importantly it was only the SL4 Comp that came in white and I wanted a bike in white!
Strobist Info
1x Nikon SB-800 with a 2x3" softbox boomed overhead firing at 1/8th power, I also held my 1x2m diffuser overhead to diffuse this as well (that shot was used as the base and the rest were composited in)
1x Nikon SB-800 camera right with a 2x3" softbox camera right firing at 1/32 power
A large 1x2m diffuser that I used as a reflector camera left
Maybe. It took quite a while to find a Stronglight 49D crankset for the Bertin for a price I was willing to pay... maybe a Sologne handlebar bag?
Ordered new by my father and received by him in 1938.
Original Equipment :
Frame - Reynolds 531
Fork - Reynolds HM
Headset and Bottom Bracket - Stronglight
Derailleur - Super Champion "Tour de France" four speed
Crankset - Duprat Perforee cottered hollow steel
Brakes - Sport Bowden Touriste
Bar and Stem - Caminargent
Brake Levers - Le Grimpeur
Saddle - Brooks B17 Champion Standard
Seatpost - Unkown alloy with integral clamp
Fenders - Unknown marque but original to the bike from 1938 or shortly after.
Wheels - Rebuilt by Scott Ebersole using original Urago branded hubs, NOS galvinized spokes (which Scott had to cut to length and rethread!) and vintage 700c alloy rims.
Pedals, pump, and chainring are vintage replacements for missing originals. Paint, color mixed and applied with a brush by me in the manner of my father who did this repeatedly over the years.
"Four-speed TA chainwheel set is used with specially made front derailleur by Ernest Csuka."
From an article by Fred Delong on the Salon des Cycle in Paris from the December 1973 BICYCLING! magazine.
Ernest Csuka was in charge of the Alex Singer business after Alex Singer.
Fred Delong was an author (The Complete Book of Bicycling) and technical writer on bicycling. I remember riding with him (and my father) at the GEAR (Great Eastern Rally) sometime in the 70's when he had his hand in cast (like a true avid cyclist!).
