The rei runs from the meeting of the Groenerei and the Coupure to the Spiegelrei.

The street of the same name is located on the eastern bank and runs from Minneboplein and Leffingestraat to Carmersbrug and Carmersstraat. The Verversdijk is located on the western bank. The Sint-Annarei is spanned by the Molenbrug, the Sint-Annabrug and the Strobrug.

The name "Sint-Annarei" refers to the district and parish of Sint-Anna adjacent to the east. Originally the street west of the rei (now Verversdijk) was called the Schottendijk, because of the Scottish merchants established there.

There is little clarity about the artificiality of the Sint-Annarei. It may be the canalization of the lower reaches of the Vuldersreitje, a watercourse that came from Assebroek. From 1127 the Sint-Annarei was part of the first city walls of Bruges.

The Oude Molenpoort was located near the Molenbrug. Between 1623 and 1855 the Sint-Annarei was part of the canal between Ostend, Bruges and Ghent. The Ringvaart then took over this role. In 1750, all bridges over the Sint-Annarei were replaced by wooden (and later iron) swing bridges to allow passage for larger ships. In the 1970s the bridges were again replaced by the current stone bridges.

The former warehouse number 4 still bears witness to the medieval trading activities. The street also had two important breweries: brewery Den Hert, in house number 17, and brewery Den Arend, later brewery Aigle Belgica, in buildings numbers 23-27.

The Rococo house at number 22 of Sint-Annarei was inhabited in the nineteenth/twentieth century by doctor and art collector Désiré De Meyer, son of the surgeon and art collector Isaac De Meyer, and after him by the war pilot and brewer André De Meulemeester.

This house and the adjacent Blekersstraat were the setting for two well-known films: L'Empreinte de Dieu, after the book of the same name (Prix Goncourt 1936) by Maxence Van der Meersch, and The Nun's Story, a film by Fred Zinnemann with Audrey Hepburn.

Happy New Year, dear MM participants and Flickr friends :)

Flickr seems to be back to normal again :)

When I read that the first theme of 2022 is "Cotton", I first thought of denim, because I love denim. But I was also curious what cotton fibres are used for aside from the obvious – fabric or cotton wool. So I did some research, and to my great surprise I've learned that Euro notes (and banknotes in most other countries) are made of cotton. I'd assumed that the paper used for banknotes would be a special one, but I'd have never guessed that the main part is cotton. Modern Euro notes are made of pure cotton paper; a silver band and special fibres that glow under UV and infrared light are incorporated. The integrated watermark is made by varying the thickness of the paper.

I've photographed the backside of a 50 Euro note. It's the small part, showing Europa, that repeats the watermark, where on the front side there's the silver band. Lightsources were two LED soft lights placed to the left and right (with a hint of backlight) of the banknote, and a handheld flashlight from the front to make the silvery fibres glow. It's a single high-res shot, processed in DXO PhotoLab 5 only. I'm not quite happy with the blurry left edge, and I have a focus stacked image (taken today) that is sharp from edge to edge, but in the end the more colourful version (which I couldn't repeat today, I just didn't get the light right) won, because it was... more colourful – and Europa also looks nicer here, although not any happier than in the edge-to-edge sharp shot. Which tempts me to sing to her: "Life is a Cabaret, old chum, come to the Cabaret!", but I don't sing in public, and the mark that Liza Minelli has set is, of course, unreachable for me ;)

HMM, Everyone, stay safe and take care!

Dijkdoorgang in slaperdijk

A plant belonging to the daisy family that grows in meadows and along roadsides with strongly divided leaves and white to pink flowers that grow in umbels.

Common Names: gordaldo, nosebleed plant, old man's pepper, devil's nettle, sanguinary, milfoil, soldier's woundwort, thousand-leaf, and thousand-seal, bloodwort., carpenter's weed, aka Milfoil, Plumajillo, Sneezeweed, fernweed, Achillea, Achillea lanulosa Nutt.

Overflowing on the Canal Coupure, the installation of the Spanish architecture office selgascano instantly catches the eye. The organic structure with transparent pink, orange and yellow walls projects colorful reflections on the water and offers an ideal place for a break. Although this canal is one of the waterways connecting the Ringvaart to the city center, the locks are mostly closed. This floating lodge is the ideal place for adults and children who want to refresh their feet, or even take a dip.

Autumn in Bruges is wonderful. Here you can see one of the many bridges over the numerous canals in Bruges. This canal is called "Copure". Enjoy!

Seen and shot at the Coupure canal in Bruges, Belgium. Enjoy!

Markt and Burg Quarter, the central district of Bruges, Flanders, Belgium.

Bruges in medieval times was known as a commercial metropolis in the heart of Europe. The city reflects a considerable exchange of influences on the development of art and architecture, particularly in brick Gothic, which is characteristic of northern Europe and the Baltic. This architecture strongly determines the character of the historic centre of the city.

The 11th century city walls marked the boundaries of the medieval city. Although the walls themselves are lost today, they remain clearly visible, emphasized by the four surviving gates, the ramparts and one of the defence water towers. The medieval street pattern, with main roads leading towards the important public squares, has mostly been preserved, as well as the network of canals which, once used for mercantile traffic, played an important role in the development of the city.

In the 15th century, Bruges was the cradle of the Flemish Primitives and a centre of patronage and painting development for artists such as Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. Many of their works were exported and influenced painting styles all over Europe. Exceptionally important collections have remained in the city until today.

Even after its economic and artistic peak at the end of the Middle Ages, building and urban development continued, although Bruges mostly missed the 19th-century industrial revolution. In the 18th and 19th centuries, many medieval parcels were joined to larger entities and new quarters were also developed. The most striking examples of large scale post-medieval interventions in the historic centre are the urbanization around Coupure (1751-1755), the Zand and the first railway station (1838), the Theatre quarter (1867), the Koningin Elisabethlaan and Gulden Vlieslaan (1897) and the creation of the Guido Gezelle-neighbourhood (1920-1930).

I eat everything by erasing bad/evil and good news in my memory! But I don't always succeed very well, then fragments remain, mostly it's the bad news that I can't completely erase away, unfortunately. With the good news, I'm almost 100% successful!

Have a good day, my dear friends. Thank you for your visit and comments.

Buon giorno, cari amici.

Photo taken a few seconds before the castle lighting was switched off ... One shot, lucky!

The glacier originates around 3,000 meters in a glacial circus, dominated and fed with snow by high peaks delimiting the border with Switzerland and Italy (Mount Dolent,3800 meters, Triolet needle, 3,730 meters). The refuge of Argentière is implanted in the heart of this circus, with more than

2700 meters. Further downstream, the glacier is dominated by three peaks of more than 4,000 meters: Les Droites (4,000 meters), Grande Rocheuse (4,102 meters) and l'aiguille Verte (4,122 meters) from which suspended seracs feed. regularly the glacier in avalanches.

About 100 years ago, the glacier reached the temple of Argentière (1,250 meters); in recent years, the terminal tongue of the glacier, which still extends to about 1600 meters, has separated from the rest of the glacier to the altitude of 1900 meters. The separation is marked by a rock of more than 200 m2: the terminal tongue is therefore no longer fed directly by the main glacier, but only by falls of seracs, which jeopardizes its durability. However, such a "cut" had already occurred in the early twentieth century, but had naturally subsided over the years. Despite global warming, there is currently no evidence to suggest that the terminal tongue of the glacier will disappear in the near future.
