My guess would be that this is a portrait of a newlywed couple.

A couple of Caterpillar products head north on a Canadian National freight train in Mattoon, Illinois.
I was just going for a quick walk to the bodega but was glad I brought my camera with me. This cute couple was standing in the driveway across the street from my house and I said "smile" and snapped their picture as I walked by. On the walk back home I passed the boyfriend on the street so l got his email addy to send him the photo. The kid's name is John and apparently his girlfriend lives a few blocks away but he isn't allowed to walk her all the way home. Aaaaaw!
Normally Frankie (on the left) does not like getting photos taken. I managed to snap this one of him and Alison (my mother in law) when he was not looking. Both of them really like the shot and so do I! I wish I had been able to capture them straight on but they were looking into Gemma's camera when I was taking this.
Normally I don't like the HDR effect. here it makes the scene more "gritty". I think it works.

A pair of network pipefish, Corythoichthys flavofasciatus, in the shallow part of the reef in Moalboal. These fish are monogamous, and often travel in pairs.

Pleneau Island, Antarctica. One of the most delightful sights in all of Antarctica is the porpoising of penguins. Adult penguins have enough power in their feet and flippers to essentially launch themselves out of the water like a missile.
They do this to hop onto icebergs, jump onto land from the sea if there is no gradual beach, and they also simply porpoise like this in the water, as they swim around for food. Porpoising is a very essential survival skill for an adult penguin, to escape its two most dangerous predators, leopard seals and orcas. Evolution has now programmed porpoising into the penguin's DNA.
We didn't get to see any porpoising onto land 2-3 feet above the water, but we saw a fair amount of porpoising in the water, like in the shot above.

This is my ninth year covering this fun festival filled with color and pageantry and beautiful people. Each year some of the regulars return and sometimes fresh new faces appear to join the renaissance family. Some are vendors or employees, and some customers dress up to fit in with the renaissance festival fun and its 16th century way of life. One big happy family of a few thousand escaping the dull-drums of their daily life for a few hours. This year's crop of new faces was lovely. Hope you enjoy the images. I try to capture their joy. Always fun, festive and very colorful. Thanks very much for looking.
