the San Francisco Bay gets some crazy tidal flows moving in and out, which can create strong currents for us sailors -- and countercurrents form too, so that when the tide is ebbing (moving out toward the ocean) in the middle of the bay, it's flooding (moving in toward land) weakly along the margins -- hence we end up hugging VERY close to shore, where the water's deep enough, to catch the more favorable current. here Golden Moon is skimming past the breakwater at Pier 39 -- we had to look out for fishing poles sticking over the side or we'd have hit them...
The Channel Islands Slender Salamander (Batrachoseps pacificus) only exists on the islands of Santa Cruz, San Miguel, Santa Rosa, and Anacapa off the coast of Southern California. During the last glacial maximum, these four islands were connected and known by the singular name of Santarosae (Santa Rosae). During this time period this island was only about 5 miles from mainland California. The most likely explanation for initial colonization was rafting across this narrow straight by the closely related, and currently recognized species, B. major, via the Southern California Countercurrent.

Bethlehem Works is a 120-acre (0.49 km2) development site in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, based on land formerly owned by Bethlehem Steel. The company discontinued its steelmaking activities at the main Bethlehem plant in 1995 after about 140 years of metal production. With the closing of its local operations, Bethlehem Steel decided to help redevelop the South Side of Bethlehem, and hired outside consultants to develop concept plans on the reuse of the property. The plan was to rename the site "Bethlehem Works" and to use the land for cultural, recreational, educational, entertainment and retail development - including the Smithsonian Institution - an educational and research institution.
A blast furnace is a type of metallurgicalfurnace used for smelting to produce industrial metals, generally pig iron, but also others such as lead or copper. Blast refers to the combustion air being "forced" or supplied above atmospheric pressure.
In a blast furnace, fuel (coke), ores, and flux(limestone) are continuously supplied through the top of the furnace, while a hot blast of air(sometimes with oxygen enrichment) is blown into the lower section of the furnace through a series of pipes called tuyeres, so that the chemical reactions take place throughout the furnace as the material falls downward. The end products are usually molten metal and slagphases tapped from the bottom, and waste gases (flue gas) exiting from the top of the furnace. The downward flow of the ore along with the flux in contact with an upflow of hot, carbon monoxide-rich combustion gases is a countercurrent exchange and chemical reaction process.
A sweetener is a food additive that provides a sweet taste like that of sugar while containing significantly less food energy. Some sugar substitutes are produced by nature, and others produced synthetically. Those that are not produced by nature are, in general, called artificial sweeteners.
Ceramic membrane technology is finding application in the sweetener industry for clarifying, concentrating, and purifying these important products. They are also ideal for treatment of waste streams from sweetener processes, either for recovery and reuse or treatment prior to waste disposal.
Removal of haze and color from sugar syrup, the concentration of sugar water, can both be accomplished via ceramic membrane filtration processes.
GLUCOSE SYRUP
Glucose syrup, also known as confectioners glucose, is a syrup made from the hydrolysis of starch.
In the food industry, glucose can be produced by iso-enzyme treatment of fructose, especially fructose syrup containing fructose 42% which has similar sweetness to sucrose and become an important product of the current sugar industry.
Glucose is produced by enzymatic hydrolysis of starch milk under certain conditions In the preparation of glucose, there will be a part of protein, fat, fiber, pigment, salt, and other impurities, directly affect the quality of glucose. The application of integrated membrane separation technology containing ceramic membrane & organic membrane filtration has become a new energy-saving cleaner production technology.
Advantages :
Filtrate clear;
excellent transparency,light transmittance > 97%;
reduce the amount of filter aid;
save production costs;
Cane & Beet sugar
Membrane technology can be used in the production of sugar cane juice drinks, original brown sugar; "Membrane - resin process package" can be used for production of refined sugar, high-quality sugar, primary sugar, raw sugar and edible syrup which replaces the traditional one-step, two-step method in the process of liming, sedimentation, plate-frame.
"Membrane resin process package" has unique advantages of clarified sugar cane juice, without muddy, without adding chemical reagents, effective interception of microorganisms, reduce energy consumption, short process, small footprint, achieving CIP cleaning, good regeneration performance, long service life.
Continuous ion exchange technology is a completely innovative separation technology, which is based on the traditionally fixed bed resin adsorption and ion exchange technology, combined with the continuous countercurrent system developed. Through continuous ion exchange, can make separation column in a process cycle to complete the adsorption, washing, regeneration, eluting.
The advantages of continuous ion exchange technology
â‘ compact structure, less piping, small footprint
â‘¡ high resin utilization, can reduce the amount of 50% -70%
â‘¢ high product yield, concentration and purity, and stable
â‘£ washing and chemical reagents consumption less, save 50% -70%
⑤ little waste emissions, greener
Membrane - resin process package" advantages
â‘ can effectively filter clarified cane juice, the product is not muddy.
â‘¡ without adding chemical reagents, reduce solid waste emissions.
â‘¢ high production efficiency, reduce labor costs, improve product quality, improve sugar yield.
â‘£ high precision membrane filtration, which can effectively intercept microorganisms.
⑤ reduce follow-up evaporation energy consumption by 50% and production costs.
â‘¥ short process, compact, small footprint, reduce capital costs.
⑦ membrane and resin can achieve CIP cleaning, good regeneration performance, long service life.

Davis Strait, Canada
The strait was first explored by John DAVIS, leader of three voyages 1585-87 organized by merchants of London, England.
www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/davis-strait
Davis Strait, situated between BAFFIN ISLAND and Greenland, is the entrance to BAFFIN BAY from the North Atlantic. It is a large stretch of water over 950 km across at its greatest width and never less than 300 km wide. At the narrowest point, its submarine topography consists of an undersea ridge, a continuation of the mid-Labrador ridge, extending from the coast of Baffin Island to Greenland. The shallowest waters in the strait are found along this sill, from 350 to 550 m deep, before plunging down to abyssal basins on either side.
Some of the greatest depths in the eastern Arctic are reached here (3660 m) in the southern end of the strait. The surface waters are strongly affected by counterclockwise-flowing currents.
Along the west side, an outflow of cold water from the Arctic Basin moves south, at flow velocities of 8-20 km/day, to feed the Labrador current. On the east side the west Greenland countercurrent brings warmer water north. Ice conditions reflect this flow regime, with heavy ice movement and icebergs along the western shore, contrasting sharply with more open water along the Greenland side.

If at every our mistake a leaf fell from the branch, so that we could see a sign and keep it ever in mind, I'm not sure we would succeed to be better people. Even then we would find an excuse to do as we please. Ours is an age in which everyone is always right, and it is not allowed to tell someone that what he does is not right.
