Phulia is a small village some 200 km from Kolkata, West Bengal. It is well known for handwoven cotton sarees. Here almost every home is involved in the making of soft, bright coloured cotton sarees. The sarees ae woven on traditional looms.
While the artisans of Phulia get pittance for their labor, ( as low as 2-3 USD per saree they weave) much of the fruits of their labor is enjoyed by middlemen and traders, they live in near poverty.
The artisan behind the loom herself wears tatters, she sits and the loom and creates dreams for other women to wear.
