On November 25, 2011 the Advanced Coronary Treatment (ACT) Foundation is launching the ACT High School CPR and Defibrillator Training Program for seven high schools in Guelph and Wellington and Dufferin Counties. The program is being launched in partnership with local community partners, provincial partners, including the Government of Ontario, The Ontario Trillium Foundation and Hydro One, and national partners AstraZeneca Canada, Pfizer Canada, and Sanofi.

This program will see more than 1,700 Grade 9 students from seven high schools in the Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic District School Board empowered to save lives every year. Twenty-five (25) physical education teachers have been trained as CPR and defibrillator instructors for their students. Two hundred and ten (210) mannequins and 28 defibrillator training units will be donated to schools.

Funding for the program in Guelph and Wellington and Dufferin Counties comes from community partners, including Amaranth Lions Club, Fergus-Elora Rotary Foundation, Orangeville Lions Club, Rotary Club of Guelph South, Rotary Club of Shelburne, and Shelburne Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs.

We even got to participate in infant CPR training! Thanks, Dick, for a thorough, hands-on training session!

No mouth to mouth. In October of 2010, The American Heart Association has brought into effect “hands only” CPR. What this means is that if an adult suddenly collapse, more likely it is due to a sudden CARDIAC arrest or other heart conditions that makes the heart suddenly stop. In this case,” hands only” was created to help bystanders help give.

To help an adult that suddenly collapse, there are two simple steps that should be followed:

1.Call 911

2.Place one hand on top the other at the center of the chest, pushing 2 to 2 ½ inches between the chest.

An estimate of 310,000 American dies of sudden CARDIAC arrest each year. Unfortunately, only 6% of victims survive outside the hospital. Uninterrupted chest compressions at a rate of 100 a minute, is able to keep oxygen flowing to the brain, until professional help arrives or an Automated External Defibrillator arrives to restore a normal heart rhythm.

This action should only be taken for adults who suddenly collapse, stop breathing and are unresponsive. If an adult is overdose on alcohol or drugs, or is a drowned victim, RESCUE breaths are needed to restore oxygen to the brain.

This article is by American Heart Saver www.americanheartsaver.com

We got a lot of practice doing compressions on the dummies.

CPR consists of 2 stages: chest compressions (forceful pressing on the chest to stimulate the heart) and artificial respiration (mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing).

Electric stimulation to the chest (called an automated external defibrillator or AED, which a device that help start the heart) and special medicines are sometimes used to resuscitate a person whose heart has stopped beating. This is usually done for 15 to 30 minutes. A tube may also be put through the mouth or nose into the lung. This tube is then connected to a breathing machine and helps the person breathe.

I had my CPR/First Aid training today. It was nuts, but very informative.

I made Todd let me practice on him when I got home. He wouldn't let me blow in his mouth, so it wasn't very effective. And the plastic dummies weren't laughing with their tongue lulling out of their mouths as I SAVED THEIR FREAKING LIVES.

Take note, Todd.
